A database monitoring solution with anomaly detection capabilities
Pros and Cons
  • "In IT, problems often occur in areas such as applications, web interfaces, or databases. The tool allows users to easily determine the root cause of these issues, whether they stem from the network layer, database layer, or elsewhere."
  • "One area where the tool could improve is by adding support for additional databases. For instance, supporting newer databases like Couchbase or MongoDB would be beneficial."

What is our primary use case?

Our customers' main use cases revolve around database monitoring. While many existing tools can handle basic monitoring tasks, more complex scenarios arise in enterprises. In these cases, customers need to identify bottlenecks and optimize performance. This is where a database performance tool like SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer comes into play.

What is most valuable?

In IT, problems often occur in areas such as applications, web interfaces, or databases. The tool allows users to easily determine the root cause of these issues, whether they stem from the network layer, database layer, or elsewhere.

According to our clients, one of the standout features of SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer is its advanced anomaly detection capabilities. While the tool may not heavily emphasize AI or ML, its advanced analytics and machine learning functionalities monitor extremely well.

What needs improvement?

One area where the tool could improve is by adding support for additional databases. For instance, supporting newer databases like Couchbase or MongoDB would be beneficial.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the product for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the tool's stability as eight or nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

While the tool performs exceptionally well for small and medium-sized enterprises, there may be scalability issues for very large enterprises. Scalability could be improved, particularly in accommodating more servers and databases. Currently, there may be challenges with scalability, requiring the addition of multiple instances to address these limitations. My company has six to eight customers.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support has been excellent. We've had a great relationship with the support team; they've been very proactive. Whenever we needed assistance, they responded within 24 hours.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's deployment is of medium complexity. It can be completed in a few weeks.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Customers need to pay for the subscription-based license annually.

What other advice do I have?

My recommendation would be to explore SolarWinds SAM for database monitoring. SolarWinds SAM can handle alerts and cover various aspects like server, application, and database monitoring. However, if there are specific metrics or use cases that SolarWinds SAM cannot address, consider looking into SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer.

I rate the overall product an eight out of ten. Databases are critical for large enterprises, and customer satisfaction is paramount, particularly for such businesses. Implementing tools like the product is essential to mitigate any potential dissatisfaction. It allows database administrators to address issues before customers even notice problems such as lag.

Helps identify issues that cannot be seen manually and provides complete wait chain for a problem
Pros and Cons
  • "SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer can help us identify issues we cannot see manually."
  • "SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer should provide customization options allowing users to add different columns."

What is most valuable?

I have been using SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer for four to five years.

What needs improvement?

The solution has reporting issues that need to be improved. SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer should provide customization options allowing users to add different columns.

I would also like to see an easier installation process.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer for four to five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer a six to seven out of ten for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product is very scalable and I rate it an eight out of ten for scalability. Two to three database administrators are using SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer in our company.

How are customer service and support?

SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer’s customer support has always helped us, and I rate their customer support an eight out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before using SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer, I used Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) for many years. I switched to SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer because other tools could not provide us with visibility of the wait chain. SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer provided us with the complete wait chain of a problem.

How was the initial setup?

The solution was not difficult to install. The installation process did not take more than two to three minutes.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are no extra costs for maintenance or using the solution's support.

What other advice do I have?

I am using the latest version of SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer. One database administration is enough for the maintenance of the solution. I would recommend SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer to other users.

Overall, I rate SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Good database support and centralized management, but the reporting and dashboards need improvement
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of this solution is the support for older databases and the ability to manage them in a centralized dashboard."
  • "Technical support for this solution needs to be improved."

What is our primary use case?

In my previous company, I was using this solution to implement monitoring callbacks.

Currently, I work for a system integrator and I am implementing DPAs for some of our clients.

We have an on-premises deployment.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of this solution is the support for older databases and the ability to manage them in a centralized dashboard. For example, I can see my SQL servers and DB2 servers on one dashboard.

What needs improvement?

The alerting and reporting functions really need to be improved because they are hard to configure. This is not just an issue for customers. Specialty monitoring is difficult. The reports and alerts should be easier to create.

The dashboards and reports should be more customizable.

The dashboard has become easier to use with the Orion integration, but it still needs improvement.

Technical support for this solution needs to be improved.

I have had some issues with scalability for the Orion interface.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for between three and four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There are two user interfaces for this solution, which are the Orion platform and the DPA. The DPA is quite stable, but the Orion is not so much.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I do not have experience with scaling this product a great deal, although I think that it will be enough for mid-size or large-size companies. At the same time, I don't think it will be used by ISPs or much bigger companies.

How are customer service and technical support?

I do not think that SolarWinds support is very good because it just takes too long to solve the problem. Eventually, they attempt to solve your issues, one way or another, but it takes too long for the support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have knowledge of other solutions, but I did not use another one prior to this.

How was the initial setup?

This solution is very easy to set up.

The deployment normally takes three or four days. This is enough to monitor all of the databases. However, creating reports and dashboards takes much more time than that.

What about the implementation team?

I am the person who implements and deploys this solution for our customers. One it is deployed, the customers can use it easily.

What other advice do I have?

My advice for anybody who is implementing this solution is not to use the default reports. DPA gives very detailed information with customer reports. If you have time to investigate then you will find many good examples of reports and dashboards online.

The solution is quite ready to use as soon as you install it, although there are a lot of custom things that can be implemented.

Overall, this is a good solution but it needs easier reporting and more customizable dashboards. Also, scalability for the Orion sites needs to be improved.

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

We like the ability to drill down queries, and wait times using the Query Advice Dashboard.

What is most valuable?

Ability to drill down queries, and wait times using the Query Advice Dashboard.

How has it helped my organization?

We have multiple applications interfacing with our SQL servers, this allowed us to load balance between servers based on performance data gathered about all applications. I love the ability to very easily see graphical trends.

For how long have I used the solution?

2 years approximately, we started with a small number of SQL servers, now we have added Oracle Enterprise servers. We compared with our existing Foglight solutions and our DBA opted for migrating to SolarWinds.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

No

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No

How are customer service and technical support?

Has been good, but for this product, we have not had any issues requiring assistance. Very easy to implement and use.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We migrated from Foglight, we were already vested in SolarWinds products, we really switched because it removed complexity and still gave great analysis.

How was the initial setup?

Straightforward. Was very impressed.

What about the implementation team?

In House.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We find that the price to value ratio is very good. Much less expensive than other products we were considering.

What other advice do I have?

We use this tool constantly, all new projects with new SQL Servers now require a license for SolarWinds DB Analyzer in order to meet high standards of operation.
