Robust and easy to manage with great support
Pros and Cons
  • "Starwind support is excellent. They are very fast and have very good knowledge of Starwind and Hyper-V Cluster software."
  • "If it's possible to make a driver/solution that does not make use of the iSCSI targets of Windows, that would be great. I don't know if that's possible, however, it could make the configuration a little easier."

What is our primary use case?

We are using Starwind as a virtual SAN Solution for our Microsoft Hyper-V Cluster environment. We have multiple clusters in a couple of different locations over the country.

We wanted a robust HA environment that could run all of our servers on one node without the need for a third witness and without multiple other SAN appliances that need to be managed by a small IT team. We want to make a HA solution with a KIS (Keep it Simple) approach and Starwind has managed to accomplish this for a reasonable price.

How has it helped my organization?

We were previously using HP Storevirtual which was very hard to configure and support and the performance was very bad, plus updating was horrible.

We wanted a simple robust easy-to-manage HA software and have been using a Starwind Virtual SAN (vSAN) at two production locations with a Hyper-V Cluster for almost five years now. It has given us very good performance and hasn't had any issues in the past few years.

Starwind support is excellent. They are very fast and have very good knowledge of Starwind and Hyper-V Cluster software.

What is most valuable?

What we like best about it is that it is the only true two-node Hyper-V cluster solution that's available. On both production locations, we have a two-node setup over two different server rooms.

Our main goal was that we wanted to have all VM servers available on one cluster host in case of a disaster in one of our server rooms.

Microsoft SSD (Storage Space Direct) always needs a third witness (SMB or Cloud), however, in our two-node solution, this is not ideal. Directly connected fiber connections between the nodes make everything fast and make the chance of a cluster split-brain fault less likely.

Pros include:
- Starwind Support will install and configure the software;
- Starwind will do the updates for you, and this all without any downtime of hosts/VMs
- It's the only a two-node cluster scenario available
- It is compatible with the latest Windows Server versions

What needs improvement?

I don't think there is much change needed with Starwind vSAN. The product works very well as it is. I haven't got any new features that I would like to add.

If it's possible to make a driver/solution that does not make use of the iSCSI targets of Windows, that would be great. I don't know if that's possible, however, it could make the configuration a little easier.

The support is excellent and all the people I've contacted have good knowledge of the product. There is nothing to change there.

Hardware-agnostic with an easy to use GUI and good compatability
Pros and Cons
  • "Being hardware agnostic is a must and definitely scored points for us."
  • "The GUI deserves a little love."

What is our primary use case?

In our company, we started searching for a cost-effective SDS solution to include in our portfolio since there aren't many reliable and affordable alternatives around.

For testing, we've set up a small VMware environment with a couple of VMs and connected to StarWind VSAN through Fibre Channel. This is a common environment for most of our customers, who tend to be SMBs, and their environments go from one to six hosts and one block/file storage, on average.

However, the most frequent pain point is managing and delivering storage for different applications while maintaining reliability and performance. That’s where StarWind comes into play.

How has it helped my organization?

We have come to the conclusion that it fits nicely in small/medium environments that, despite their size, still need a swift and reliable storage delivery while being affordable.

In smaller markets, like the one we operate in, there’s not much money hanging around to spend on software, especially when SMBs have budget constraints and must choose between keeping IT staff or improving the infrastructure. That said, spending $100k+ on VMware vSAN is madness.

StarWind VSAN offers an interesting alternative that is both enterprise-level and cost-effective without compromising companies' budgets. Having a free version is also a nice, welcoming sign of commitment.

What is most valuable?

Being hardware agnostic is a must and definitely scored points for us. Despite our portfolio being a little selective, it was nice to see that our hardware options were also supported and there would be no surprises in the future.

The simple (a little dated, yet easy-to-use) GUI was another good thing. We’re in 2024, and most SMBs can’t afford IT-specialized teams, so they rely on service providers like ourselves to keep things running.

VMware/Hyper-V compatibility has got us all covered since our customer base all runs on one of those two players. However, after three months of testing, we still haven't tested replication features. We'll do it soon.

What needs improvement?

The GUI deserves a little love. It is simple and works fine. However, the overall design is a little bit dated.

Updating the documentation would be welcome, too, since there are docs that point to Windows Server 2016 as the latest version, and the vSphere guide comprises 6.5, while we’re currently on 8.

Being ZFS-based, it would benefit so much to have deduplication and encryption. Immutability would also be a nice addition as it is a hot topic on data protection, and the solutions that offer it are either too convoluted or too expensive.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for three months.

User-friendly and flexible with good support
Pros and Cons
  • "It has improved our organization in terms of its uptime as our main cluster has never been offline due to a SAN failure."
  • "It could have a dashboard so that you can check all servers' SAN health and performance."

What is our primary use case?

This solution was implemented for a Hyper-V production build, where we used StarWind virtual SAN to create and build a redundant DataStor for our clusters. Once this was completed, management and troubleshooting were simple as the application is very user-friendly and highly flexible in terms of configurability. We have never encountered any issues with this product, as it is very reliable.

How has it helped my organization?

It has improved our organization in terms of its uptime as our main cluster has never been offline due to a SAN failure. This is a huge plus for us as we need our data available 24 /7.

What is most valuable?

There are not many futures I can recall that would stand out to me the most, as the entire application functions as one working function.

What needs improvement?

It could have a dashboard so that you can check all servers' SAN health and performance.

With basic knowledge you can use the GUI from the node to create partitions then, creating volumes on the management console and manage it
Pros and Cons
  • "PowerShell library is pretty good feature as I created with APC PowerChute a script to put volumes on maintenance mode then turning off the StarWind nodes together with the VM and Hosts when UPS reaches 15 percent, this way after a blackout or electrical problems when turning servers on again, there is no issues for syncing or data loss due to energy interrupts."
  • "Android app for monitoring and receiving push notifications as alarms or monitoring I/O from any mobile device could be a good feature and nice to have as we are not always on our desk."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is for physical to virtual environment migration, requiring a VSAN storage for a data center we had an old BLC 460 gen 6 blades with physical storage attached. If we had any issues with the hardware or operating system the downtime for production would be for hours, so we created a virtual data center with VMware vSphere and added 3 20TB storage on each host then created 3-node StarWind scenario being shared on all 3 hosts, and creating virtual machines on 3 hosts and now running on StarWind storage.

How has it helped my organization?

StarWind VSAN improved our organization as we had a project to migrate from a physical environment to a virtual environment using Vmware Vsphere 6.7 and we needed a secure VSAN storage to be able to share it over the virtual Datacenter and to be able to use the vSphere high availability feature as we needed storage visible overall host on our SITE, this way we have less downtime if one of the hosts fails and HA comes out as the VSAN storage from StarWind is our main storage where all Virtual Machines are running.

What is most valuable?

One of the best features on the management console is the way you can deploy the VSAN storage, with basic knowledge you can use the GUI from the node to create partitions then, creating volumes on the management console and manage it like, sync priority, or putting them on maintenance mode to be able to restart hosts.

PowerShell library is pretty good feature as I created with APC PowerChute a script to put volumes on maintenance mode then turning off the StarWind nodes together with the VM and Hosts when UPS reaches 15 percent, this way after a blackout or electrical problems when turning servers on again, there are no issues for syncing or data loss due to energy interrupts.

What needs improvement?

  • Easy migration to ZFS system that is being presented on a new version of StarWind, migrations look complicated as this restructures the whole architecture on the raid level, but could be a good option just by having it and letting the user decide this new feature migration, as based on our experience with ZFS systems they work pretty fast and secure.
  • Android app for monitoring and receiving push notifications as alarms or monitoring I/O from any mobile device could be a good feature and nice to have as we are not always on our desk.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for over four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Good stability as we have a mirrored storage.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Pretty good impressions, especially the support.

How are customer service and support?

Fast response and great attention.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We migrated from HPE StoreVirtual.

How was the initial setup?

It was straightforward if you have RAID, array controllers, and network knowledge.

What about the implementation team?

We tried at first doing it ourselves, but I recommend letting the support team the VSAN installations as we missed some configurations that based on their experience we missed as beginners.

What was our ROI?

About $3500 USD every 3 years.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

its a good option compared with other vendors as licence is perpetual and wont charge every three years as HPE.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, we used HPE StoreVirtual, we moved to StarWind to reduce costs. We tried VMware VSAN and the cost was too elevated for our requirements.

What other advice do I have?

By letting the support team do it next time, as based on their knowledge we have the correct configurations.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

The windows-based software environment allows a shared storage system to be set up at no cost
Pros and Cons
  • "StarWind Virtual SAN is a very mature software that supersedes its capabilities with my use cases."
  • "The console is something that I believe could be enhanced."

StarWind Virtual SAN is a very mature software that supersedes its capabilities with my use cases. When it comes to being an easy and fast-to-understand software, StarWind Virtual SAN has too many features for just using it in a few minutes - which I like, because it works.

The windows-based software environment allows a shared storage system to be set up at no cost, which also can be used productively usage with PowerShell.

The software is very deep, complex and profound with many features and the learning resources were pretty tough to find.

A web management interface would be nice, especially for those coming from other solutions that have it. All setup and configuration are done through a dedicated Windows application, so you'll need to install it on every computer you'll be using to manage your cluster.

Most documentation is primarily Windows-based, so it can be difficult to find instructions for the Linux VSA. However, support can often help you find documentation.

The console is something that I believe could be enhanced. It's technically sound, but it can be enhanced and/or made more intuitive. Adding a few right-click options to the interface is my preferred method of searching for specific menu items instead of having to search the entire interface.

Maybe some of these points are will be improved in the future. Other than that, we are very likely to continue using this software for our work.

Intuitive setup, flexible, and makes it easy to add storage
Pros and Cons
  • "It includes every feature that a traditional SAN offers and so much more."
  • "I would like to see improvements in the documentation area."

What is our primary use case?

This is a new product for us, and right now, we are using it in our lab environment, using one HP Z640 workstation and 2xE2267 processor with 64 GB of RAM.

We have installed StarWind vSan to support our VMware vCenter v7.0.3 infrastructure with 2x2TB HDD.

We're also using the same ISCSI service for our Veeam and Commvault backup infrastructure. During our tests, we did not notice any problem with the product.

It was a reliable, simple solution to add more storage on the go and allowed for flexibility. We are truly thinking of using this product in our production.

How has it helped my organization?

I have been using Starwind vSan for some time, and the experience is great. In terms of simplicity and the features it offers. It takes little time to set up everything and prepare the system.

It includes every feature that a traditional SAN offers and so much more.

With the flexibility it offers, we can use expand the storage on the go as soon as our backup services need more space. We are not limited the same way were are on physical SAN storage.

For different services, we use different protocols. SMB, ISCSI, etc.

What is most valuable?

The ability to add storage on the go without putting down the entire infrastructure is useful. This means SLA improvements for our customers, and the continuity of the services is increased.

We also like the ability to use it on the cloud, as our clients use also backup services on the cloud, meaning more security for backups of our clients.

We like the simplicity of setting up the system and making it ready to use for the client.

We appreciate the integration with popular hypervisors and backup systems.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see improvements in the documentation area. Some things need to be clear, although, for some people, the manuals being larger is a big no. That said, it is more important to explain things in detail.

The free version does not offer GUI, and for some people, it will be very difficult to test all the features of the product. They might feel disappointed about the product without a GUI. It would be better to have a trial of the full features for new customers that want to learn about the product.

Other than that, I have no other improvements to talk about.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this product for some months now.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

The previous solution we used was a traditional SAN.

How was the initial setup?

The first setup was simple and intuitive.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented the solution by ourselves in-house.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I did not see any hidden costs. That said, everyone has to keep in mind that on the cloud, of course, the cost will be higher than using local storage.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate other products before StarWind vSan.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Reliable with good support and high availability
Pros and Cons
  • "It provided the much-needed HA on an extremely low budget."
  • "The documentation can be better for the free tier."

What is our primary use case?

In our remote offices, we have two servers on VMware. With no HA for the 10 VMs, StarWind VSAN came to use to address this need. As I had previous experience with it and truly believed that this was the best option, I set up our first remote site and used it for three months on a test. I used that time to gather information on my company's use and tested fail-over, replication, and sync. I was concerned about network usage for replication in my company due to the volume of VMs and data modification needed to replicate; it turns out it was never an issue.

How has it helped my organization?

It provided the much-needed HA on an extremely low budget.

There was always a need to have HA in our remote offices. However, it was never addressed due to a lack of budget. For a time, we experienced faults due to failing hardware, and, finally, when the budget allowed, we started using StarWind vSAN and never experienced outages again.

As we adopted StarWind vSAN we also replaced some hardware that was the root cause of our problems. Nevertheless, StarWind vSAN provided me the certainty of reliability and much-needed tranquility to sleep again.

What is most valuable?

The reliability is the most valuable aspect of the solution. It does not need constant babysitting as it is stable as you need it to be. In our company, the team is small, and we do not have the time to keep checking everything all the time. As unadvised as it is, I simply do not have time to always monitor and check. With this product, I have gone months without even accessing the management console. Support is also reliable, and it is necessary to know you can trust it! I've not used it much; however, the few times that I did, it provided me with the help and guidance I needed.

What needs improvement?

The documentation can be better for the free tier. I've learned that in my home lab. To be fair, I cannot imagine anyone that will use this without performing several tests beforehand. Overall, documentation can be more explanatory and straightforward. That said, it is not bad, it just can be better.

I honestly like that the product is simple and does the job well; for the next release, I hope they keep it that way.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for several years now. I've started using the free edition on my home lab and never let it go. I still use it today at home. I'm decommissioning at my company as we are removing the servers of our remote offices.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I did not use a different solution. After researching my needs, I found a post guiding the simple home lab test use, and it was good enough. I've tested it, loved it, and never looked back.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The setup costs depend on your approach. I like to test everything, and as I do this, I learn. I like to implement everything, so the cost is time allocation in my case. In my company, this is a good investment. As for price and license, there is not much room for negotiation.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I did not evaluate other options.

What other advice do I have?

Go for it; it is awesome.

Great support, no lag, and allows for minimum hardware usage
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution offers easy one-click PowerShell scripts that are ready to run."
  • "For someone entering the IT sector with little knowledge of storage, iSCSI, and virtual disks, they might not find the GUI immediately obvious."

What is our primary use case?

We have two Windows Servers (2019), and two locations, and needed Virtual SAN so that we can use disks that are installed on each server. With StarWind Virtual SAN, we created multiple SAN disks that helped us create a real-time failover cluster replication service for data and SQL.

Installation of Virtual SAN from StarWind was very easy, with a pre-ready directory full of PowerShell scripts that you can easily edit to suit your needs and just run them. That way, you create an environment that fits your needs and is something that you can edit very easily or delete.

How has it helped my organization?

We have been searching for a Virtual SAN for a long time. When we found the Virtual SAN from StarWind, our problems were fixed. The easy PowerShell scripts are ready to edit and run for everyone. We are using it for GEO Failover Cluster and have now been using it for a few months with no problem. We also have real-time replication that is working great. We've had no errors. The startup when using Windows is working with no problem with StarWind, so we connect very easily.

What is most valuable?

The solution offers easy one-click PowerShell scripts that are ready to run. It comes with a bunch of free PowerShell scripts that you can edit and run, and also you can create your own with help of PowerShell.

Not so many Virtual SANs work great with a failover cluster as StarWind does; it has no lag, is working great, has no errors, and we can log it easily.

It has minimum hardware usage, which means a lot to us.

The deployment of StarWind Virtual SAN is very easy; they have online manuals that can help you and guide you with your installation.

What needs improvement?

We are really looking forward to the release of more PowerShell scripts that are easy to use and can be edited by rookies.

Their support is really fast and reliable. You can get it via email or the there's forum community where you already find a lot of questions/answers to your problems and the community will help and guide you through the problems that you have.

We tried to find a con, however, it's really hard. The product just works. If I had to find something, then it would be the GUI. For someone entering the IT sector with little knowledge of storage, iSCSI, and virtual disks, they might not find the GUI immediately obvious.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for a few months now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is great.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is great.

How are customer service and support?

They offer great support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the setup via an in-house IT team.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
