Complete solution that provides DNS, DHCP, and IPAM without using different standalone servers

What is our primary use case?

DDI stands for DNS, DHCP, and IPAM, so it's a complete solution that provides these three services without using different standalone servers for each one. It's perfect for any enterprise that wants a complete solution. We're working with a specific customer that needs their own servers without relying on an operator.

The solution is deployed on-premises. There are about 30 engineers using this solution in my organization.

How has it helped my organization?

By allocating IP addresses for each new site 

Allocate dhcp servers based on the standard you set per the organization 

Fail over between DHCP servers can be maintained automatically and errors can be triggered in a fast paced manner 

Allowing sites to communicate to different services 

URL resolution and domain name sets 

Different types of records can be maintained for uses 

What is most valuable?

The best feature is the user interface. It's easy to arrange and choose the right block for your organization and how many IPs you want. You can assign ranges and records for specific services.

What needs improvement?

They need to provide more training and tutorials than what's provided on the website. The website has a free tutorial for users, but it's very simple. They need to provide training for advanced topics for the DDI and especially for DNS.

I have used this solution for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's a scalable product. The servers can be adjusted according to the solution and design that is being used.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is excellent. We contact them when we upgrade the software or replace devices. For specific questions regarding DDI itself, we request technical support.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution as eight out of ten. The stability is good. It's not a 10 because the software and servers can be slow. When we have some issues, the tech response isn't as fast as it should be, but we haven't opened many cases.

For those who want to use this solution, my advice is to know the size of your business. Do you want to have an on-premises or on-cloud service? Do you want to apply this individually to your own servers, services, and records? 

For large enterprises with more customers and with many branches around the world, they are entitled to have their own servers or to rely on a service operator. It's important to consider the number of operations, future expansions, and the current design of the network. The engineering team should ask themselves about what kind of expansion they will have in the next five years.

What is most valuable?

Infoblox has more technology patents than any of its competitors. It automatically has the functionalities, features, and detection level that nobody else can achieve, even competitors like Cisco Umbrella, EfficientIP, and many others. There is also a huge gap in the threat intelligence Infoblox provides. It offers more than double the IOCs their second-level competition offers. The solution is also easy to use.

What needs improvement?

They need to reconsider their pricing for their SMB customers. It is a hurdle for them to manage the price.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've worked with Infoblox DDI for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I am satisfied with Infoblox's stability.

How are customer service and support?

Infoblox's support team has received good feedback.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is easy to implement.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is a bit expensive for SMB customers. Infoblox's subscription includes support.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend the solution for SMBs and enterprises. I rate the product a nine or ten out of ten.

What is our primary use case?

The solution offers everything from basic management to automation in DevOps and includes the blocks and solutions they have.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution has provided us with major scalability capabilities. We can automate a lot of things within Infoblox. The API is so robust and easy to use - plus, it can integrate with most of the solutions we already have. Its automation and general capabilities have been really good.

What is most valuable?

The IPAM itself and the discovery capabilities are the reason we bought the solution.

The product is an industry leader. It's a great DDI solution. 

It offers an easy initial setup.

The solution can scale. 

Technical support is helpful.

What needs improvement?

There aren't really any outstanding flaws I've taken note of. It works quite well. There might be small changes here and there. However, I can't recall specific details at this time. 

The solution is expensive.

I've been using the solution for the past four years. 

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is perfect. There are no bugs or glitches, and it doesn't crash or freeze. 

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is pretty good. I would rate it eight out of ten. It's very scalable. 

A few thousand people are using the solution at this time. 

I'm not sure if there are plans to increase usage just yet.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support has been great overall. They are helpful and responsive, and we are pleased with the level of assistance we get.

How was the initial setup?

The solution is straightforward and simple to set up. It's not overly complex or difficult. 

Setting up the entire grid took almost a month. However, it depends on how big the environment is and how cooperative other networks and teams are.

For maintenance, that again depends on how big the environment is. For example, if it's 100 plus, then ten people are needed for day-to-day operations. It's not about Infoblox, it's about how active your environment is and how often you want to make some changes.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the initial setup in-house. We dd not need outside assistance. 

What was our ROI?

We have witnessed an ROI using this product.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't directly deal with licensing. I can't speak to the exact cost of the solution. My understanding is that, in the current market, it's a bit expensive. 

If cost is a big deal, then people go to BlueCat. Otherwise, if they want the best solution, then people go to Infoblox.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I wasn't a part of the evaluation process. Another team made the decision. They may have looked into different options. 

What other advice do I have?

We have a hybrid setup, with some on the cloud and some on-premises. We're actually moving from on-prem to the cloud at this point. 

I'd advise potential users to just go for it, however, to make sure they have the money. 

For a DDI solution, this one is perfect. I'd rate it ten out of ten.

Offers efficient and streamlined management of the DHCP server

    What is our primary use case?

    The purpose of this solution is to work with different main services already existing on the customer side, such as Microsoft's DHCP server and DNS server. While these services are mostly covered by Microsoft, Infoblox addresses the limitations and improves them significantly. For example, working with the DHCP server is more efficient and easier with Infoblox. 

    Similarly, managing DNS services is much better in Infoblox compared to Microsoft. Infoblox excels in resolving DNS queries quickly and efficiently, and its management capabilities are superior. Infoblox focuses on DNS security, which is their main area of expertise. They want to host the DNS server in their system to enhance and secure DNS operations. 

    This is their competitive advantage in the market—providing superior DNS security and management capabilities, not just managing security but also securing and controlling DNS records.

    What is most valuable?

    Infoblox excels in managing DNS, DHCP, and IP addresses. Additionally, they prioritize DNS security, which is crucial for the security department. 

    While DNS, DHCP, and IP address management are typically handled by the networking or systems department, Infoblox provides advanced security features that cater to the security department's needs as well.

    What needs improvement?

    There is some room for improvement in setup and the pricing model. 

    For how long have I used the solution?

    We recently started again this year with Infoblox for our customers. I worked with it in 2016-2017, when I handled the technical part. Now I have shifted to sales and solution architecture.

    What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    Infoblox DDI is a stable solution. There was one product, Advanced DNS Protection, that was recently mentioned. It is another solution from Infoblox. About five years ago, there were some stability issues, especially with the hardware version. 

    Whether it was hardware or a virtual appliance, the hardware version was not stable. However, they have made significant improvements and resolved many hardware issues. Currently, we are only selling the DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) product. So, I haven't encountered many cases where stability became a concern as they have addressed the hardware issues.

    So far, based on the product we have installed for our customers, I would rate it a nine out of ten. But it also depends on the specific product implementation. Since we primarily sell the virtual solution, which integrates well with the customer's virtualization system, it provides added stability.

    What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

    Infoblox DDI is a scalable solution. It's a scalable solution in general. I would rate the scalability an eight of ten. 

    How are customer service and support?

    In the past five to six years, Infoblox DDI's technical support has been average. However, I can't comment on their current support as we haven't needed to contact them for technical assistance. We have been relying on their professional service support during the implementation phase. The professional service team has been responsive and quick in addressing our queries. But I can't provide a definitive answer on their technical support as we haven't yet opened a support case with Infoblox.

    We are using support from a third-party provider, not directly from Infoblox. Infoblox does provide its own support. What I meant was that during the ongoing implementation phase, we are primarily relying on the professional service support from Infoblox. 

    We haven't transitioned to their regular technical support yet, as the professional service team is still involved in the project. So, once the professional service is done with the implementation, we will switch to Infoblox's regular technical support.

    How was the initial setup?

    Setting it up is not easy. It's not difficult, either. It requires certain configurations to be done, but once the admin understands how it's done, it will be easy to deal with. But it does take some time to become familiar with it in general.

    What about the implementation team?

    Infoblox DDI can be deployed on the cloud or on-premises, or if you want, even in organizations that don't have a window for the internet.

    Deployment time depends. If it's a fresh installation, it won't take much time. But mostly in Infoblox DDI, the implementation includes migration, which can be a tough part, especially when migrating from Microsoft to Infoblox. It requires a dedicated tool from them to migrate the DNS server and DSCB from Microsoft. So that's the main challenge. But if you start from scratch, it will take not much time.

    Additionally, if the customer doesn't have a DNS server from Microsoft, it's easier. So, if they focus on resolving integration troubles, that would make Infoblox a better solution.

    In general, integration with third-party vendors has become complex now because they use custom APIs. So integration with other third parties is not a big deal now.

    What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

    I would say the pricing falls between average and expensive. It's not a cheap product. 

    I would rate it as an eight out of ten, with one being a low price and ten being a high price. 

    There are some additional actions that may incur additional costs. For example, one of the additional costs is the Enterprise Reporter license. It is an additional license required for reporting purposes. Infoblox DDI itself doesn't include reporting capabilities, so a dedicated solution is needed, which requires an additional license.

    There are many features that were previously added one by one. For any single feature, an additional license was required. But now, since they have switched to a subscription-based model, you can get a lot of services and features in one license. So there's no need to add an additional license. It's less complicated now. That's the only thing I remember from the enterprise reports or reports enterprise that remains the same. 

    What other advice do I have?

    I really recommend this type of solution because I'm sure most of our customers are using Microsoft DSCB and DNS, but there is no security for that because Microsoft doesn't have this type of security solution. 

    We are really focused on the security part, especially the DNS security part because there are a lot of attacks using DNS nowadays.  Infoblox DDI is working hard on the end of security. So, I don't believe Microsoft can provide this. Therefore, I highly recommend people use solutions like Infoblox.

    Overall, I would rate the solution an eight out of ten.
