We use it to backup some high output critical physical servers, knowing that in case of disaster we could still recover to our VM environment. The user interface needs improvement.
The user interface needs improvement, the selection boxes to select a backup job are very small not adequate for managing 400+ backup jobs, we only see 8 job names in the small scroll window. The scheduler features are lacking, we must edit backup specs to reach the option to change the schedule. The new reporting feature has greatly improved the product, prior to this it was very difficult to have a full view of our backup schedules when scheduling a new job. Since the move from Syncsort to Catalogic, the quality control of upgrades has diminished and backups that used to work could not be restored without contacting Catalogic for a fix. We still see a lot of value in the product, but hope that the next few updates will not cause more issues... We wanted a mission critical enterprise solution, and sincerely hope that the future upgrades will bring the product back on track.

Backup coverage has supported immutable protection and now needs a more modern, intuitive interface
IBM Storage Protect is from a previous generation of backup software. In those days, backup software was complex in setting up and complex to manage. The new software, such as Rubrik, is very easy to use and more relatable to younger engineers because its interface design is more similar to Office 365 and the newer controls and labels that we are accustomed to. The difficulty that we now have with IBM Storage Protect is that for this day and age, compared to other products that are out there, it seems complex. If we look back 15 years ago, all enterprise class backup software was complex, so IBM was not any different. However, many of these older systems, such as Commvault, still have the same complaint that they are very complex because they have tried to keep that same interface and the same way it works. This suits them, but it probably needed a complete overhaul to bring it into the ease of use that we have with modern software. However, that upgrade has not been done. IBM Storage Protect has not been upgraded into a modern platform. It still looks a legacy platform.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"By implementing an OVF (docker based) and without any agents on your servers, you’ll get a system which provides you with: Orchestration, Automation DR and Data analytics."
"Catalogic has great features including the ability to P2V from snapvaults, and recently the addition of agent-less backups for Linux."
"We do not lose data. That is why we are using this product and have a backup in place."
"It is perhaps one of the best products on the market, and it does a good job."
"It is a very good and mature enterprise product. Once it is set up and everything is put in, you don't have to manage it. It actually runs automatically by itself."
"For our company, disaster recovery is, of course, the biggest benefit."
"For most of our customers, it is more efficient than most traditional backup solutions."
"Their GUI has improved quite a bit. It's made the solution a lot simpler and less complex."
"The solution has excellent performance overall."
"Regarding technical support, if one has the entire enterprise support, I would rate it a nine out of ten...Stability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten."

Cons

"And hearing about all these awesome posibilities, it kind of struck me that this was only possible with NetApp storage."
"Since the move from Syncsort to Catalogic, the quality control of upgrades has diminished and backups that used to work could not be restored without contacting Catalogic for a fix."
"RTO is a huge gap for us. If we had a disaster scenario and had to recover a bunch of stuff from tape, the RTO would be too long for us."
"It needs some software upgrades to fix some of its current bugs."
"We have been waiting for solutions for approximately one year."
"IBM Spectrum Protect is not a very user-friendly tool."
"The technical support is general. If you need more than that, you need to know someone within IBM on the technical in-depth side."
"Ease of use."
"I would like to advance reporting and analytics for the platform to see how much data is coming into the platform. how much data is expiring everyday, and what tape savings we are getting through reclamation."
"The solution could be more user-friendly and provide better monitoring."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Its licensing is complicated. It goes by CPUs, and it is pretty expensive as well."
"The product is low cost. It is very cool when we design it to using licensing based on post capacity."
"We worked our licensing into a capacity model, which is nice. Now, everything is much simpler to manage from a licensing perspective."
"We have been at our size for a few years. We are not really looking to battle the licensing costs, as this is our primary system."
"Technical support is pretty good. It is doing fine, but you pay for it."
"Regarding retro-compatibility of the product between versions, your data is always available and the ROI is unquestionable."
"One can go with either a PVU licensing model or a capacity based licensing model. Either solution does not block the usage, if over used."
"The license model that they have at IBM, which is due to volume, from a certain volume onward is not the right license model."
