High availability, scalability, and protection against attacks
Pros and Cons
  • "The main features valued in F5 BIG-IP include high availability, scalability, and protection of applications from attacks."
  • "The support response time could use improvement."

What is our primary use case?

I am using F5 BIG-IP for various modules such as LTM (Local Traffic Manager), ASM (Advanced Security Manager), ABM (Application Policy Manager), and DNS. It helps in achieving scalability and high availability for applications, load balancing traffic, protecting applications from outside attacks, application security management, and DNS solutions for data center communication.

How has it helped my organization?

I have not worked on operational improvements directly since I am part of a partner team. Our role is to implement the solution for companies and then leave. However, F5 BIG-IP has helped achieve high availability, scalability, and protection from attacks.

What is most valuable?

The main features valued in F5 BIG-IP include high availability, scalability, and protection of applications from attacks. These are the primary targets it achieves.

What needs improvement?

The support response time could use improvement. In critical cases, such as in the big environment projects, faster support is needed to address critical issues promptly.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have not specifically worked with other solutions. I know there are others like Citrix and Fortinet that offer similar capabilities.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup varies based on the project requirements. For a medium-sized project, it can be completed in two days. In the case of a cooperative project with the Ministry of Finance, it took around three days.

What about the implementation team?

The deployment is usually done by only one person from our company.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In terms of pricing, F5 BIG-IP is not cheaper compared to other solutions like Fortinet or Citrix. The cost can be high due to its comprehensive modules.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have evaluated other solutions such as Citrix and Fortinet, which provide features like load balancing and ADC.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend F5 BIG-IP based on the specific environment and application protection needs. For example, F5 offers separate products for DDoS attacks. Understanding specific company needs is crucial.

The security is pretty good. It helps protect against DDoS.

The management is very easy.

Overall, it works well and is effective.

The pricing is reasonable.

It is stable.

We can scale the solution.

it is pretty secure. It's a good environment.

What needs improvement?

The costs could always be a bit lower.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for about a year and a half.

It's a very stable, reliable solution. I'd rate the stability ten out of ten. There are no bugs or glitches, and it doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product scales well. I'd rate scalability ten out of ten. It's easy to expand.

How are customer service and support?

While I've never used technical support, the company has reached out to support in the past. Support is managed by a third party. They manage the troubleshooting as well.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did previously use a different Windows solution. F5 is better for bigger companies. I changed solutions when I changed companies.

How was the initial setup?

You do need a team to manage the setup process.

What about the implementation team?

The solution was deployed by the time I got to the company. I'm not sure if there was outside assistance.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

You do need a license to use the solution and do need to renew it periodically if you decide to continue to use it.

While I do not know what the exact price of the solution is, my understanding is that it is pretty cheap.

What other advice do I have?

I'd rate the solution ten out of ten.

Offers load balancing, reverse processing and good stability
Pros and Cons
  • "It's very stable."
  • "There is room for improvement in pricing. It is very pricey."

What is our primary use case?

We use F5 for load balancing, reverse processing, and for web applications.

What needs improvement?

There is room for improvement in pricing. It is very pricey. So we don't have a performance problem at this stage. Because the appliances that we use are not the virtual edition. We know that NGINX started using the virtual edition for containers. But, from a performance perspective, we're happy. And from just the price perspective, it's very expensive.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for ten years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable to a certain extent, but that's why we're starting to look at the virtual deployed editions like NGINX because you have limitations, and it's easier to scale in any environment you have on-prem cloud deployment as well.

How are customer service and support?

What about the implementation team?

Two engineers are required for the deployment of the solution. We also have certain vendors who work with us during the implementation.

What was our ROI?

We saw a return on investment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We need pay for the license. It is an expensive solution.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution an eight out of ten. I would recommend using the solution.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Reasonably priced, feature-rich, with responsive and knowledgeable technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The security features, DDoS mitigation facilities, and SQL configuration are the most valuable aspects of this solution."
  • "CNC (control and command) communication would be beneficial. We would like to have control and command blocking to prevent visiting malicious websites."

What is our primary use case?

For caching purposes, we use F5 BIG-IP DNS.

What is most valuable?

The security features, DDoS mitigation facilities, and SQL configuration are the most valuable aspects of this solution.

The data mitigation is very good.

What needs improvement?

They only have a few sub-vendors, but competition for the reduced-price listing has increased.

This one requires a few more vendors who can join the F5 network.

In my opinion, brand recognition can be increased. I would like them to focus on marketing and brand awareness.

In India, for example, the product is not well known, and it is difficult to find F5 partners or vendors.

It's not widely known.

The weakness is that extensive training is required to hire the people who need to work on the project. Training is only part of it, the other is marketing, where and whom to approach.

I would like them to concentrate on training sessions or educational webinars to educate the users and customers.

We are only trained after we have installed it. The training was provided during the deployment.

The main point is that intelligence will be infused into this panel. The product server is prevented from accessing a malicious server site. CNC (control and command) communication would be beneficial.

We would like to have control and command blocking to prevent visiting malicious websites.

We would like them to have a prevention feature included, to prevent them from visiting these websites.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using F5 BIG-IP DNS for three or four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

F5 BIG-IP DNS is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

F5 BIG-IP DNS is a scalable product.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is quick to respond and knowledgeable.

I would rate the technical support a three or four out of five.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are not using any other products. We are only using F5 BIG-IP DNS.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward.

I would rate the initial setup a three or four out of five.

We have preventive maintenance every six months. We have a team of two people to maintain this solution.

What about the implementation team?

We had assistance from a third-party consultant.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

They are competitively priced.

I would rate the price a four out of five. I don't have any issues with the pricing.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate F5 BIG-IP DNS a nine out of ten.

Rock-solid solution in terms of stability with great tech support
Pros and Cons
  • "F5 BIG-IP DNS has been rock solid in terms of stability for years."
  • "It would be great to see a F5 BIG-IP DNS cloud version. What we within the Australian government are looking at doing is utilizing a secured DNS service much the same as the English GCHQ version of their protected DNS service."

What is our primary use case?

One of our primary use cases for F5 BIG-IP DNS is local traffic management. We also use the LTM module, application services, load balancer, and advanced firewall. F5 BIG-IP DNS is a secure web gateway.

What needs improvement?

It would be great to see a F5 BIG-IP DNS cloud version. What we within the Australian government are looking at doing is utilizing a secured DNS service much the same as the English GCHQ version of their protected DNS service. That's a fully-managed external platform and it's used by multiple government agencies, so we get a better holistic view of all malicious DNS traffic that is occurring.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using F5 BIG-IP DNS for about six years, although we are looking at migrating off to a central government-provided DNS upstream service. We are doing this because we have adopted a cloud-only policy.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

F5 BIG-IP DNS has been rock solid in terms of stability for years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have not had to scale it much as our internal infrastructure was small. We have 1,000 individuals using F5 BIG-IP DNS.

How are customer service and support?

The tech support is always great.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

It took us about six months to get it all bolted down and working as we expected it to. It was relatively simple for us to launch.

What about the implementation team?

We received a bit of external support from F5 – from one of the channel partners here in Western Australia, but it was relatively simple to turn on in-house.

Moreover, once we set it up, the ongoing maintenance turned out to be relatively small.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

One a scale of one to five, with one being expensive and five being adequately priced, I would give this solution a four. However, the solution we are migrating to is free.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate other options because when we picked up the BIG-IP package, we wanted to implement a number of things, and DNS is a bonus blade that we picked up. Therefore, we didn't do a full evaluation because what we were buying for was more like ASM module and the load balancing features out of that BIG-IP box. We just picked up DNS as a subsequent bonus.

What other advice do I have?

On a scale of one to ten, with one being the worst and ten being the best, I would give F5 BIG-IP DNS an eight as a solution overall.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A stable solution that verifies and declines suspicious or malicious traffic
Pros and Cons
  • "F5 BIG-IP DNS is a stable solution."
  • "The solution's initial setup is complex compared to Fortinet."

What is our primary use case?

If the client wants to clarify that they are using the trusted packet and trusted browsing, they can use the DNS load balancing. F5 can provide some DNS service solutions. The client forwards the traffic, and the DNS is verified whether it can be trusted. If it's suspicious or malicious, it will be declined. If the traffic is observed to be trusted, valid, or legitimate, then it can pass.

What is most valuable?

F5 BIG-IP DNS is a stable solution.

What needs improvement?

The solution's initial setup is complex compared to Fortinet.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using F5 BIG-IP DNS for ten years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

F5 BIG-IP DNS is a scalable solution.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's technical support is complex.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I did a POC for Cisco Umbrella on the client side.

What about the implementation team?

You need to connect to the console port, put the management IP, and connect the management IP for the dashboard in the management port. Then, you must go to the laptop and browse the management IP, username, password, and GUI. There is a CLI option also, but most of the configuration is done on the graphical unit. The CLI dependency is very low. For the first configuration, I need to go to the CLI, put the management IP, and connect to the graphical unit.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate F5 BIG-IP DNS an eight out of ten.

A complex yet powerful solution
Pros and Cons
  • "F5 BIG-IP DNS is useful, depending on how you use it."
  • "I would like to see the login facilities improved, as well as more troubleshooting."

What is our primary use case?

We are using the latest version of FS BIG-IP. We use the solution for classic reverse proxy authentication. We have approximately 800 internal staff and 2,000 external customers using the solution.

What is most valuable?

F5 BIG-IP DNS is useful, depending on how you use it. Once you write to it, you can do anything you want from it, making it a very powerful solution.

What needs improvement?

The solution is complicated to use. It is difficult to write to. F5 BIG-IP DNS is powerful but challenging to use.

I would like to see the login facilities improved, as well as more troubleshooting.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with F5 BIG-IP DNS for two and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I have not scaled F5 BIG-IP, it is only a single-box solution.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to using F5 BIG-IP, we used PMG. We switched because PMG was at end of life.

How was the initial setup?

The initial set up of F5 BIG-IP DNS is complex. It took approximately six months to deploy.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the solution through consultants. We are still using the consultants, so we will need to add someone to our team to handle future deployment and maintenance.

What other advice do I have?

Anyone deciding to implement F5 BIG-IP DNS should be aware that it is a complex and powerful product.

I would rate this solution an 8 out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
