Good storage flexibility and linear scalability, but high relative cost
Pros and Cons
  • "The features that I have found most valuable are its storage flexibility, linear scalability, and perhaps ease of use and powerful support."
  • "The cost is a negative aspect."

What is our primary use case?

Our main activities with Nutanix Prism are server and desktop virtualization.

What is most valuable?

The features that I have found most valuable are its storage flexibility, linear scalability, and perhaps ease of use and powerful support.

What needs improvement?

In terms of what could be improved or simplified, they have an active software as a business continuity using Acropolis Hypervisor with the Syncro Disaster recovery, and they have made a good improvement with live upgrade with the LCM, but I would say there should be additional improvements on the live upgrade.

In the next release, I think it should have the integration monitor from a server component because I have some issues with the integration with the third party monitoring tool. I would also like to see additional improvements in the dashboard.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nutanix Prism for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Yes, it is stable, but there is a good support team in case of a problem.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is a one click deployment. 70% of the time I did the setup I made the automatic discovery installation field and the majority of times I did a manual installation. The automatic installation is quick, but the majority of times I did it I needed to swap it from automatic to manual which required a lot of additional activities. They have good support, but it was a time consuming activity.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We are also working with competing products - VMware VxRail and Sangfor which is a Chinese product, which is much cheaper because of its poor market share. It was a product with less experience and less functionality, but it was much cheaper. So Nutanix costs a lot, but it has ease of use, ease due to having a lot of the market share, has a lot of features, and has continuous improvement, but the cost is a negative aspect.

What other advice do I have?

On a scale of one to ten, I would rate Nutanix Prism a seven. It can be improved.

Sufficient for everyday operations, perfect support, and good for dynamic infrastructures
Pros and Cons
  • "I like the general usability for general configuration. It is sufficient for everyday operations."
  • "The life cycle management or LCM feature is the most complicated. It takes really long and is unpredictable for our use cases. They should provide more detailed information about the kind of LCM to go for, various errors, and different kinds of tasks. For analytics for certain configurations, we require more details with the report. Sometimes, not all elements are present for support, management, and configuration. For troubleshooting, it would be very easy and useful if we can analyze log files directly from Prism, that is, not from the command line but directly from Prism."

What is our primary use case?

We manage the basic infrastructure with Prism and Prism Control.

What is most valuable?

I like the general usability for general configuration. It is sufficient for everyday operations.

What needs improvement?

The life cycle management or LCM feature is the most complicated. It takes really long and is unpredictable for our use cases. They should provide more detailed information about the kind of LCM to go for, various errors, and different kinds of tasks.

For analytics for certain configurations, we require more details with the report. Sometimes, not all elements are present for support, management, and configuration.

For troubleshooting, it would be very easy and useful if we can analyze log files directly from Prism, that is, not from the command line but directly from Prism.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their technical support is perfect. They provide very fast answers to every problem. The solution is generally provided on the same day.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

When compared with VMware, it is an overpriced solution for basic features, but for a highly complex project, its price very adequate.

What other advice do I have?

It is a very complex solution with many different functionalities. Prism Element is for enterprises of any size. In Prism Pro or Prism Ultimate, the functionality is a bit locked to the company size and the IT infrastructure size. You don't always need a very big installation for a big business. I would advise others to use Prism Central because Prism Element does not have all the required management features that Prism Central has.

I would recommend this solution for all organizations planning to build infrastructure for any size and change. It is easy for changes in size or functionality.

I would rate Nutanix Prism a nine out of ten.

Good support, competitively-priced, and fast performance
Pros and Cons
  • "Nutanix Prism is very fast compared to VMware and whatever you need to do, you can do it quickly."
  • "Nutanix does not support all of the Linux distributions, so we have to use VMware in some cases."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Nutanix Prism with our Linux systems.

What is most valuable?

Nutanix Prism is very fast compared to VMware and whatever you need to do, you can do it quickly.

What needs improvement?

The only issue with Nutanix is that when you want to take a snapshot, you have to power down and then back up, which creates a short period of downtime. This is a negative point for Nutanix because, in our environment, downtime is not something that we get easily. VMware does not have this issue.

I would like to have more control from Prism so that you can control everything from there, as it does with vCenter.

Nutanix does not support all of the Linux distributions, so we have to use VMware in some cases.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Nutanix for the past two years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There is a limitation when it comes to scalability. We have a lot of tools in our environment so the resources are at about 80% capacity. In order to add more tools, we have to add another node and move the VM into another cluster. This will create downtime. Currently, we have 14 nodes.

How are customer service and technical support?

Nutanix technical support is very good. You just log a call, they respond, and you can easily get support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used VMware for six years but I am now more comfortable with Nutanix. Nutanix Prism is cheaper in price and they are very supportive.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. I would not say that it is tough, or complex, but rather a very easy setup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This product is cheaper than using VMware.

What other advice do I have?

Nowadays, I recommend that people use Nutanix Prism. I have been using Nutanix for two years and feel that it is very good compared to VMware. I spent six years working with VMware and am more comfortable with Nutanix. They are very supportive.

My only complaints about Nutanix are that downtime is required more often and the issue with resource limitations when clustering.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Simple to upgrade, no downtime, and the performance flow charts are excellent
Pros and Cons
  • "The Clone and Snapshot features are two of the most valuable aspects of the solution for our organization. Rather than simply one-click automation the Snapshot and reverse Snapshot are great."
  • "The solution could be a bit more user-friendly. The dashboard and configuration should be much easier to use."

What is most valuable?

Nutanix Prism is awesome. It's a simple upgrade. There is no downtime and all. There is never any worry about upgrading the solution. It's a very good product.

The Clone and Snapshot features are two of the most valuable aspects of the solution for our organization. Rather than simply one-click automation the Snapshot and reverse Snapshot are great.

The performance flow chart is excellent. I can find out about the performance levels and all the metrics are right there for us. If we were to go to VMware we would have to deploy the vrOPs etc. You're able to see the chart and utilization screen and performance monitoring, all those things. So this is good, rather than VMware vSAN technology.

The solution offers good production.

What needs improvement?

The solution could be a bit more user-friendly. The dashboard and configuration should be much easier to use.

The migration from Nutanix to other platforms, like VMware and hypervisor, needs improvement. That is a difficult task right now, because we cannot run the two separately. It's a bit tricky.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using the solution for six to eight months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. It's been quite reliable for us. We haven't had any issues with it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. We don't have any issues with that.

How are customer service and technical support?

We've only had one issue previously and it was a hardware failure. We made a support ticket and they were able to assist.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex. It's quite straightforward.

Deployment took us one day. We were done with the installation quite quickly.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the installation ourselves, along with the assistance of a Nutanix partner engineer.

Nutanix's partner was there at the data center along with us. I went through some Nutanix training as well. This was about five days and by the end, I was well-versed in deployment and other processes. We didn't face any difficulty. We knew how to face configurations and charts, etc.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing this solution we looked avSAN technology and HPE SimpliVity. We were also looking at Dell VxRail as well.

What other advice do I have?

We aren't using the latest version of the solution. It might be the latest minus one. The bank always goes for a minus version and not the latest version because of some compliance-related issues related to bank policies.

I'd recommend the solution. It's quite good. As an alternative, VxRail is also a good option.

I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. I'm very happy with this product. My workload is currently running on production on a Nutanix box, and it is working absolutely fine. There are no issues. It offers good performance and optimization. It's resilient.

Pros and Cons
  • "We can also manage our disaster recovery plan from a single console."
  • "There are no firewall policies."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for the single console and to manage the entire data center. We can create VMs, storage and networks. We can also manage our disaster recovery plan from a single console.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are those used for day-to-day operations, such as creating VMs and configuring storage. For example, it can be used to upgrade the clusters, hardware, and virtualization stack.

What needs improvement?

There are no firewall policies, and they should be added in the next release.

We have been using this solution since 2012. We are using the latest version, and it is cloud-based.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is stable and robust.

The technical support is amazing.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used VMware in the past.

Stable and scalable but difficult to manage
Pros and Cons
  • "Prism is easy to scale."
  • "Prism is not very user-friendly, particularly in its upgrade process, compared to vSAN."

What is our primary use case?

I mainly use Prism for the database file server.

What needs improvement?

Prism is not very user-friendly, particularly in its upgrade process, compared to vSAN. They don't really provide support for long-term services but offer upgrades very frequently, which means we don't always have the time to update to the newest version. Both configuration and manageability are complicated too.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Nutanix Prism for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Prism is stable, but the frequent updates cause interruptions.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Prism is easy to scale.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is fine, we usually get support within the same day as logging an issue. However, they don't make their tech articles easily available, unlike Lenovo or Dell, which makes it harder to solve problems on your own.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was moderate - I would rate it six out of ten. It took three to four days to set up, compared to one or two days for vSAN.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The license for Prism is costlier than other VMs.

What other advice do I have?

I would not recommend Prism and would rate it seven out of ten.

Single location management, intuitive interface, and simple implmentation
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of Nutanix Prism is the single location management. You can manage everything from one location HTML5 web interface which is highly intuitive. The solution is easy to use, you do not need to be an expert in storage."
  • "Nutanix Prism could improve by having more features or configurations in the web interface. We should not have to use the command-line interface(CLI). For some clients using the CLI can be difficult."

What is our primary use case?

I am using Nutanix Prism for many types of equipment, such as servers, SAN switches, and storage areas. You are able to manage your infrastructure from one central location, such as VMs and servers.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Nutanix Prism is the single location management. You can manage everything from one location HTML5 web interface which is highly intuitive. The solution is easy to use, you do not need to be an expert in storage.

What needs improvement?

Nutanix Prism could improve by having more features or configurations in the web interface. We should not have to use the command-line interface(CLI). For some clients using the CLI can be difficult.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nutanix Prism for approximately six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Nutanix Prism is highly stable. I experienced all three types of installation, Hyper-V, ESXi, and AHV. For Hyper-V, there are a lot of instabilities.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Nutanix Prism is very simple. You do not have to perform any difficult operations. When you deploy your cluster and perform the workloads, it's called Foundation. When you have completed this, Prism's is accessible. For Prism Element, no configuration is required. The configuration is available once you have deployed your cluster.

The Prism Central, you only have to download a virtual appliance that is available from the Nutanix website. You deploy it where the VM is. You only have to administer your cluster and then you can manage everything in the new platform, it's very easy.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Nutanix Prism a nine out of ten.
