Saves time, is relatively cheap, and helps find errors
Pros and Cons
  • "It is a very scalable solution."
  • "I do not have any notes in terms of improvements."

What is our primary use case?

It's basically like a cloud stack.

You can trace your entire HTTP request. Once you have submitted any request, it will be addressed as a 500 Error or 401 Error, or if there is any exception happening when this request, and how much time will take. X-Ray can trace all the information about the request and response.

Wherever we require any API for any logging purpose, we use AWS X-Ray in our code.

How has it helped my organization?

By using AWS X-Ray, we know which risk takes how many milliseconds. For example, if there is a request during user onboarding, such as uploading documentation that takes three seconds to pass verification, we can do the analytics and divide the action into the sub milliseconds, for example, document verification takes this long, submit form takes that long, et cetera.

What is most valuable?

If we get any error, we can go to X-Ray and get all the requests for a certain error in one place. It makes it easy to find the issue in your own product. You can look at logs and error logs and find loopholes. You can do direct queries to get specific requests over the course of a day. It's very good at error reporting and quite fast.  You also get a lot of information, including IP addresses, user locations, et cetera.

What needs improvement?

Right now, the solution works quite well. I do not have any notes in terms of improvements.

For how long have I used the solution?

I'm working with AWS X-Ray in my current project. I've used it for the last seven or eight months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I haven't found any stability issues. There are no bugs or glitches, and it doesn't crash or freeze. I'd rate it ten out of ten. It is reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a very scalable solution. I'd rate it ten out of ten in terms of ease of scaling. It also has a lot of other features as well that make it even more expansive in terms of use cases.

How are customer service and support?

I've never used technical support. I've never needed their help.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we added all the logs manually in AWS CloudWatch. Doing it that way, it's very hard to find any errors and to report. When we did find errors, we would send emails. Sometimes, they would not be received. We weren't getting to the actual issue efficiently.

Now, with AWS X-Ray, we can directly go to the AWS X-Ray dashboard, and we can file a query and get all error requests. It's much faster and more efficient.

How was the initial setup?

I would rate the initial setup seven out of ten. With a bit of study and with the help of documentation, it's doable.

It's very fast to deploy. You can handle the process within a matter of minutes.

Usually, you just need to do some configuration in AWS CloudFormation, and then there is some line of code you need to add to your project.

You only need one person for the deployment and maintenance of the solution.

What about the implementation team?

We didn't need to use any third parties when setting up the solution. We did it ourselves. It is purely connected with AWS services.

What was our ROI?

I've never investigated ROI for the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Companies are charged based on use.

The pricing is okay. I'd rate the affordability seven or eight out of ten.

It's relatively cheap.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not consider other options previously.

What other advice do I have?

We are customers.

You can always get the latest version from AWS.

This solution was only recently launched by AWS and is already a very good technology. If we implement it nicely in our product, then we can use a lot of features. I'd advise others to try it. It will be really helpful to developers that need to reduce the time and effort in terms of finding issues.

I'd rate the solution ten out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Has a smooth integration process, but it is expensive
Pros and Cons
  • "AWS X-Ray is a strong solution and has a smooth integration process."
  • "They can improve how traces are sent to other providers."

What is our primary use case?

The solution is used to trace dashboard databases and also as a new layer for Codesphere.

What is most valuable?

AWS X-Ray is a strong solution and has a smooth integration process.

What needs improvement?

They can improve how traces are sent to other providers.

How are customer service and support?

The support is good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is a bit expensive.

What other advice do I have?

We need it to make a transformation based on the external products. I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Scalable and good for tracing problems, but hard to configure
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution has made it easier for us to trace the problems that we have with our requests and to monitor the timing of each step in each request we do in our endpoints."
  • "The user interface is sometimes kind of confusing to understand. It's not very user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

In our company, we work with microservices. We use X-Ray to trace the flow of our endpoints and our requests. That's basically the only use case for us.

What is most valuable?

The solution has made it easier for us to trace the problems that we have with our requests and to monitor the timing of each step in each request we do in our endpoints.

The solution does allow for various configurations.

The initials setup is pretty straightforward.

We've found the stability t be quite good.

What needs improvement?

The user interface is sometimes kind of confusing to understand. It's not very user-friendly. They should work to improve this aspect of the product. It should be easier to navigate.

While the configuration is not that difficult and you can follow the instructions in the AWS documentation, it's also not so easy to understand what exactly you have to do to configure everything. For example, in our applications, sometimes it's not clear the points I have to direct the interceptors to have the perfect trace of the endpoint. In fact, right now I'm working on a ticket here to solve a problem where the interceptor break is interrupted at a certain point due to a problem of configuration.

Between local services and AWS services, I'm working with tasks. These tasks use threads, and they are kind of getting lost due to the threads. In these cases, the configuration is a little bit difficult to understand in terms of what to do.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been dealing with the solution for under a year. It's been about six months or so.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good. It doesn't crash or freeze. There aren't bugs or glitches. It's mostly reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We don't have problems with scalability. When we have to scale our applications, we can do so. Other companies would be able to do so as well.

The entire company uses the application. We did a job last year, at the beginning of 2020, to include X-Ray in all applications we have. Therefore, I can say that all the company uses the application. That's at least 600 people, if not more.

How are customer service and technical support?

I've never specifically contacted technical support. I can't speak to their kowledgability or responsiveness.

AWS in general does have good support. I've used them for other issues and they were fine.

How was the initial setup?

The initial is not that difficult. It's fairly straightforward for the most part. The problem is when the system starts to become more complex. It's a little bit hard to figure out where exactly to do to have the perfect, solid application.

Everybody working with back-end development, including DevOps, works on maintaining X-Ray.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't have any information in regards to licensing. I'm not on the DevOps team and typically they are the ones that handle it. It's not an aspect of the solution I'm familiar with.

What other advice do I have?

We have or applications with Amazon. We have an enterprise relationship.

We use the up-to-date version of the solution.

I would recommend the solution. Despite all the difficulties we have faced in terms of configuration, it's very useful to trace everything and to have information about the application types we have in our endpoints. Overall it's a nice tool. Potentially, I just need more time with it to understand more of its functionalities and quirks.

I would rate the solution at a seven out of ten.
