I like that it is manageable.
Technical Consultant at KPN IT Solutions - Trusted Services
Has good performance and manageability
Pros and Cons
- "VxBlock has good performance, so that is an advantage."
- "It's a good product but the price could be lowered. It's expensive."
What is most valuable?
What needs improvement?
It's a good product but the price could be lowered. It's expensive. The total cost of ownership is a very important figure against quality and performance and pricing. It should be the total package and that is the reason why I think this is a very good product.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is stable.

It is scalable. The system is built for customers.
How are customer service and support?
I have not needed technical support. Until now I don't need technical support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We also used Dell, HPE, and sometimes Cisco.
VxBlock has good performance, so that is an advantage.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was straightforward. I have to do maintenance on it. That is the reason why I was searching for this kind of information.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate it an eight out of ten.
In the next release, I would like to see more performance, but every three months they increase this figure already.

A complete solution that provides a converged infrastructure for easy troubleshooting
Pros and Cons
- "With a converged infrastructure, it's easy to troubleshoot from network to server issues from a single point of reference."
- "The solution could use a clearer description of working methods to tell people more about its use cases."
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution to manage our network and virtualization environment.
What is most valuable?
With a converged infrastructure, it's easy to troubleshoot from network to server issues from a single point of reference.
The ease of management is another valuable feature.
What needs improvement?
The solution could use a clearer description of working methods to tell people more about its use cases.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with VxBlock for about three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable, but it is not too easy since it has to do with OEM management by increasing storage.
How are customer service and support?
Customer support has come through for all the technical issues we have faced.
How was the initial setup?
The maintenance of the solution is not difficult, and a separate team handled the setup.
What about the implementation team?
Staff members deployed the solution with input from a third party.
What other advice do I have?
One should compare solutions vis-a-vis the price and the efficiency, as what Dell might offer at their price might be offered either at a better price or at a lower efficiency, but that depends on one's use case and how comfortable they are with the other solution.
I think Dell has a complete solution that provides both computers and storage.
I rate the solution an eight out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Very stable, good performance, but needs a single management console, clear process for upgrades and scaling, and better support
Pros and Cons
- "Its performance is very good."
- "It is a good product, but for us, it is like a black box. We are not really sure about its internal components, and how to do the terminal upgrade, and how to make sure about the security of the device. We understand how it works, but in order to do the upgrades, we have to get help from the company. We cannot do it ourselves. In another model that we had, the internal team could do the upgrade but not in this one. There is no clear process for a new upgrade or update. They should provide a software intelligence tool that has a dashboard where you can see the current firmware, the latest firmware, and the documentation and the process for the upgrade. For VxBlock, we have different management consoles. There is no single management console that you can use to manage all components inside VxBlock. Their scale up and scale out process is also not clear. Their support is also a little bit slow in responding to the cases."

For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using this solution for six to eight months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is easy to scale, but we didn't try scaling it.
How are customer service and technical support?
I don't have much experience with them, but they are a little bit slow in responding to the cases. In Saudi Arabia, the support for Dell EMC is not that good. Their support should be faster.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We have tried hyper-converged infrastructure from Nutanix. I prefer Nutanix because you can scale it very easily. The upgrades and updates are very simple. Their support is also great. We have very good experience with their support.
How was the initial setup?
It is a little bit complex because we are using Epic EMR in our main core application.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate Dell EMC VxBlock System a seven out of ten. It is a good product, but their support is not that good. Support is one of the main factors based on which we evaluate a product.

Comes with one console to monitor everything, but there are issues in managing specific components
Pros and Cons
- "The monitoring and management parts are the most valuable. Monitoring is specifically valuable because you have one console to monitor everything. This console is called Vision."
- "We are finding it a bit challenging in terms of the management of a specific VxBlock component. Currently, we have different units as a part of the block storage. We have one for Cisco equipment and one for Dell. When we have an issue in the infrastructure, Dell EMC VxBlock System should automatically detect it and send a notification to VC support, but, unfortunately, it is doing that only for one unit. It is not working for Cisco components. We have informed them about this area of improvement, and they are working on this. The way different parts are integrated should be improved. We should have one console to log in to see all the infrastructure in terms of each machine and hardware."
What is most valuable?
The monitoring and management parts are the most valuable. Monitoring is specifically valuable because you have one console to monitor everything. This console is called Vision.

For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for three years now.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The system is quite stable. We have not faced any major issues. The issues that we faced were just minor and manageable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
In terms of scalability, it is good. The beauty is that we can scale whatever we want. We can add more compute nodes, storage nodes, or memory. We have a variety of users from different groups.
How are customer service and technical support?
Their technical support can be improved because, sometimes, when you report an issue, it takes a while for them to respond.
How was the initial setup?
It is complicated with the latest technology because you have to connect with the switches, servers, storage, and everything. All the components have to be connected so that the system can work properly. It might take three to five days, which is a lot of time.
What about the implementation team?
We used an integrator.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Its price is high. That's why people are now moving to hyper-converge.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise to stop using the normal spinning disk and going for an all-flash disk on the storage because of the performance issues.
I would rate Dell EMC VxBlock System a six out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Pros and Cons
- "Good default features."
- "The consistency of disc quality could be improved."
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution for database applications, using all the core features. We're a customer of VxBlock.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features of the solution would be its good default features and the compressions. Those are the features we use regularly.
What needs improvement?
For VxBlock, the consistency of disc quality could be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using this solution for almost six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The product is very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The product is scalable.
How are customer service and technical support?
We've used technical support from time to time and they are very good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We made some comparisons with other products - WMC and HP 3par but have never used them.
How was the initial setup?
Setup is fairly straightforward, deployment took between two and three weeks.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate this product a nine out of 10.

A high-performance replacement for our legacy data center in a single cabinet
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable feature of this solution is the speed."
- "This solution does not support Hyper-V, and we would like the new version to be supported and certified to work with Hyper-V."
What is our primary use case?
We use this solution in our clearance and distribution department.
We are using this solution for virtualization with Hyper-V. Our entire infrastructure is Hyper-V, and it's working fine. We have a twenty-eight blade system with E-SATA storage, which is fantastic and very fast.
This is an on-premises deployment.
How has it helped my organization?
We completely replaced our old data center using this solution. We used to have around one hundred and fifty blades, two storage devices, two Cisco SAN Directors, and a lot of fibre cables. We have replaced all of this with just two VxBlock cabinets. It is very fast and very neat. There are no wires outside.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of this solution is the speed. We have a legacy data center that is separated from the blades. It used to be very slow, and now it is very fast.
We have had no trouble with backups.
What needs improvement?
This solution does not support Hyper-V, and we would like the new version to be supported and certified to work with Hyper-V. It only supports VMware. We need this as a virtualization solution for the hardware.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using this solution for about one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This is a stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Our experience has been very good and we are considering increasing our usage of this solution by adding blades. Our local partner has told us that we can extend this solution using another cabinet.
How are customer service and technical support?
We do not contact technical support directly. Rather, we go through our partner for which we have a support contract. Our local partner takes care of monitoring the status of our system.
If we need to then we are able to open support tickets.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We replaced our entire legacy data center using this solution.
How was the initial setup?
There was an issue because of the Hyper-V, but after it was configured, everything worked very nicely.
What about the implementation team?
We had a VMware group from the UAE assist us with the implementation.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We purchased this solution with a ten-year manufacturer warranty, and we have a three-year warranty with our local partner.
What other advice do I have?
This is a solution that I recommend for others.
The biggest lesson that I have learned from using this solution is that the vision for technology is always changing. As administrators, we worry about new technology because if one thing goes wrong in a cabinet that contains everything, how much will be affected? So far, nothing has happened and everything is working nicely. It is very good.
This solution ships from the manufacturer with VMware, but our Hyper-V is working fine. We expected to have an issue, but it works.
I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.
