It performs well with large files
Pros and Cons
  • "The most important reason we use Azure Block Storage is the ability to store large files. When we were building the solution, we knew we needed to store images and video files that are 100 MBs or more. The second thing is speed when dealing with such large file sizes."
  • "There should be a discount on Block Storage for people who use it more often."

What is our primary use case?

We deployed our website on Azure, and Block Storage is for storing large objects. We use Azure Block Storage for embedded videos that any person coming on the website needs to use.

What is most valuable?

The most important reason we use Azure Block Storage is the ability to store large files. When we were building the solution, we knew we needed to store images and video files that are 100 MBs or more. The second thing is speed when dealing with such large file sizes.

What needs improvement?

It would be nice if the Azure Block Storage could integrate with microservices-based mobile apps, too.

For how long have I used the solution?

We started using Azure Block Storage for a project two or three weeks ago.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Block Storage is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I can't say much about scalability because these are small projects, so it's not like we've utilized Block Storage for a million users. We only have a few hundred users.

How was the initial setup?

The setup process is pretty straightforward.  The documentation from Microsoft is clear enough for anyone to set up a storage account. Two or three people are enough to maintain the solution we've built. It's a stable solution that more or less works on its own.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There should be a discount on Block Storage for people who use it more often. Right now we pay somewhere around maybe 30,000 rupees monthly.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Most of our solutions are built on Azure, so that is our first choice. However, we also considered AWS Storage Services. We thought about using the AWS S3 bucket, but our in-house team mostly has experience on Azure, we stuck with that. I think the Azure documentation is easier to understand than AWS's, so that's the main advantage. The costs are more or less the same.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Azure Block Storage eight out of 10. My biggest concern is the pricing.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Great storage, easy to set up, and offers good documentation
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is stable."
  • "They could create more readability of files."

What is most valuable?

Of all the features I have used, it works great. While some require development, you don't need to for all of them.

There are various types of storage to choose from - blob, table, and queue.

The initial setup is simple.

It has great documentation and community support.

What needs improvement?

When I installed Azure Explorer on my system, I connected easily, and, for uploading data and uploading any value or any files from there, it was very easy. However, when it's there in Azure Blob, Azure Portal, then uploading, downloading, or viewing the file is a little bit difficult. That's the part they need to improve. Downloading and uploading could be easier.

They could create more readability of files. We can use other solutions in desktop versions and then we can connect those Azure files. However, if anyone is working maybe in Linux or other things, then the Azure Portal is best for them. The readability is easier.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working on the solution for more than 12 months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's like creating normal Windows files. Each time you have to create a file though, you can create it using CLI. However, if it's only a storage file and you can store large amounts, large volumes, of details. Scaling is simple. I have not had any challenge regarding Blob Storage, as I do not have much data actually. I haven't used it on a large scale. That's why I don't find any scalability challenges myself, actually.

How are customer service and support?

While we have Microsoft technical support, I didn't take any Microsoft technical support yet, as their documentation is enough for me. If I get into any problems, I look for solution documentation or community help. That's enough for me.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very simple and straightforward. It's not difficult.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I haven't compared the solution to any other solutions just yet. We only deal with Azure.

What other advice do I have?

I'm an end-user. I'd recommend this solution to others. I would rate it as eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

Reliable with good storage capabilities and easy uploading
Pros and Cons
  • "The stability seems to be very reliable."
  • "The storage is great, it's easy to upload files, the stability seems to be very reliable, it's a very scalable solution, and I like the storage explorer feature."
  • "If the documentation could be improved then it would be very good. Right now, if you face a question, you have to guess how it works or you have to test your hypothesis."
  • "If the documentation could be improved then it would be very good. Right now, if you face a question, you have to guess how it works or you have to test your hypothesis."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for storage.

What is most valuable?

The storage is great. It's easy to upload files.

The stability seems to be very reliable.

It's a very scalable solution.

I like the storage explorer feature.

What needs improvement?

I cannot recall coming across any missing features.

I have experience in resolving various issues, however, troubleshooting can be sometimes very difficult as items are not very well documented. If the documentation could be improved then it would be very good. Right now, if you face a question, you have to guess how it works or you have to test your hypothesis. This would be great for newer, more basic users.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have explored the solution several times in the past and have used it maybe for almost a year. I work with it almost on a daily basis.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have never had any issues with eh stability. I've never dealt with bugs or glitches and it doesn't crash or freeze. It's stable and reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution scales well. If a company wants to expand it, it can do so. It's not a problem.

How are customer service and support?

I've never directly dealt with technical support. I can't comment on how helpful they would be if issues came up.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with Databricks and I'd not say that there isn't much of a difference. I tend to prefer Azure as everything is under one umbrella.

How was the initial setup?

The solution was not deployed by me directly.

What other advice do I have?

I'm just an end-user. I don't have any special arrangements with the company.

I would rate the solution a ten out of ten. I haven't had any issues with it at all.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

It is easy to use and has significantly reduced our costs
Pros and Cons
  • "The tier feature in V2 is the most valuable feature of this solution. It enables you to move your storage from hot tier to cold tier into archive tier."
  • "It has improved my organization by reducing costs by 90%."
  • "We don't delete the other tools from the folder directly. There's no folder deletion option in Azure Block Storage. It would be nice if they could update this."
  • "There is a folder inside the block storage. I am not able to delete the folder completely from the portal. I need to go delete the file inside and then I will be able to delete the folders."

What is our primary use case?

We use it as a storage backend for our analytical use cases and we do modeling in the Azure Databricks environment. We store huge chunks of data in terms of terabytes. We use this data to gain insights into our modeling platform. We find it cheaper than storing it on-premise. And it does not require infrastructure maintenance.

How has it helped my organization?

It has improved my organization by reducing costs by 90%. There's still no infrastructure engineering involved for the maintenance and it's easy to use.

What is most valuable?

The tier feature in V2 is the most valuable feature of this solution. It enables you to move your storage from hot tier to cold tier into archive tier.

That is one of the features I liked it better than a version V1 because V1did not have this feature.version. Because of it, we can save costs on storage.

What needs improvement?

There is a folder inside the block storage. I am not able to delete the folder completely from the portal. I need to go delete the file inside and then I will be able to delete the folders.

We don't delete the other tools from the folder directly. There's no folder deletion option in Azure Block Storage. It would be nice if they could update this.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Azure Block Storage for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We haven't had any problems with stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's a pretty simple solution and it scales up automatically when the data size goes up. It scales up and the costs increase accordingly.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. We did the deployment ourselves. They have good online documentation.  Producing the storage account took about 10 minutes max. The overall configuration took maybe 10 minutes. To make it work properly took around one hour.

It only took one person to deploy it.

Most of the users use it as the default storage. We have close to 1,000 users using this solution.

It requires one person per team to maintain it. so maybe one person per team, it would be a maximum of a hundred people.

It's used across the organization by the technology team and the data science team. We're not looking to expand the usage because I feel that at least this part of the solution has reached the desired audience.

What was our ROI?

Our ROI is that it has reduced our costs by 90%.

The amount for storage we used to pay $1,000 per month, now we only pay around $10.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

For the first 50DB, they cost around $50.

It's an open solution for everybody. Anybody can go to the Microsoft website and they can get the pricing for it. But the first 50GB of data is a default rate and then it increases for the next 500GB or something like that.

It is a pay as you go solution. The more you use, the more you pay. That's normally how you pay for any cloud solutions.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We also evaluated Amazon, AWS, Microsoft, and Google cloud.

What other advice do I have?

You will need high-speed bandwidth internet and a contact center for Microsoft for billing purposes. It is kind of a drag and drop and it is pretty simple to use. There is a small learning curve.

If you create a folder at least one sample file has to be there. So sometimes it becomes irrelevant because unnecessarily I put a normal dummy file. And then from tomorrow onwards when the data starts doing it I delete the dummy file when the actual data is there. I find that pretty cumbersome. In the next release, I would like for them to update this.

The biggest lesson I have learned from using this solution is that Microsoft solutions are easy to use.

I would rate it a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

High-speed data solution that supports multiple types of deployment
Pros and Cons
  • "It can be deployed independently and supports every kind of deployment."
  • "It is also costly and not cheap compared to Internet-based networks."

What is our primary use case?

We use it for high-speed data and a very critical mission.

What is most valuable?

Block storage is typically used when you have structured data. For example, RDP systems like SQL Oracle and the SQL DB tool. If you have structured data, you need Microsoft Azure Block Storage.

What needs improvement?

The solution should also support unstructured data. There is a different file format for unstructured data. It would also be good if the solution notification features.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for three years. Microsoft Azure Block Storage is deployed as per the requirement. It can be deployed independently and supports every kind of deployment.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is very stable, and I rate the stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable, and I rate the scalability an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is very good.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is not as simple as File Storage, and it requires a lot of investment because block storage requires a high-speed network, and you have to deploy a lot of fibre cables. It is also costly and not cheap compared to Internet-based networks. So the initial investment cost for deploying the block storage is very expensive.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price depends on the requirement. If the data is critical, you must deploy block storage. But if it is not that critical, you can choose cheaper storage options. I rate the pricing for Microsoft Azure Block Storage a two out of ten.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Multiple vendors offer good block storage solutions, such as BMC Storage, NetApp Storage, Azure, Google and Oracle. Microsoft Azure Block Storage is deployed for mission-critical and business-critical data. When deploying these kinds of data, you must have a data center to control moving the data and allow multiple storages. You can know where the data is stored, which software controls the data, and who manages your data. But for cloud, the customer does not have any visibility or know who is responsible for managing data or whether it's secured. Therefore, transparency, control and storage deployment is significant.

What other advice do I have?

I rate this solution an eight out of ten, and I would recommend this to others.
