Implementation and management ease improve efficiency, while marketplace expansion could enhance adaptability
It is all about day one, which is all about implementation or deployment of a Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) cluster. Ease of deployment is the first thing which I appreciate because I can actually use something called Commander user interface. Using that, I can easily deploy Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) workload clusters. That is the beauty of it. Those options are available from the UI itself, so ease of management is present. The logging and monitoring capabilities deserve an eight out of ten because they have integration with many open-source tools and they are actually providing that as a logging and monitoring bundle where Nutanix is responsible for a single point of support. Though native encryption is available in the product, it depends on customer use cases whether they want to use their own encryption or proceed with the native encryption available in the tool.

Efficient deployment with resource optimization and multi-region stability
There are several areas where OpenShift could improve. The interface has numerous UI bugs that need addressing. Furthermore, the latest version has deprecated the deployment config, which has its own advantages compared to the deployment container. Lastly, there is no built-in auto-scaling plugin at the OpenShift level; this needs to be addressed as it's available at the cloud provider level, like IBM Cloud.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The platform is stable."
"The platform is easy to set up, maintain, and update."
"Migration from public cloud to private cloud and vice versa is actually seamless using Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP), making it very handy when providing a Kubernetes platform for customers needing on-premises solutions during application modernization."
"Red Hat's security throughout the stack and software supply chain is good. It is a lightweight operating system. You don't have to worry about the security patches on the system. You can update the entire environment with security patches, which is a nice feature."
"The best feature is the management for the port life cycle, which automatically recycles, pulls, and scales up and down based on needs and requests."
"The console or the GUI of OpenShift is awesome. You can do a lot of things from there. You can perform administration tasks as well as development tasks."
"They have built on top of Kubernetes. Most of the Kubernetes latest technology is already supported by the solution."
"OpenShift is a user-friendly container platform with a solid GUI that helps you follow what is going on and gives you an overview of all your clusters. It's more user-friendly than the Kubernetes itself. The interface helps you learn the platform and provides access to some features or specific comments."
"Technical support is good; they are fast and reliable."
"Everything is packaged into OpenShift Container Platform."
"Openshift is a very developer-friendly product."

Cons

"There are some limitations with the non-air gap version as it requires complete internet access, which poses restrictions due to government regulations."
"They have to improve their marketplace offering for Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP) which is currently limited."
"The initial setup can be hard."
"Getting the solution quickly and troubleshooting quickly are both areas where I think it needs some work."
"I believe that the documentation part is an area with certain shortcomings where improvements are required."
"There should be a simplification of the overall cluster environment. It should require fewer resources. Just to run a simple Hello World app, it requires about seven servers, and that's just crazy. I understand that it is fully redundant, but it's prohibitively expensive to get something simple going."
"Setting up OpenShift isn't easy. I rate it three out of ten for ease of setup. We're deploying it in three phases. They're in the second phase now. The total deployment time will be five months. We expect to complete the deployment this March. There are 13 people on three teams working on this deployment."
"The product's interface is a bit buggy."
"With the recent trend of cloud-native, fully managed serverless services, I don't see much documentation about how a customer should move from on-prem to the cloud, or what is the best way to do a lift-and-shift. Even if you are on AWS OCP, which is self-managed infra services, and you want to use the ROSA managed services, what is the best way to achieve that migration? I don't see documentation for these kinds of use cases from Red Hat."
"Quality of support may be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The license to use the OpenShift Container Platform is free. If you are capable with Java you can modify it."
"The price is slightly on the higher side. It is something that can be worked on because most of the businesses now have margins."
"I'm an architect, so I have no involvement in the pricing and licensing of the platform."
"The solution is expensive, and I rate it an eight out of ten. There is a subscription called OpenShift Plus, which offers additional features and products the vendor provides to complement the OpenShift Container Platform. These include ACM, Red Hat Quay, and Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation."
"OpenShift Container Platform is highly-priced."
"The product pricing is competitive and structured around vCPU subscriptions, aligning with our application requirements."
"We currently have an annual license renewal."
"OpenShift with Red Hat support is pretty costly. We have done a comparison between AWS EKS (Elastic Kubernetes Services) which provides fully managed services from AWS. It's built on open-source-based Kubernetes clusters and it is much cheaper compared to Red Hat, but it is a little expensive compared to ECS provided by AWS."
