Has better performance compared to that of on-premises solutions
Pros and Cons
  • "Compared to that of on-premises solutions, the performance of Amazon Virtual Private Cloud is much better."
  • "Billing and technical support should be better. There is a steep learning curve as well."

What is most valuable?

Compared to that of on-premises solutions, the performance of Amazon Virtual Private Cloud is much better.

What needs improvement?

Billing and technical support should be better.

There is a steep learning curve as well.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for about three years. We are migrating all of our critical production applications, management information systems, and legacy on-premises applications to this solution. We have 80,000 to 90,000 users at any point in time.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Amazon Virtual Private Cloud has been stable after we resolved some of the issues during deployment.

How are customer service and support?

Amazon's technical support has not been very helpful. I was left to figure things out on my own. Therefore, I would rate technical support at four on a scale from one to ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

I had to figure out the initial setup myself. The documentation is available, but technical support was not helpful. There was a lot of trial and error.

I have handled the maintenance of the solution myself. However, for proper maintenance, backups, backup tools, and CDNs, I would prefer a service that's not native AWS.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Amazon is not very transparent with pricing. It's quite complicated to see where you're spending and how you can track it. I was spending $30,000 a year and $3600 monthly on top of that initial payment. However, I have been able to bring the cost down for this year.

What other advice do I have?

This is not a solution for large production environments that are implementing it for the first time. It is not very user-friendly, and there is a lot of documentation that you have to take the time to go through.

However, having the features hosted on AWS is so much better than having them on-premises. Therefore, compared to on-premises solutions but not Azure or GCP I would rate Amazon Virtual Private Cloud at nine out of ten.

Very good stability with an easy process for provisioning and building networks
Pros and Cons
  • "It is very easy to provision a VPC and build your network."
  • "The solution could have tighter security for traffic."

What is our primary use case?

Our company uses the solution to provide virtual private clouds for customers. It is the heart of AWS because it is the networking part of cloud services that includes a private subnet, public subnet, and private gateway. The solution represents everything from the network perspective.

Within the solution, you create the network environment that includes provisions, services, the DB, the EKS, and zones. You set inbound and outbound traffic services. You enable security features and firewalls that are used by the solution.

What is most valuable?

It is very easy to provision VPCs and build networks.

What needs improvement?

The solution could have tighter security for traffic.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is very good so is rated a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is good so is rated a ten out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is highly supportive so is rated a nine out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The setup is a little bit difficult. After creating the VPC, you have to create subnets based on your requirements for private or public. Then you have to create everything else including the NAT gateway. The final step is to configure both gateways for private and public subnets. The overall creation process takes about 40 minutes.

The entire concept is networking. You have to figure out what things are important and create bridges.

For example, one person with Vodafone services in the UK places a call to another person in India. The country and regional VPCs are in place and it takes permissions to cross them. The call's TCP response goes to the UK servers and the call is dialed using the VPC in the UK. It then hits the VPC in India where it is verified, pushed to the mobile network servers, and is rings through.

Because the setup has complex steps, it is rated a four out of ten.

What about the implementation team?

We implement the solution for customers.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution's pricing is on the higher side so is rated a five out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

The solution is a very, very good product and the heart of everything. I rate the solution a ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

It's flexible and light
Pros and Cons
  • "With an AWS virtual private cloud, you're in charge of what you use. It's pay-as-you-go."
  • "You should be able to toggle off some cloud services when you don't need them and switch them on when necessary."

What is our primary use case?

We use Amazon VPC to host our EC2 instances.

What is most valuable?

With an AWS virtual private cloud, you're in charge of what you use. It's pay-as-you-go.

What needs improvement?

You should be able to toggle off some cloud services when you don't need them and switch them on when necessary.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using Amazon VPC for about two or three years.

How was the initial setup?

I rate Amazon VPC nine out of 10 for ease of setup. The basic setup is easy, but you can do some advanced configurations. It's straightforward overall. The standard deployment takes about one minute. However, the time needed to complete the rest of the configuration depends on your infrastructure and third-party applications. Four or five DevOps engineers work with the solution.

What was our ROI?

You will see a return if you're using it correctly. For example, some people might use an improper family class for their EC2 instances.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is based on how long you want your VPCs to run. It also depends on the class and family of the VPCs and the resources running underneath.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I'm not sure why the company adopted AWS. It's one of the most popular cloud platforms. Also, they have already deployed lots of resources on AWS, so it makes sense to continue with it.

What other advice do I have?

I rate AWS Virtual Private Cloud eight out of 10. I recommend it. We save money by not running an on-prem server, so it's definitely worth it. It's flexible and light, yeah.

Offers a user-friendly setup process, excellent scalability, and seamless integration with other AWS services
Pros and Cons
  • "The main feature I like about Amazon VPC is its security capabilities, including security groups and subnets."
  • "One concern is the cost, which can be relatively high compared to other cloud providers like Azure and Google Cloud."

What is our primary use case?

We use Amazon VPC primarily for our organization's security needs. It helps us maintain isolation and control over our cloud services, similar to our Microsoft cloud service. We use it to communicate with our analytics securely and easily.

What is most valuable?

The main feature I like about Amazon VPC is its security capabilities, including security groups and subnets. It is easy to implement and manage our systems within specific subnets. Additionally, using Terraform for management tasks simplifies the process, and VPC's provision of basic details makes managing the infrastructure straightforward.

What needs improvement?

In terms of VPC itself, I haven't encountered any major areas for improvement. However, one concern is the cost, which can be relatively high compared to other cloud providers like Azure and Google Cloud. This can sometimes lead to considerations of switching to a different provider for cost optimization.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Amazon Virtual Private Cloud for over three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability of the solution as a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

VPC's scalability is excellent because there are no limitations on deploying VPCs. I would rate the scalability as a ten out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

I haven't encountered any issues with Amazon's technical support team. I would rate them as a nine out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

Setting up a network in Amazon VPC is straightforward and beginner-friendly. Deployment took about ten minutes. The user interface is easy to navigate, and Amazon provides comprehensive guidelines and resources to help users understand the setup process. Additionally, updates and new features are regularly provided.

What other advice do I have?

We use Amazon VPC to scale our resources efficiently. We employ horizontal auto-scaling with auto-scaling groups to automatically adjust capacity based on fluctuations in traffic. By setting scaling policies and planning ahead, we ensure seamless resource allocation as traffic increases or decreases. While we primarily use horizontal scaling, we also consider vertical scaling when necessary.

Integrating VPC with other AWS services is seamless and essential for most AWS deployments. Whenever we create resources in Amazon, such as EC2 instances or Auto Scaling Groups, we rely on VPC to provide the necessary networking configuration, like IP address ranges and subnets. This integration simplifies the setup process and is easy to understand and manage.

I would recommend Amazon VPC, but it is essential to consider the cost compared to other cloud services like Azure and Google Cloud. For those using VPC for the first time, understand basic networking concepts like IP addressing and subnetting, prioritize security measures, and plan your VPC deployment based on your specific requirements.

Overall, I would rate Amazon VPC as a ten out of ten.

Used for our private network and creating subnets
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution's subnetting feature is good and has impacted our network design."
  • "When we create instances without public IP, the paid services provided by the solution, NAT gateway, are costly."

What is our primary use case?

Amazon Virtual Private Cloud is the heart of the application, and we use it for our private network.

What is most valuable?

The solution's subnetting feature is good and has impacted our network design. We can create multiple machines with subnetting services. We can divide the CIDR with the help of subnets. It provides security, and we can create subnets in public and private.

What needs improvement?

When we create instances without public IP, the paid services provided by the solution, NAT gateway, are costly.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Amazon Virtual Private Cloud for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution a nine out of ten for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Around 50 users are using the solution in our organization.

I rate the solution’s scalability a nine out of ten.

How was the initial setup?

The solution’s initial setup is easy.

What about the implementation team?

It takes two or three hours to deploy Amazon Virtual Private Cloud.

What other advice do I have?

In our environment, we have public and private infrastructure. The public front-end applications are directly accessible to the client. In a private network, we use database machines, like RDS machines.

It's easy to set up security groups in the new versions of Amazon Virtual Private Cloud. AWS also provides options to create subnets with the solution. I would recommend the solution to other users. A client using AWS needs to create an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud.

Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

A VPC solution to create a virtual private network with pay-as-you-go pricing

What is our primary use case?

We use VPC to create a virtual private network. They provide the IP address of each system on each mission. We can configure public and private subnets and modify the configuration of IP addresses for other VPN tunnels. We can also manage network subnets and other related resources with VPC.

What is most valuable?

We pay for AWS services as we go. Whatever we need, we can get it directly from Amazon without having to release it. This is sufficient for our needs.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Amazon Virtual Private Cloud for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution’s scalability is good.

We have 15+ accounts set up for VPC. We are managing the entire VPC setup.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not too much difficult. If you know very well about the network configuration setup, we can directly configure it.

VPC is a chargeable service. If you configure it incorrectly, you may be charged for unnecessary resources. Therefore, it is essential to understand the different VPC configurations before making any changes. VPC can be challenging to setup for someone new.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Amazon VPC pricing is based on the data transferred to your VPC. The cost varies depending on the specific resources we are using, such as instances and RDS databases. We have multiple AWS accounts, each paying around $400-500 monthly for VPCs. We have completed a lot of things in use because there is another configuration. If you don't want to do anything, the chargeable rate will apply. The configuration setup is very minimal, which means that the VPC pricing level is very good.

What other advice do I have?

Many things are available in VPC. I don't know everything about VPC, so I must learn more first.

We have many things in VPC. Before setting up a configuration, we need the network thing. So, we are using the VPC. We are using private IP addresses because we need to arrange for multiple servers to be on the same network.

If you are configuring anything at a major level, you should use it. You should assign your IP address. Imagine you will be providing the default IP address, but it's not secure. You should consider your IP within your region.

If you go with the cloud, you should be able to network things.

Overall, I rate the solution a ten out of ten.
