I use the solution for storage. We use it for application data storage and retrieval and for data backup. It has various use cases for storing applications, platforms, or other data types.

What is most valuable?

What needs improvement?

I believe the usage reporting could be simplified, particularly for billing purposes. Overall, I find Amazon S3 Glacier's reporting system somewhat confusing compared to other hyperscalers in the market.

In terms of improvements, I believe AWS could enhance the service by providing regional accelerators to reduce network latency and offering options for caching buckets for easier configuration. Additionally, providing options to specify usage duration for particular sessions or partitions would be beneficial. While it is intuitive to some extent, there is room for improvement to make it even more user-friendly.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Monitoring apps and systems should be part of deployment. You should be able to set up auto-scaling and alerts during deployment. For example, you could get a warning if CPU usage hits 70 percent and a critical alert at 80 percent.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We haven't come across many instances of large data volume. However, when we encounter it, it seems to be more about ensuring that our applications can handle the workload. Fortunately, we haven't experienced any significant lag issues. 

How are customer service and support?

I haven't contacted the support team yet. We don't have any specific support package from Amazon for the services we're using. Instead, we rely on Amazon's public support. 

How was the initial setup?

Amazon S3 Glacier's deployment is straightforward. The deployment process typically involves several steps. Firstly, you must acquire the image, select the appropriate zone, and deploy it within it. Following that, you would define the necessary parameters. In my experience, I've mostly worked with virtual machines rather than containers.

Typically, a team of just one person is sufficient for deployment and maintenance, maybe with a mentor. 

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I've operated with Amazon S3 Glacier in two modes. Firstly, there's the trial mode, where I experimented with the platform, learned its functionalities, and applied it to my work. Secondly, there's the corporate account mode, where my team handles the operations, and I receive billing reports. 

What other advice do I have?

I haven't extensively used the retrieval options. Generally, we haven't encountered any significant issues with the service, although occasional network latency might occur due to various factors such as server positioning. However, the retrieval process has been fairly reliable.

Rating the tool on a scale from one to ten is quite challenging. It's akin to comparing different brands of ovens, such as Murphy Richards, Samsung, or LG. All of them are excellent in performing their basic function. However, the differences lie in their operation, user interface, and user-friendliness. Similarly, AWS stands out as a leader in virtual services, but comparing it directly to others is not straightforward.

I rate it a nine out of ten. The tool's integration into existing workflows is simple. Whether or not to recommend it depends on the requirements of the individual or organization. It's essential to assess what kind of data they intend to use it for and what their data needs are. Appropriate recommendations can be made based on these factors and other qualifying queries.

The solution helped us to meet our compliance needs. We use Amazon S3 Glacier as a platform as a Service (PaaS). If you have a virtual server, you can create a copy of the solution on an entire virtual machine. In case it goes down or someone messes with the configurations, you could just easily activate the copy.

Amazon S3 Glacier is expensive as far as virtual machines and data storage are concerned. That's why I minimized the data storage as much as possible. Two to three people are required for the solution's deployment and maintenance. They need to have a proper understanding of each different environment where the solution needs to be deployed.

Amazon S3 Glacier works like OneDrive, and it's straightforward to upload or download from it. I would recommend the solution to other users. Hosting static websites is straightforward, but you need a specialist to guide you to deploy dynamic websites on Amazon S3 Glacier.

The solution is easy to manage, and I rate it an eight out of ten for its ease of management.

Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Users have to pay for what they use. You can easily scale the solution from 15 to 20 terabytes, but you have to pay for that in the next bill cycle. Amazon S3 Glacier is used by around 100 users from the development team in our organization.

The solution's initial setup is straightforward and not complex. In the initial legacy, we used to put our servers in our data centers, look for storage, and give a path to that storage. In Amazon S3 Glacier, you can directly put your credentials for the portal login and upload your data.

What about the implementation team?

Amazon S3 Glacier doesn't take much time to deploy. You have to log in to a simple user portal for AWS; do two or three clicks, and you are good to go. Individuals without much technical expertise can install the solution. However, you need a technical person to manage all the accounts.

What was our ROI?

Our organization doesn't need to spend money creating infrastructure on their premises. Since Amazon S3 Glacier is a cloud-based solution, we don't have to put machines in data centers or use hardware storage in the data center.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Other on-premises storage solutions are much more expensive than Amazon S3 Glacier. Customers prefer Amazon S3 Glacier because it is a cheap and pay-as-you-go solution.

There is no licensing for Amazon S3 Glacier. It has a billing cycle, where you have to pay for what you use at the end of the month. If you use more, you have to pay more. If you use less, then you have to pay less.

What other advice do I have?

Amazon S3 Glacier is a completely cloud-based solution.

What is our primary use case?

We use Amazon S3 Glacier for hosting web files for testing.

We take a lot of data from the police to do ANPR. It's basically for big data to allow bandwidth on the data center, where there are about 1,000 images per second coming through to the data center.

What is most valuable?

AWS Lambda is the most valuable part of the solution because it gives you a code interface for everything.

What needs improvement?

Their pricing structure is always a big topic. It's so difficult to understand. I had a personal account once, and I was so scared to type in my credit card because I wasn't sure how much I would be charged.

At home, I might turn on the VM to test something, and I might be on there for three minutes wondering how much it could cost. The solution might tell you there are so many hours of free usage and a free VM, but it's still scary because you don't know how much it will cost, even if you go over one second.

The price structure needs massive simplifying and made crystal clear so people know what they're paying.

I rate the stability a nine-point nine out of ten. They've got shared data services, giving you an SLA of about 0.001%.

There's a huge amount of data on Amazon's data center. Every camera in the West Midlands takes photographs of cars constantly and loads all the data into the data center. Since Lambda is Python, I'd rate the scalability a ten out of ten. I understand the API Gateway completely. But when it comes to security, I'd rate it a three out of ten. AWS, as a whole package for what it provides, I rate its scalability a seven out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support team has a lot of people who know their stuff.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is difficult, not because of applications like S3 or VMs or firewalls and gateways, but because of security. The most important thing about using AWS isn't the tools you will use. It's the security you apply to it. The solution's security is a complex area involving services that talk to each other and how the users interact with those services, whether internal or external, to be logged into AWS. The people in security need to be certified.

The deployment was a continual process, working with several external organizations, such as the transport police in my case. Setting up Amazon takes under an hour if you've got everything available. But the process starts with knowing the tools we need to achieve what we're trying to do. Amazon is very good at talking, explaining what they've got, and upselling. They'll tell me exactly what you need, though they won't tell me how much it costs. But that process takes months to understand unless we get free services to trial and test the solution before you start going into it.

I've seen value and impact in my organization using Amazon S3 Glacier.

You need a PhD to understand their pricing model. We often sit through meetings, going through all of these documents from AWS, going through how to calculate pricing based on so many different factors. At the end of it, there's a fear when the bill comes in because nobody understands how much it's gonna be.

AWS has these pricing calculators. You type in which server you want and how much usage, but at the end, you don't feel confident when it says $3.98 because I know that we were paying £20,000 per month for AWS services at one point. Some of the other services are RedShift and something else. When pulling in data for the police for ANPR, storing the data in the UK data center costs a fortune.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Amazon S3 Glacier a ten out of ten.

Two bits of advice: make sure you get a specialist with things like security, such as network security. The security is indirect with AWS. You could get an expert in Python using Lambda, but it doesn't make you a network security person. Once you've got a million pounds worth of business data in Amazon, you could potentially share that with the planet if you don't know how to set up the security. Get the relevant technical specialist for things like security.

The second bit of advice is to completely understand the pricing structure.

A cost-effective solution to reduce storage and cost footprint

What is our primary use case?

We use Amazon S3 Glacier for several purposes. We have buckets for our pipelines, software repository, timesheets, and performance data. As per state regulations, we must retain this data for eight years. So to comply with these regulations, we have set up a lifecycle policy in S3 that moves the data to Glacier after five years. This means the data will be stored in Glacier for the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth years. We can retrieve the data from Glacier if we need to access it during this time. Beyond five years, the data will remain in Glacier for three years.

How has it helped my organization?

The main advantage of Glacier is its low cost. It is incredibly cheaper than other storage options, especially for objects you don't access frequently. Glacier would add value if you have a staging area for objects you only need to access occasionally. Since we have data in terabytes between S3 buckets, we can significantly reduce our storage and cost footprint by using Glacier.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Glacier is that it automatically processes archives. Glacier's performance is also very good. We initially thought retrieving objects from Glacier would be difficult but easy and quick.

What needs improvement?

Technical support needs improvement. Previously, even though we had premium and enterprise support, the response time would be quicker if we ran into issues, but now it is slowed down.

The analytical dashboard feature, like the CloudOps dashboard, should be included in the next release of the Amazon S3 Glacier.

If you plan to store your documents for over three years, I recommend using Amazon Glacier S3 to the fullest extent possible. This is because the longer you store your data in the tool, the more you pay. By moving most of your objects to Glacier, you can save money. Additionally, you can use Reserved Capacity to save even more money. Retrieving data from Amazon S3 Glacier is relatively easy. It is easier than retrieving data from the tool. So, I think people should use the product as much as possible.

You need a strategic approach. You also need to consider the technical abilities of the person utilizing the platform to fully understand it. 

Some things are learned as you use the platform. You need to consider what you want to store, how long you will store it, and its usefulness. You need to have a proper storage plan. While understanding the platform is crucial, you must also understand the business side because you must pay for the licenses and storage you use. It's about balancing the technical and business aspects of the tool.

Despite the speed limitations, the Amazon S3 Glacier performs well. As long as you have a network and store your data within your region, the data centers within EMA are quite responsive regarding data retrieval.
