It's the primary solution we recommend for clients who need high availability
Pros and Cons
  • "FlexPod is the primary solution we recommend for clients with high-availability server requirements. Our clients find FlexPod's management helpful. You can manage everything via plugins."
  • "As the technology grows, we're looking to upgrade our storage systems to something faster, and we're hoping to improve our servers with next-generation technology. So we want to enhance our server infrastructure and explore server virtualization with VMware. That's the improvement that our clients are demanding."

What is our primary use case?

We've deployed a couple of projects for universities. They have been using FlexPod for a VDI solution as well as their file systems and servers. We usually use cheaper firewalls to secure the solution. We mostly use Cisco, which is higher power as well.

What is most valuable?

FlexPod is the primary solution we recommend for clients with high-availability server requirements. Our clients find FlexPod's management helpful. You can manage everything via plugins.

What needs improvement?

As the technology grows, we're looking to upgrade our storage systems to something faster, and we're hoping to improve our servers with next-generation technology. So we want to enhance our server infrastructure and explore server virtualization with VMware. That's the improvement that our clients are demanding.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been in this business for a few years, but I joined this company five years ago. I've been working with FlexPod since I started at the company. My first task was implementing a storage system using FlexPod for some university clients.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

FlexPod is highly scalable. The advantage FlexPod has over some other solutions is that you can scale independently using multi-servers. If you want the scale up the storage, you can create a number of disks.

How are customer service and support?

We usually provide frontline support for our clients. But if something is beyond our knowledge, we get support from the vendors.

How was the initial setup?

Installing FlexPod isn't complex if you follow the implementation guide that the vendor provides. We partner with major vendors like Cisco, NetApp, and VMware, so we have extensive implementation support to help us with migrating the solution. Our first deployment took about nine weeks. Implementation requires only two or three engineers, and we use a third-party provider for the security part. In total, it's a maximum of five people.

What was our ROI?

The return on investment is very high for FlexPod implementations.

What other advice do I have?

I rate FlexPod eight out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Handles all our server data reliably, it just works
Pros and Cons
    • "If there were going to be any improvements, they should probably be UI improvements, overall. It can get a little kludgy sometimes when trying to figure out what to do."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for our inner data center and with our UCS to handle all our server data, and it's doing pretty well.

How has it helped my organization?

It was in place when I got to this job. Since I've been here, it has just worked, it functions fine. We haven't had any issues with it.

    What is most valuable?

Ease of use: Get it set up and it just works.

    What needs improvement?

If there were going to be any improvements, they should probably be UI improvements, overall. It can get a little kludgy sometimes when trying to figure out what to do. But, other than that, from what I'm using right now, it seems to be okay.

There's a learning curve associated with it.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is pretty good. For us, it just works. It's something we don't have to deal with every day, and that's a plus for us.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Whenever it was initially set up, they had a small goal. Now we're using a lot of the storage in it, so we're looking into some expansion, whether we need to do additional pods. We're in the initial stages, we're still trying to figure out how much data we're going to retain and how big we need to scale it. That's the question that we're trying to answer right now.

How is customer service and technical support?

We have used technical support once or twice, to try to add some functionality into it that we didn't use, and they were pretty good.

    How was the initial setup?

I wasn't involved in the initial setup but I'm involved in the upgrading process. It's okay. I haven't worked with it in the past. I'm trying to get in with it, it's a little confusing and different from what I was doing before. But, so far, it's been okay, just minor bumps in the road.

What other advice do I have?

My top criteria when selecting a vendor are that they are easy to work with and have knowledgeable engineers on the other side. When I have questions, I want to be able to get them answered easily.

Make sure to have FlexPod on the list. If you're looking at HPE or Dell EMC, put NetApp in there and take a look at them.

We were able to get everything up and running very quickly without having to consult with multiple teams across the IT infrastructure

    What is most valuable?

    • The central point of management
    • The centralized management of the storage and the compute

How has it helped my organization?

    • Improved functionality
    • Speeds up deployment time.

The product is uniquely valuable because we were able to get everything up and running very quickly without having to consult with multiple teams across the IT infrastructure.

    What needs improvement?

When we initially installed it, the automation piece really wasn't available. Maybe in a future release, if automation was built into the product that would be good.

For how long have I used the solution?

    Three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    The stability is very good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    The scalability is very good.

How are customer service and technical support?

We used technical support for the initial install. They were good, knowledgeable, and helped us get answers quickly. We were able to reach the right person quickly.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The original project was no longer needed, so we took it apart, and repurposed the components.

    How was the initial setup?

I was involved in the initial setup. I found it to be very easy.

It is easy to manage and their support is streamlined.

    What is most valuable?

The way everything works together. It is all built to do what it's supposed to do. The performance we get out of it is incredible. We just went through a refresh of basically a whole new FlexPod. We decided to stay with that just because of how well everything works and how great the support is.

How has it helped my organization?

The benefit at this point is that we understand it. We know how everything works. If we don't, there's one place where they know how everything works. Support is streamlined. It is absolutely easy to manage. Up until a couple years ago, there was only one person that it took to manage the whole infrastructure.

    What needs improvement?

I really like what it does now. I don't really have any complaints. They plan to give it the ability to add more flash storage in a hybrid shelf. We don't have the need or the capital for an all-flash cache, so we got a hybrid one that's limited to how many flash caches you can have on there.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I haven't had any stability issues with it. I ran into a bug with the software, probably three or four years ago, and this caused deduplication to stop working. However, they resolved that right away and we put the patch on and got back to running it normally.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is great. We added a new shelf to it last year. There wasn't much down time to add the shelf to it and it was actually very simple. The directions that came with it were straightforward.

How is customer service and technical support?

Technical support is great. They're always there whenever we need them. They're willing to jump on, spend as much time with us as we need. It is great that Cisco, NetApp, and VMware can all work together on an issue. If you don't know an answer, just call FlexPod support and they are able to help.

    How was the initial setup?

It was set up before I got there. I remember how to put in the seven node cluster plus the transition that we are doing now. The setup was simple. It came with a single start-up script. They sent us an Excel sheet ahead of time to fill everything out that we needed. We ran through the script, it asked us for everything, we were together, and it was quick.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated EMC and HPE for new storage. We decided to stay with NetApp over HPE and EMC because of our experience with it. We didn't have any bad experiences with it, so we didn't want to change it to go down a new learning path. We knew it, it worked, and we had no issues.

What other advice do I have?

They should definitely look into NetApp, especially now with the SolidFire acquisition. They have almost everything you would need for storage. I've used HPE SANs before and EMC, and NetApp just blows them out of the water with manageability and the price point.

We're able to call a vendor and they can use back channels and reach out to the other two vendors to get us a solution, but the price could be improved.

    Valuable Features

The fact that it’s a validated design, so you are not running into any gotchas.

    Improvements to My Organization

By having a FlexPod we're able to call a vendor and they can use back channels and reach out to other two vendors to get us a solution, instead of each vendor passing the blame from one to another. It's one stop shopping.

    Room for Improvement

    The price.

    Stability Issues

It's very stable, and just runs and runs and runs until you upgrade something.

    Scalability Issues

It's very easy to grow and very simple. There's nothing major to add more chassis and blades, or storage if you need to.

    Customer Service and Technical Support

Their support is dynamite, and it's a lot easier to escalate with NetApp than with VMware. VMware has taken us a lot longer than with NetApp.

    Initial Setup

It’s very complex if you’re new to it, but once you’ve done it its pretty easy.

    Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing

I would like it to be cheaper but other than that nothing to add. As much as I can try to get the price lower, why should I have to negotiate in the first place?

    Other Advice

I would say do it, do it now. Spend the money and buy it, it makes it easy.

There's a cohesive support structure in which NetApp will provide support for a UCS problem.

    Valuable Features

I think that the most valuable features are the integration of the components and the support model.

    Improvements to My Organization

I think the integrated support where, if I call NetApp support and it’s a problem with UCS, the fact that I have a one-stop shop will provide a cohesive support structure for me, and that’s huge.

And it’s not very costly. We acquired the parts of the FlexPod individually.

    Room for Improvement

I’m sure there is room for improvement, there always is, but I’m hard-pressed to tell you what could be improved.

    Stability Issues

    It's rock solid.

    Scalability Issues

We haven’t had the need to grow it, but based on how scalable I know the three vendors are, I don’t see any issues.

    Customer Service and Technical Support

It’s been excellent – they are very responsive. Traditionally, when you have multiple vendors, before FlexPod, everyone does a lot of finger pointing, and the fact that all these companies work together is invaluable. This makes my life as a customer much easier.

    Initial Setup

We did it piecemeal, but it was very easy.

    Other Advice

I would say, what are you waiting for?

It allows compatibility to the SnapDrive manager, and while we haven't had stability issues yet, we're still early in its usage.

    Valuable Features

I would say that it gives us more flexibility than an entire VM or bare metal solution. Its sole purpose where it mixes everything together allows compatibility to the SnapDrive manager.

    Room for Improvement

Nothing I have seen can be improved, but I think we're still early in the usage.

    Deployment Issues

We designed it about a year ago and have had it about six months.

    Stability Issues

    It seems great so far.

    Scalability Issues

So far we have not had to expand it, but are expanding shortly so we will find out.

    Customer Service and Technical Support

I haven’t had to use them so far, but my colleagues who have used support have been happy so far.

    Initial Setup

    It was straightforward.

    Implementation Team

Our vendor did it for us.

    Other Advice

I would say that it seems to be the way to go in our environment. We're looking into it for new aspects as well but well see.

The fact that everything is certified together means we don’t have to do much, although initial setup seems to be complex because we have UCS in place and are adding a NetApp cluster.

    What is most valuable?

I think the most valuable features are the architecture and the support from Cisco and NetApp. The fact that everything is certified together means we don’t have to do much.

    What needs improvement?

At this point, it's doing everything we’ve asked.

For how long have I used the solution?

    We’re still implementing it.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It seems to be very stable. We’re kind of early on, just started the integration, but so far so good as it's more stable than our old platform, IBM.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We’re a fairly small shop so it will scale beyond what we need for it.

How are customer service and technical support?

The solution is verified so there is less explaining that needs to be done. Depends on what the issue is, but they will be more versed to handle those questions.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

    Our old platform was IBM.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup seems like it will be kind of complex because we have the UCS in place, and are adding a NetApp cluster. It would have been simpler if we were doing a full refresh instead of piecemeal.

What other advice do I have?

It's worth evaluating. Having the certified architecture certainly helps when it comes to design and testing.
