    We also use VMware Vision.

    How was the initial setup?

I was involved in the deployment because I am not on the technical side of things, but I haven't heard of any problems. I assume there is some maintenance involved, but it's nothing out of the ordinary. I don't know how many members of our service team are responsible for the virtualization environment, but the team has 20-30 people. The team has people in various roles, including operations and administrators who deal with that environment and keep it updated.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

StorMagic is competitively priced. It's cheaper than the VMware solution.

What other advice do I have?

I rate StorMagic SvSAN nine out of 10.

High availability, zero data loss, and hardware flexibility
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature of StorMagic SvSAN is its high availability. We have not had any downtime or data loss. Business continuity is highly important."
    • "If we want to want to replicate the VM to the cloud, or off-site, it does not allow it because of asynchronous. There is no option available."

What is our primary use case?

We are using StorMagic SvSAN in the manufacturing industry and at our main regional office where we have ERP software running.

Its only getting better, now StorMagic has SvHCI too !

How has it helped my organization?

Our business employs IoT technology for both manufacturing and application purposes, relying on automated robotic systems to manage the manufacturing process. These systems are overseen by servers, which are crucial for ensuring smooth operations. Any server downtime can have a significant impact on our business. By utilizing StorMagic SvSAN, we have gained data reliability and peace of mind.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of StorMagic SvSAN is its high availability. We have not had any downtime or data loss. Business continuity is highly important.

    What needs improvement?

If we want to want to replicate the VM to the cloud, or off-site, it does not allow it because of asynchronous. There is no option available.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using StorMagic SvSAN for approximately Four and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is highly scalable. I rate the stability of StorMagic SvSAN a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are two distinct setups - one utilized by the entire team of manufacturing technicians for managing the IoT application, with a relatively smaller user base of approximately 30 individuals. The other setup is located in a regional office and is accessed by almost two hundred users, mainly for managing ERPs.

We plan to increase our usage in the future.

I rate the scalability of StorMagic SvSAN an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

I rate the support of StorMagic SvSAN a ten out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Positive

    How was the initial setup?

The task of implementing the solution was relatively simple and we were able to complete it within a day and a half initially. The service provided by the team was commendable and we were able to upgrade and add a cache within a timeframe of six to twelve hours, during which their support was excellent.

I rate the initial setup of StorMagic SvSAN a nine out of ten.

    What about the implementation team?

We have one person that does the implementation of the solution.

    What was our ROI?

From a cost investment perspective, we could achieve the same results with two servers instead of three, which is not the case with other hyper-converged systems where three servers are required. This results in significant capital expenditure savings.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of the solution is reasonable. Our budget was two terabytes and the price met our use case well. The servers and operating hardware are an extra cost. I rate the price of StorMagic SvSAN a ten out of ten.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated VMware vSAN and Dell VxRail. We chose StorMagic SvSAN because of the flexibility, we were not bound by hardware. Additionally, the other types of systems run on three servers while StorMagic SvSAN can run on two.

What other advice do I have?

If you're considering an edge solution or a small setup that doesn't require too many nodes or DR creation, I would strongly recommend StorMagic SvSAN. It doesn't support synchronization, but it's still a reliable option. However, if you need DR asynchronous to the cloud or external sources, you may need to supplement it with a third-party tool.

I rate StorMagic SvSAN an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Easy to use, has good integration, and no issues with technical support
    Pros and Cons
    • "What I found most valuable in StorMagic SvSAN is integration. As a software-defined storage solution, it's also very easy to use and it's the trend in the market today. StorMagic SvSAN also made the customer happy because the customer could use his existing hardware with it. The customer had rack-mounted storage, so he didn't want to purchase a dedicated hardware for storage purposes. He just upgraded his hard disk drives."
    • "In terms of what could be improved in StorMagic SvSAN, I don't have a major issue with it, but its user interface should be more customer-oriented."

What is our primary use case?

My company deployed StorMagic SvSAN for the customer because he was using it as a SAN storage for his virtual machines with virtualization or normal workloads. The customer was upgrading to a Kubernetes virtualization environment, so he needed storage to be able to do that.

    What is most valuable?

What I found most valuable in StorMagic SvSAN is integration. He just upgraded his hard disk drives.

    What needs improvement?

In terms of what could be improved in StorMagic SvSAN, I don't have a major issue with it, but its user interface should be more customer-oriented.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

StorMagic SvSAN is a stable product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

StorMagic SvSAN is a scalable product. One of its major advantages being a software-defined storage solution is scalability.

How are customer service and support?

We didn't use the technical support for StorMagic SvSAN much, but our customer didn't share any major problems while talking to support.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for StorMagic SvSAN was straightforward, but some of the customizations in terms of application performance needed some enhancement. Deploying the entire solution took one and a half weeks including the optimization.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

A different team is responsible for StorMagic SvSAN licensing, so I'm unsure of the licensing model for it.

What other advice do I have?

My company is not using StorMagic SvSAN, as it is an implementer. The solution was just deployed for a couple of hours.

StorMagic SvSAN is in my company's portfolio and it's a solution being recommended more, especially to a customer who is open to software-defined storage versus traditional storage.

I'm rating StorMagic SvSAN eight out of ten.

Helps ensure business continuity and gives zero downtime
    Pros and Cons
    • "We went for this solution for two reasons: the first reason is because it was an ERP solution and it was cost effective for a two terabyte requirement, and the second reason is because it gives zero downtime and it works with two nodes rather than three nodes, unlike other solutions."
    • "There are two features missing: there's no REST API functionality, and there is no date duplication in it."
    • "It's not a scalable product. It's meant for a small organization."

What is our primary use case?

This is being used as an ERP solution. There are 600 retail showrooms that are accessing the application for online billing, so we can't afford any downtime. It basically helps us ensure that there is business continuity. There is no billing, which is stopped while the retail is going on. In the past, we've had some downtime, so this solution is helping us.

We are using the latest version, which is 6.3. The solution is deployed on-premises. There's no cloud version.

    What is most valuable?

We went for this solution for two reasons. The first reason is because it was an ERP solution and it was cost effective for a two terabyte requirement. The second reason is because it gives zero downtime and it works with two nodes rather than three nodes, unlike other solutions.

    What needs improvement?

I'd like to see multiple nodes. I'd like to see snapshots added to it. There are two features missing: there's no REST API functionality, and there is no date duplication in it.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's pretty stable so far. There haven't been any complaints.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's not a scalable product. It's meant for a small organization.

How are customer service and support?

    Technical support is pretty good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using a replication solution, which wasn't a virtual SAN. It wasn't software defined storage. It was more like a replication solution, which is replicating one server to the other. In case the server fails, the other works. Then there was a downtime of two or three minutes, so it wasn't strong enough to give zero downtime.

    How was the initial setup?

Installation was straightforward. Only one person is necessary to manage the solution.

    What about the implementation team?

    We used an integrator.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing cost is $7,000 per two nodes for two terabytes.

There are additional costs. Auto-tiering is a separate cost. Encryption is a separate cost. That could range from $1,500 for two nodes, to $5,000.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution 7 out of 10.

My advice is that if you're looking at a two node kind of deployment or looking at edge deployment, it could be a good solution.

The sales team is a little difficult to deal with. It's not a very transparent organization, so they're very rigid on certain things.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises

Effective redundancy, good interface, and responsive support
    Pros and Cons
    • "StorMagic SvSAN is a very effective solution and the interface is good."
    • "In the period we've been running the solution it's been working well and the redundancy has been flawless."
    • "The deployment of StorMagic SvSAN is very small. However, you need some time to do it. It's important to make a test deployment before the real deployment."

What is our primary use case?

I am using StorMagic SvSAN in a biogas plant for industrial automation systems.

    What is most valuable?

StorMagic SvSAN is a very effective solution and the interface is good.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using StorMagic SvSAN for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have found StorMagic SvSAN to be stable and have good redundancy.

The stability of StorMagic SvSAN has proven to be very stable. In the period we've been running the solution it's been working well and the redundancy has been flawless. This is where you turn off one server the other one is functional without the other.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

StorMagic SvSAN is a highly scalably solution.

To have scalability in StorMagic SvSAN you have to set the license for different steps. The licenses you can purchase are for two, four, six, et cetera terabytes. If you want to scale up the terabytes you expand with hard drives and change the license. There's no problem with scaling.

We have approximately 40 people using this solution. The solution runs in the background and they would not know they are using it but they are.

How are customer service and support?

I am satisfied with the support. I found it simple to receive the resources I needed from them. When you contact the help desk, you receive a quick response.

    How was the initial setup?

The deployment of StorMagic SvSAN is very small. However, you need some time to do it. It's important to make a test deployment before the real deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing of StorMagic SvSAN is fairly good because if you compare it with VMware, it's at a better price. This is an important thing to remember.

We use the solution in a close network. We would like the possibility to activate the solution offline. At this time there is no offline activation, this would be appreciated.

The price of the solution is good is very good. Two terabytes are approximately 1,000 euros per node.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have evaluated HPE StoreVirtual, VmWare vSAN and Starwind Virtual SAN (vSAN) is very similar to it.

What other advice do I have?

We had some issues with StorMagic SvSAN because it is deployed on Microsoft Hyper-V, not VMware. In this Microsoft Hyper-V, there were some problems with servers in 2019. This was a part of the operating system that had a special update. It's a little complicated but it was fixed in the end. The problem was that when we had the issue, we did not realize what the problem was. We managed to address this issue and they found a workaround. The problem has been solved.

I would recommend this solution to others.

I rate StorMagic SvSAN a nine out of ten.

A software-defined storage solution with a useful synchronization feature
    Pros and Cons
    • "This synchronization is easy with StorMagic, and we can establish availability between servers."
    • "The initial setup and installation are very easy with StorMagic because StorMagic has a VMware vCenter plugin."
    • "The only improvement area I can see is their licensing. For example, the memory caching feature is only available in an advanced license. Normally, it's in a standard license. It would be better if they had memory caching features in the product. Some backup features should also be in the product"

What is our primary use case?

We use StorMagic SvSAN in two hotels. The hotel needed redundant servers, and we installed two servers on each site with StorMagic. We use it for server availability. We used it with VMware, and we synchronize disks with StorMagic and VMware disks as common storage on both servers.

    What is most valuable?

This synchronization is easy with StorMagic, and we can establish availability between servers.

    What needs improvement?

The only improvement area I can see is their licensing. For example, the memory caching feature is only available in an advanced license. Normally, it's in a standard license. It would be better if they had memory caching features in the product. Some backup features should also be in the product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using StorMagic SvSAN for a couple of months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's very stable and uses very low process and memory resources. It works well.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable for edge products. Because on the edge, you can use a maximum of three servers. If you use many servers, you should use data center products like VMware vSAN or Nutanix. For edge, it's very scalable because, with three servers, you can have about 100 virtual machines in the area. It's more than enough for edge situations.

How are customer service and technical support?

I have contacted StorMagic sales representatives and technical consultants before installation. They are very helpful, and they know the product and the configurations very well. They helped with the trial installations and post-setup review. I more than appreciate StorMagic's technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with data center products, but that was before StorMagic. I was looking for a cheap edge product that was suitable for two servers. One of my colleagues suggested StorMagic, and it's our gig now.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup and installation are very easy with StorMagic because StorMagic has a VMware vCenter plugin. When you install the plugin, it's easy to deploy StorMagic appliances and configure all of them.

    What about the implementation team?

We implemented this solution by ourselves.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's fairly cheap when compared to other options. But it can be improved as some features may not be available in the standard license. The vendor positions it as an edge product, so it isn't suitable to compare with VMware vSAN or Nutanix because that's another product altogether.

What other advice do I have?

I would generally recommend this product to potential users.

On a scale from one to ten, I would give StorMagic SvSAN a nine.

    Coupling with VMware
    Pros and Cons
    • "Now the value proposition to customers in mid size companies with Remote offices is enormous and this is an immense win for StorMagic allowing them to effectively be distributed and marketed all under the VMware ‘best of breed’ software solution banner."

It’s only been a matter of a few weeks since I saw StorMagic at VFD4 and they delivered a great solution aimed at ROBO. Today they’ve made another ground breaking announcement (stop the press !!)

Today StorMagic and VMware have announced a partnership which means customers can now benefit from ordering a VMware ROBO license (sold in packs of 25) and this can be coupled with SvSAN from StorMagic. This effectively means that the partnership allows VMware to recommend the SvSAN software as part of its ROBO pack!! The ROBO pack is available from VMware or its resellers and the SvSAN can be purchased from StorMagic and its resellers. BOOM !!

Essentially the solution revolves around providing shared storage for a 2 node setup with local disk providing all the great features such as DRS and HA and other advanced VMware features. This is constructed in the form of a VSA software solution. Ideal for ROBO deployments where cost is a big factor and companies are seeking to centrally manage these offices from a central location. Of course this centers around availability and causing minimum downtime at a remote site – KEEP COSTS LOW AND PROVIDE HIGH AVAILABILITY FOR REMOTE BRANCH OFFICES. Very simple strategy and one that is true to heart for this company. Here’s a simple representation provided by StorMagic:

Please don’t be confused between VMware’s VSAN and StorMagic’s SvSAN. They are clearly very different and aimed at different markets. This is depicted in the excellent graphic that StorMagic has simplified below:

Now the value proposition to customers in mid size companies with Remote offices is enormous and this is an immense win for Stormagic allowing them to effectively be distributed and marketed all under the VMware ‘best of breed’ software solution banner. If you ask me, it looks like the name StorMagic is going to become more widespread than ever before and CEO – Hans O’Sullivan – must be extremely proud of his efforts over the last few years in pushing this company through the various barriers of entry in a competitive software world.

Well what does this mean for VMware I hear you ask ? Well, VMware know that they want to focus on certain markets and let their channel partners do what they do best whilst using them as the underlying hypervisor. With VSAN gaining a lot of momentum, it only makes sense for them to utilise a company like StorMagic who has developed their product to fit 2 node setups where VMware cannot.

Does this mean that StorMagic is going to eventually be bought out by the big virtualisation giants ?? Never say never but I’d like to see how the product is developed over the next year as I’m sure there is more to come from this Bristol based company………yes you heard it……….a UK company making waves globally and this is very pleasing to see.
