Enables on-premise implementation with powerful data processing capabilities
This is the only solution that is possible to install on-premise. Cloudera provides a hybrid solution that combines compute on cloud or on-premises. It includes all machine learning algorithms in the Spark machine learning library. All functionalities needed for a big data platform and ETL are on the platform, eliminating the need for other tools. It is scalable, ready for vertical scaling, and very powerful, offering numerous functionalities and configurations for generative AI.

Processes query faster through multiple systems simultaneously, but it could support different data types
We use the solution for various tasks, including preparing data marts and generating offers. It helps extract data based on rules from the policy team and provides insights to enhance business operations. We also analyze transactions to target customers and improve business performance The…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"This is the only solution that is possible to install on-premise."
"The most valuable feature is that I can use CDH for almost all use cases across all industries, including the financial sector, public sector, private retailers, and so on."
"The solution is reliable and stable, it fits our requirements."
"In terms of scalability, if you have enough hardware you can scale out. Scalability doesn't have any issues."
"The tool's most interesting features are the distributed file system and unstructured data processing capability. Because we have a lot of unstructured data, like XML and social media logs, these features make it more valuable than the usual data warehousing solutions."
"I don't see any performance issues."
"The main advantage is the storage is less expensive."
"The scalability of Cloudera Distribution for Hadoop is excellent."
"DBAs don’t need to add a partition every month/quarter like with other DBs."
"We are also opening new areas of business and potential new revenue streams using Vertica's analytic functions, most notably geospatial, where we are able to run billions of comparisons of lat/long point locations against polygon and point/radius locations in seconds. "
"Vertica uses advanced Azure technologies to compress raw data using indexing, allowing a large amount of data to be stored with minimal physical space. Advanced algorithms are employed in data compression."
"Its analytics has enabled Pythian's clients to get the business insights as quick as they wanted. Its lower maintenance has also improved the ROI."
"Vertica gives knowledgeable users and DBAs excellent tools for tuning."
"Its projections and encoding are excellent tools for tuning large volumes."
"Initiate on one node, and the RPM propagates automatically to all other nodes. "
"The feature of the product that is most important is the speed. I needed a columnar database, and its speed is what it's built to do, and so that's what really does differentiate Vertica from its competitors."

Cons

"The one thing that we struggled with predominately was support. Because it was relatively new, support was always a big issue and I think it's still a bit of an ongoing concern with the team currently managing it."
"It is quite complicated to configure and install. Integrating the platform into an information system is always a challenge, especially when starting with on-premise implementation."
"There are better solutions out there that have more features than this one."
"The initial setup of Cloudera is difficult."
"The solution is not fit for on-premise distributions."
"Without the big data environment, we cannot store all of this data live. We have billions of records and terabytes of storage to be used. It's not an option actually for us to have a big data environment."
"It is quite complicated to configure and install."
"The performance of some analytics engines provided by Cloudera is not that good."
"Support is an area where it could get better."
"Pricing could be more competitive."
"It's hard to make it slow for a small data volume. For large volumes, it's hard to make it work. It's also hard to make it faster, and to make it scale."
"I would personally like to see extended developer tooling suited to Vertica – think published PowerDesigner SQL dialect support."
"The integration of this solution with ODI could be improved."
"Performance of management of metadata layer (database catalog) needs improvement. We still have to have smaller customers on PostgreSQL; Vertica cannot manage thousands of schemata."
"Suboptimal projection design causes queries to not scale linearly."
"Vertica can improve automation and documentation. Additionally, the solution can be simplified."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I believe we pay for a three-year license."
"Cloudera Distribution for Hadoop is expensive, with support costs involved."
"The solution is expensive."
"The tool is not expensive."
"Cloudera requires a license to use."
"The pricing must be improved."
"When comparing with Oracle Sybase and SQL, it's cheaper. It's not expensive."
"The solution is fairly expensive."
"The pricing and licensing depend on the size of your environment and the zone where you want to implement."
"It's an expensive product"
"The pricing depends on the license model because there are several. It depends on the client, but it's cheaper than other solutions. I think it's cheap for all the functionality and robustness. It's not very expensive to deploy."
"The price of Vertica is less expensive than some competitors, such as Teradata."
"The price is reasonable. We use a pay per license model. Firstly, you need to buy a license. After that, you mainly pay the annual support fee of around 20% or 25%. I think their prices are quite reasonable."
"From a cost perspective, the software is less than most of its competitors."
"The price could be cheaper and it is best to negotiate the price."
"The solution is free and we pay for the storage."
