Leveraging ETL capabilities for efficient data processing and reporting
Pros and Cons
  • "Oracle offers ETL with PL/SQL as a programming language for SQL programming, which is majorly used in data engineering."
  • "It isn't as popular as AWS, GCP, or Azure as it lacks scalability and cloud-native services like containerization."

What is our primary use case?

It's a typical client-server architecture where we host databases on a Linux server, and we have an Oracle client that allows connection to the server. We allow connection to dev, test, and UAT environments with different databases, where the production server is on a Linux server.

How has it helped my organization?

The availability of Oracle Database Appliance definitely helps, but you cannot go beyond a certain capacity of server if you are storing a large amount of data. You will need new infrastructure, as it's not as scalable as it's a monolithic system and not distributed.

What is most valuable?

Oracle offers ETL with PL/SQL as a programming language for SQL programming, which is majorly used in data engineering. Shell scripting and Informatica are useful for loading data into the Database and creating, manipulating, and transforming data. It's also good for reporting purposes and can parse semi-structured data like JSON and XML.

What needs improvement?

The scalability part is missing. It isn't as popular as AWS, GCP, or Azure as it lacks scalability and cloud-native services like containerization. The Oracle cloud hasn't reached the level of offering all cloud services that the competitors do.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been familiar with Oracle Database Appliance for close to 14 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Clients are hesitant now because it's on-prem, and the scalability factor is an issue. Oracle doesn't offer modern features available with cloud solutions.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's not as scalable because it is a monolithic system. I would rate its scalability as four out of ten due to some limitations.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Most companies are moving away from Oracle to cloud-based solutions like Databricks and AWS due to more advanced features fit for modern analytic solutions.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup involves having a server and infrastructure. Oracle DB takes care of the installation, so it's not particularly difficult.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I have heard from colleagues that Oracle is very costly compared to open databases like PostgreSQL. I cannot personally comment on it.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have experience with competitors like AWS and Microsoft Azure, and they offer more advanced components and benefits as a package compared to standalone systems.

What other advice do I have?

With current developments, Oracle attempts to incorporate the latest technologies like Azure and AWS, but it must ramp up its offerings to match the capabilities competitors provide in cloud services.

I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

A tool that offers great performance along with simplicity to its users
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features of the solution revolve around its performance, simplicity, and its installation phase."
  • "Oracle's product support is an area of concern where improvements are required."

What is our primary use case?

I have been working as an Oracle consultant for more than fifteen years and have dealt with several customers with several use cases who seek a simple database for usage. Some of the customers whom I have dealt with are into data warehousing, while others were some big banks and so on. In general, I have dealt with a very different set of customers.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of the solution revolve around its performance, simplicity, and its installation phase.

What needs improvement?

It is not the features of the product that require improvement. Oracle's product support is an area of concern where improvements are required. The support team should respond faster to users facing issues with Oracle products. I work in Germany, and if I open a service request with the support team of Oracle at eight o'clock in the evening, I will most likely get connected to an engineer working in the USA at eight o'clock the next evening, which is not good.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Database Appliance for twenty-five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a very stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

If the solution is deployed on an on-premises model, it doesn't offer much scalability to users. Users who have deployed the solution on the cloud get the option to scale up or scale down.

I deal with more than 700 customers who use the services provided by Oracle services.

How are customer service and support?

The solution's technical support is very bad.

What was our ROI?

The product's initial setup phase was straightforward for me, though some of the tool's customers found it difficult. With a good starting point, installing and using Oracle is very easy.

Nowadays, we use scripts, so the installation and implementation can be done in an hour or two. Ten years ago, the deployment took place over a period of two or three days. Ultimately, the time needed to deploy the product depends on how the people involved in the deployment phase use the environment on the customer side.

Speaking about the product's deployment process, I can say that Oracle has different products. When I want to install the database software from Oracle, I use the graphical interface of Oracle with fifteen, nineteen, or twenty pages and click through the radio buttons or use a script to configure the file and attach it to my installation process to complete the installation phase. There are no simple steps for the installation of the database from Oracle. When I want to install some application, the installation process may seem more complex since I have no experience in it.

The solution is deployed on the cloud and on an on-premises model.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Oracle Database Appliance is a very expensive solution. If you have opted for the on-premises licenses from Oracle, then you have to pay yearly. If you have opted for the cloud subscriptions offered by Oracle, then you can pay either monthly or yearly.

If you want to use Oracle licenses and some hardware, then you need to buy the hardware separately. If a customer of Oracle wants to buy internet systems, they can choose it from the hardware provided by Oracle. In short, customers only pay for the hardware they purchase from Oracle and not for any additional services.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend that those who plan to use Oracle go ahead with their plans. I would also suggest they speak with the partners of Oracle, as they are the ones who are much more interested in solving the problems of customers. From my point of view, Oracle is more interested in selling products and not solving problems or giving solutions to customers.

I rate the overall tool a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Easy to manage platform with good stability
Pros and Cons
  • "The product’s valuable feature is its capability to pre-configure and pre-install the settings."
  • "The product's technical support services need improvement."

What is most valuable?

The product’s valuable feature is its capability to pre-configure and pre-install the settings. We can easily manage the website.

What needs improvement?

The product's technical support services need improvement.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Oracle Database Appliance since 2014.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the product’s stability a ten out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support services regarding hardware issues could be better.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We switched to Oracle Database Appliance from the commodity server for better compatibility and performance.

How was the initial setup?

Oracle Database Appliance is easy to implement. It takes two to five hours or up to a day to complete. It needs a basic understanding of how all the product works and the process of allocating the IPs. A team of three people executes the deployment.

What other advice do I have?

The product is pre-implemented in appliances. It doesn’t require any further improvement. It is suitable for mid-sized companies.

I rate it a ten out of ten.

Stable, scalable, and easy to deploy
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature of the solution is the ability to combine all the data without the need for additional devices."
  • "It would be beneficial to have dedicated RAM included in the Oracle Database Appliance."

What is our primary use case?

We usually provide insurance operations software. Therefore, we sell applications to insurance companies, and we use the ODA to configure them to run the application.

How has it helped my organization?

I think one of the reasons I was looking for a comparison between the SPARC and the Oracle Database Appliance is because, with most other services, we can't get everything combined as we can with the Oracle Database Appliance. We would have to get a server, extra storage, and other devices to set up shop. With the Oracle Database Appliance, once we put our application on the solution, it is enough.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of the solution is the ability to combine all the data without the need for additional devices.

What needs improvement?

I am certain that Oracle Servers do not have RAM, not even the usual RAM, or usually obtain OCP. It would be beneficial to have dedicated RAM included in the Oracle Database Appliance.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle Database Appliance is extremely stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Although we have not needed to scale the solution yet, Oracle Database Appliance is scalable.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. The deployment takes one business day.

What about the implementation team?

We implement the solution in-house with the assistance of Oracle technical support when required.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution may be expensive, but when we consider the problems it solves, the stability it provides, and the fact that we don't have to buy separate parts and assemble them into a system, it becomes more affordable. Otherwise, we would have to purchase components from different sources, assemble them, and then pay to resolve any stability issues that arise.

What other advice do I have?

I give the solution an eight out of ten.

There are no other solutions similar to Oracle Database Appliance on the market. I've been looking for others to have compared, but there are none.

Oracle Database Appliance is a good solution and I recommend it.

Good value for money and secure
Pros and Cons
  • "The product is good value for money. It is a secure solution."
  • "The feature that I would like to see improve is the interface. It is really not good. I almost have to work on script by script in it. There is always some issue with the user interface."

What is our primary use case?

Our production database and development are in Oracle Database Appliance. We currently only have one machine, so we are thinking of buying another two.

What is most valuable?

Oracle Database Appliance is scalable. It is a great solution for Oracle Database. This is the best hardware environment you can do it.

What needs improvement?

The feature that I would like to see improve is the interface. It is really not good. I almost have to work on script by script in it. There is always some issue with the user interface.

A firewall feature embedded in the solution would be good as well.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Oracle Database Appliance for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Oracle Database Appliance is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Oracle Database Appliance is scalable. On a scale of one to 10, with one being bad and 10 being good, I would rate this solution a nine for scalability.

How are customer service and support?

We have been trying to upgrade our database since July of 2022. We have had to open a lot of service requests with Oracle's support. We ended up solving our issue with our developers here in Brazil. I realized then that Oracle's local support do not talk to other Oracle support people who. It's very strange; sometimes it feels like two different companies.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Posters for a minor database. We switched because it was too small. Oracle Database Appliance is much cheaper for us to use overall.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very difficult for us. It took us 20 to 25 days.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Oracle Database Appliance is very expensive. On a scale of one to 10, with one being cheap and 10 being expensive, I would rate Oracle Database Appliance a seven.

What other advice do I have?

My advice for those looking to implement this solution is: it's a great solution but you will need two machines to run it.

The product is good value for money. It is a secure solution.

Overall, on a scale of one to ten, I would give Oracle Database Appliance an eight.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
