A stable solution with good technical support that is user-friendly and easy to set up
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is user-friendly and easy to set up."
  • "As most people are aware, the implementation is not easy."

What is most valuable?

The solution is user-friendly and easy to set up.

What needs improvement?

There should be some some simple case settings offered, as well as documentation and video.

As most people are aware, the implementation is not easy.

For how long have I used the solution?

We implemented Barracuda Web Application Firewall around four years ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is stable. We have encountered no issues in this regard.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is quite good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have primarily been working with Barracuda Web Application Firewall, as we have not yet done much testing of other products.

How was the initial setup?

It is not easy to implement the solution, although its duration varies with the number of applications that one wishes to deploy. We are talking about a maximum of one hour for a basic configuration.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price is reasonable, more so than other products.

What other advice do I have?

The solution looks good to me. We find that its features provide us with solutions for practically all our needs.

Our customers run the gamut from small, medium to enterprise.

I rate Barracuda Web Application Firewall as an eight or nine out of ten.

A solution which offers simplicity and is scalable, stable, easy to install and offers good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "Our customers value the solution's simplicity."
  • "It would be better if their updates would be released annually."

What is most valuable?

Our customers value the solution's simplicity.

What needs improvement?

Occasionally, upon installation of the Energize Updates, the plans will go off track, something which necessitates us calling up their support team for another update.

The frequency of the release of the updates is also an issue. In the production environment, Firmware cannot be frequently updated. It would be better if their updates would be released annually.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been dealing with Barracuda Web Application Firewall for more than four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and technical support?

Our experience with technical support has been very positive.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

While I would have to check on the price of the solution, I feel it to be okay and it matches the market price.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

F5, Imperva and RedBear are the main competitors of Barracuda in our area.

I do not know if they possess certain features which Barracuda Web Application Firewall lacks. I would have to check.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend the solution to someone looking for a new web application firewall.

I rate Barracuda Web Application Firewall as an eight out of ten. I do not give the product a higher rating because there are other solutions in Sri Lanka of which the vendors are aware through the Gartner Reports. I believe the solution is not not counted amongst the Gartner leader Quadrant.

Great technical support, good stability, and offers reasonable pricing
Pros and Cons
  • "Even when we were upgrading to a new OS, we didn't have any difficulties with the product. The stability is good."
  • "While the UI is good, it can get a little bit complicated."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use this solution for security purposes. We use it as a firewall.

What is most valuable?

The interface is great. It's one of the most valuable aspects of the solution.

The visibility we are able to achieve is quite good.

The traffic monitoring is very helpful and the URL filtering has been excellent.

Even when we were upgrading to a new OS, we didn't have any difficulties with the product. The stability is good.

We have found that the technical support is very good.

The pricing of the product isn't overly expensive.

What needs improvement?

While the UI is good, it can get a little bit complicated. It's not like Next-Gen Firewalls. I need to remember all of the tabs. The sub-tabs should be at the right as they are in the Next-Gen. Mostly, Next-Gen firewalls have everything on the left panel and it will reappear. It would be nice if there was a little more consistency.

I only really have one year of experience with the solution. Therefore, it's hard to discuss missing features. I need more time to explore the product first.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We haven't had any issues with the stability or the performance, even when switching to a new OS. It's reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

While the solution may be scalable, I don't have enough background to really comment. I haven't been involved in scaling.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is quite good. That's the main reason everyone is shifting to Barracuda.

It's from India. I'm in the Middle East. Even though the product is from the UAE, the Middle East, the support is from India. They have good engineers that are well-trained. That said, if you need an L3 issue resolved, those engineers are from other regions. Typically an Indian tech will communicate with the other region directly. The support in the case of L3s likely comes from Europe. In any case, everyone is very helpful and responsive, and we are satisfied with the level of support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not overly complex or difficult. It's easy enough to execute. That said, the burden has to be getting a bit of the knowledge in regards to routing. That's a tricky area. However, it's pretty much the same as a Next-Gen Firewall configuration.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is okay, however, there are a few other competitors that are a little bit lower. It's still reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

I'm an end-user and a customer.

I would rate the solution at an eight out of ten. Sometimes the solution can be tricky around filtering, which is why I don't give it perfect marks.

Protects our applications and has good support
Pros and Cons
  • "We use Barracuda to protect the application. That's the main feature we use it for."
  • "Sometimes when we put it in action, we have some blogs that appear as false positives. I think that it's improving. Barracuda should minimize false positives."

What is our primary use case?

We use Barracuda for all the cloud applications in Azure.

What is most valuable?

We use Barracuda to protect the application. That's the main feature we use it for.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes when we put it in action, we have some blogs that appear as false positives. I think that it's improving. Barracuda should minimize false positives.

They should make it easier to learn how to use applications.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Barracuda Web Application for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is okay. We haven't had any issues with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We don't really scale it. We have around 500 users.

How are customer service and technical support?

We don't have issues with support. I had an issue with the console where I could not access the console from the inside network. When I accessed it from the inside network, they kicked me. I opened the case with support, we checked the perimeter firewall, and we tried to fix the problem, but it's still the problem.

Support wants me to check the firewall. I checked the administrator for the perimeter firewall and put all the rules for the communication but they told me to upgrade the version. I did and the problem still persisted.

I would rate their support an eight out of ten.

What about the implementation team?

We had a partner who did the installation.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Barracuda an eight out of ten.

  • "Its recommendation about the probabilities on the website is great. It also has free probability managers for the website, which is really helpful. The protection engine, signature-based protection behavior, and analysis features are also great. It also has an ATP module for sandbox scanning and behavior analysis for file uploads."
  • "Its interface can be better. It is not very friendly."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for website and web service protection.

What is most valuable?

Its recommendation about the probabilities on the website is great. It also has free probability managers for the website, which is really helpful.

The protection engine, signature-based protection behavior, and analysis features are also great. It also has an ATP module for sandbox scanning and behavior analysis for file uploads.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with this solution for three years.

The initial setup was straightforward. It took us a day to deploy this solution.

Good technical support and security features but needs better documentation
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution offers multiple security features. There are machine learning features and great URL encryption. It also offers multi-protocol support against DDoS attacks."
  • "The documentation is lacking. It's not like what you'd get if you were using Juniper or Cisco. They need to expand on it and make it more useful."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution to secure most data centers. We also use it for mobile apps for malicious automated attacks.

What is most valuable?

The solution offers multiple security features. There are machine learning features and great URL encryption. It also offers multi-protocol support against DDoS attacks.

The API security they offer is quite good.

The technical support on offer is very good.

There's multiple application delivery which is impressive.

What needs improvement?

The deployment isn't very user-friendly.

There are a lot of up and coming competitors in the space, and there's always new technology coming out. The solution needs to make sure that it keeps up with what's going on in the industry to make sure they don't get left behind.

The documentation is lacking. It's not like what you'd get if you were using Juniper or Cisco. They need to expand on it and make it more useful.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for almost four and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good. It's pretty reliable. There aren't bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. It's good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability has been fine. It's been quite good for us. We don't have complaints in that regard.

How are customer service and technical support?

We've always been pretty happy with technical support. We find them helpful and knowledgable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I also work with Fortinet solutions and I find that sometimes they can be limiting and have their own set of difficulties.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is okay, however, it's not particularly user-friendly. I wouldn't describe it as complex. It's more difficult.

What about the implementation team?

We are system integrators. We can handle implementations.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is okay. Unlike other competitors, you are able to negotiate a little bit, which can help drive down the cost to the company.

What other advice do I have?

We're a solution partner, an integrator. We have partnership-level agreements with the solution.

We have multiple deployment models. We use it on-premises as well as on the cloud using both Amazon Web Services and Azure.

Overall, I'd rate the solution seven out of ten. It would be hard for any product to rate a ten out of ten for me. However, to get a bit of a higher mark, it should offer better documentation and be more user-friendly, particularly where deployment is concerned. I'd still recommend Barracuda, though. It's pretty solid.

Fantastic backend support and is easy to deploy
Pros and Cons
  • "The stability of the solution is good. I don't think we've experienced bugs, crashes, or glitches."
  • "The reporting aspect of the solution needs improvement. I don't find that it's very good. They could do some work on it to make it much better. It's not that the reporting isn't secure. It's just that I would prefer to store my reports for an extended period of time. Right now, that's not possible and I'd prefer it if that could change. I also would say that the reports themselves are expensive."

What is most valuable?

One of the best aspects of the solution is the support provided. Their backend support is fantastic. I've found it's superior to other products, including Cisco. The way the support team treats its customers is great. They really walk you through everything and show you how easy it is to mend issues.

I find the solution to be easy to deploy. You don't need too much technical skill, so you don't need an expert level of understanding.

What needs improvement?

The reporting aspect of the solution needs improvement. I don't find that it's very good. They could do some work on it to make it much better. It's not that the reporting isn't secure. It's just that I would prefer to store my reports for an extended period of time. Right now, that's not possible and I'd prefer it if that could change. I also would say that the reports themselves are expensive.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution since 2009. It's been just over ten years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good. I don't think we've experienced bugs, crashes, or glitches.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability with the solution is good. It just requires more licenses, like every other product. If you only apply for the environment, it's scalable with the licenses you have. If you're on the physical appliance, you just have to scale it up by pressing the appliance. It probably won't be just deployed on Azure, because we would need to add more licenses.

We've been adding to our system for a while ago, and we haven't run into any issues with continuing to scale.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support offered by Barracuda is excellent. It's one of the greatest selling points of the solution, They are very supportive and help answer any questions we have.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have previous experience using Cisco.

How was the initial setup?

The solution doesn't require a user to be too technical. I would say the initial setup is very straightforward. The deployment is easy. It's not what I would call complex in any way.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Overall, I would say that I'm satisfied with the pricing. It's got a good range of pricing, and the cost matches the quality level you get out of the solution.

What other advice do I have?

I used to be a customer before, however, now I am partners with Barracuda.

We use both on-premises and public cloud deployment models.

Overall, I'd give the solution a nine out of ten. I'd give it full marks, but it does have issues on the reporting side. The reports are a lot more expensive, even more so than the work itself. That's why I did not give it a 10.

That said, I would recommend Barracuda Firewalls to anybody, any day of the week. They're fantastic.

Simple to manage with a good client VPN and content filtering
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are the client VPN and content filtering."
  • "The incident reporting needs to be improved."

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the client VPN and content filtering.

This solution is simple to manage.

The interface and the dashboards are ok.

What needs improvement?

The incident reporting needs to be improved.

The local technical support in Poland is not very reliable.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the Barracuda Web Application Firewall for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is very stable. It is great.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have only the single web application firewall running on-premises, so I cannot comment on scalability other than to say that I haven't had any problems.

We have 18 people who are being protected by this firewall and we do have plans to increase to approximately 100.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have been in contact with technical support and while I feel that they are not very reliable here in Poland, they are good enough and I am satisfied with them. The escalation was okay and the troubleshooting was also okay.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of this solution is okay.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to anybody who is implementing this solution is to find a good partner to assist with the implementation.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
