Easy to set up, saves us on hardware costs, and gives us improved fault tolerance
Pros and Cons
  • "StarWind vSAN has allowed us to leverage our server infrastructure more completely without the need to add more hardware."
  • "From what we have implemented, we are not finding any lacking features or issues with our configuration that we would like to see improved."
  • "I would like to see options for automated notifications of any changes, including, for example, synchronization issues."

What is our primary use case?

We are running Dell PowerEdge Series as Hyper-V hosts with StarWind providing a virtual SAN infrastructure to allow for CSVs and data replication between the hosts without having to add dedicated storage hardware.

This serves to allow us to have a fault tolerance of suffering not just a drive loss (RAID Configurations on each server allow for that) but it also allows for the loss of an entire server since we are running N+1.

The servers are directly connected to one another using 10GB NICs, allowing for fast connectivity and support for direct wiring. This meant that we did not have to invest in a dedicated 10GB SAN switch, either.

How has it helped my organization?

Prior to the implementation of this solution, our servers were all standalone Hyper-V Hosts. VMs resided on a host and were unable to live migrate or sustain connectivity when a host had a reboot or maintenance item.

StarWind vSAN has allowed us to leverage our server infrastructure more completely without the need to add more hardware.

The failover ability has proven useful already in maintaining connectivity to VMs during a power event that impacted one host. VMs failed over immediately and the data replication brought the downed host back to fully synced status quickly after reboot.

What is most valuable?

The ability to utilize my onboard disk from the Hypervisor hosts, not requiring the purchase of dedicated SAN hardware, SAN switching, etc., is a real cost value.

The replication of data between the hosts that StarWind does also allows us to create redundancy since we are able to operate at an N+1 configuration. This feature allows for much greater fault tolerance than we have had before.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see options for automated notifications of any changes, including, for example, synchronization issues.

For how long have I used the solution?

It has been a few months since we implemented StarWind Virtual SAN.

How are customer service and support?

The support team, from implementation to general operating questions, has been an incredible value add and well worth our support contract already.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Not at this employer,  but my experience previously does include HP, Dell, EMC, and Nimble hardware-based SAN units.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. StarWind provided good documentation and access to engineers to help guide the process at each step.

What about the implementation team?

StarWind provided guided installation with an engineer. He was quite well prepared and great to work with on the project.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The support contract is well worth it. The price for it was very reasonable and their team has been very engaged whenever we reach out.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I did preliminary pricing on HP, Dell & Nimble, but the costs associated with hardware were going to present a challenge to our school at this point.

What other advice do I have?

As of this time, I really do not have a wishlist of features beyond perhaps some automated notifications of any changes, sync issues, etc. That being said, we have not had any operating issues come up that I would have really needed automated alerts for, so this would just be a wish list item.

From what we have implemented, we are not finding any lacking features or issues with our configuration that we would like to see improved. If this changes over time, I would certainly update my opinion, but for what was advertised, we feel like this is a pretty stable product that is meeting its goals.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Cost-effective, high-performance, and good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "High Availability is the best feature of product."
  • "This solution has allowed the company to create an HA virtual server environment satisfying budget restrictions and reliability requirements."
  • "Maybe in the future, the replication will be supported in more cloud providers."

What is our primary use case?

StarWind VSAN software was easily deployed on the commodity hardware and integrated into the existing IT infrastructure.

We have used in HyperConvergence and Citrix XenServer installations without any problem.

With our customized hardware, we have very good IOPS and throughput.

How has it helped my organization?

This solution has allowed the company to create an HA virtual server environment satisfying budget restrictions and reliability requirements. VM live migration was ensured by StarWind VSAN as well, thanks to building a failover cluster.

The price of StarWind VSAN was another tidbit.

On top of all of this, the StarWind Support Team did everything to ensure that the IT infrastructure was up and running as quickly as possible.

What is most valuable?

High Availability is the best feature of product. You have redundancy of storage systems at a competitive price. All other storage solutions are very expensive and without redundancy and if you have it the price is very high.

Additionally, the feature of asynchronous replication, both for on-site and off-site systems is very competitive. Also the support of LSFS file system is very good.

What needs improvement?

Maybe in the future, the replication will be supported in more cloud providers.

I don't think there are features that this product doesn't have it. It has all of the things that a system engineer will want.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution has excellent stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is excellent.

How are customer service and technical support?

In one problem that I with the performance, they gave me a solution very quickly using a remote session.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before our StarWind Virtual SAN (VSAN) deployment, we had NetApp, IBM DS Series, and HP StorageWorks MSA1000 storage systems.

They have low performance and no replication (is very expensive).

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of this solution is straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented this solution in-house.

What was our ROI?

The ROI for this solution is very good.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

This solution has competitive prices and the implementation is very easy.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did not evaluate other options. We have only classic storage and filers.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend this solution because it gives me flexibility and expandability.

It works like a charm without any problem or concern.

Cost-effective, fast and helpful support, and offers real-time replication between servers
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features are high availability and real-time replication between two servers."
  • "This solution improves many areas in our company including performance, data availability, and data security."
  • "The StarWind Management Console is available only for Microsoft Windows/Windows Server, and should also be available for Linux and macOS, as it would reduce implementation costs."

What is our primary use case?

Our hardware is located in one of the largest data centers in the country, where we have high availability services for our company. Our internal systems include VPN, hosting services like website, email, database, DNS, FTP/SFTP, and SMB/CIFS.

Replication is between two servers with SAS and SSD storage, based on Dell servers. Network connectivity is 40GE for data synchronization and1GE for the heartbeat, directly connected.

We are using WMware vSphere as a hypervisor. This solution is highly scalable and cost effective.

How has it helped my organization?

This solution improves many areas in our company including performance, data availability, and data security.

StarWind VSAN allows us to build high availability and real-time replication, even between two servers. It offers multiple scaling and replication capabilities and includes health and performance monitoring tools. For this reason, we can build highly available services for our company, which are currently essential for the organization's activities.

Our current implementation allows us to maintain the company's production continuity and to maintain constant access to data processed by the company.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are high availability and real-time replication between two servers. StarWind VSAN immediately copies all data to the second server over the 10GE/40GE network to ensure instant failover. Multiple connections can be made for the heartbeat.

What needs improvement?

The StarWind Management Console is available only for Microsoft Windows/Windows Server, and should also be available for Linux and macOS, as it would reduce implementation costs.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using StarWind Virtual SAN for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This product is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of StarWind Virtual SAN is very good.

How are customer service and technical support?

StarWind support is amazing. They are helpful and respond very quickly.

Support is available via teleconference, as well as online. They not only assist with the selection of the appropriate solution but also, help with testing and production implementation.

Eliminates the need for other physical shared storage
Pros and Cons
  • "It's quite easy to install."
  • "If you compare StarWind to EqualLogic EMC or NetApp, it's a cheaper option."
  • "Updating the software can be a bit tricky."
  • "If you're in a high-performance-driven environment, I don't think this is the right solution."

What is our primary use case?

As traditional storage is too expensive, our clients are looking for a more affordable solution. If you compare StarWind to EqualLogic EMC or NetApp, it's a cheaper option.

What needs improvement?

Updating the software can be a bit tricky. You have to go down scripts to put it in maintenance mode, etc. It takes a while to update. From my experience, I think that's a thing that they need to improve on.

Every time I put it in maintenance mode, all of the replications stop. If they could fix this, it would be a great product.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using StarWind Virtual SAN since June 2020.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, it's hard to say because I haven't really added anything.

How are customer service and technical support?

Most of the information was quite clear on their website. The knowledge base is quite sufficient with all the info required. For this reason, I haven't had to contact technical support.

How was the initial setup?

It's quite easy to install. Also, the configuration and documentation guide from their site was quite good.

What about the implementation team?

We don't need maintenance. We do it ourselves. As I said, it's pretty straightforward —  standard, to install. It's not complex.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I think the cost of this solution is quite fair.

What other advice do I have?

Make sure to consider the requirements of your environment. If you're in a high-performance-driven environment, I don't think this is the right solution. In this case, I would go with a traditional storage solution because you'll get better performance out of a physical one. For me, it's just a cheaper solution that doesn't require indigenous apps, etc.

I would not go for enterprise deployment. I'll go with the traditional one. Make sure your requirements fit with what you want to buy.

Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give this solution a rating of eight.

Performs well, quick to set up, stable, and good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "Quick setup, great support, stability is great"
  • "The overall experience is really good, and Starwind VSAN has been working rock-solid from the launch."
  • "Having more support plan options would be nice."

High performance while eliminating the single point of failure.

Our previous physical SAN was outdated and wasn't able to keep up with our needs. It was a single point of failure as well, so we started looking for another solution to replace it. Once we started searching, we found really good reviews and recommendations on StarWind VSAN.

After some consulting, we chose them and weren't disappointed. The overall experience is really good, and Starwind VSAN has been working rock-solid from the launch.

We are especially happy with the pre-sales help, where all of our questions were answered quickly and accurately. The installation and initial configuration were quick. The deployment was completed by StarWind support and everything worked as promised.

Pros: Quick setup, great support, stability is great.

Cons: Having more support plan options would be nice.

Helpful support, easy to set up, and it works on top of hardware or software RAID
Pros and Cons
  • "The iSCSI protocol is quite simple to configure."
  • "StarWind vSAN for Hyper-V solves the problem without any kind of hardware lock-in and with its low impact, easy to configure vSAN solution."
  • "It would be nice to add the ability to use raw partitions instead of file containers."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is hyper-convergence and storage virtualization.

Our configuration has eleven servers installed. Three of these are SQL servers, five are installed as application servers, and on the remaining servers, various small services are hosted. These include web servers, RDP servers, and so on.

StarWind vSAN for Hyper-V consolidated the last three servers into a failover cluster for load balancing and increased availability. This made it possible to transfer the specified services to virtual machines.

How has it helped my organization?

Initially, it was not planned to use virtualization, but at some point, I realized that it was necessary. I had no opportunity to install any shared storage and in this case, the StarWind Virtual SAN solution was perfect.

I did not have any type of failover cluster. StarWind vSAN for Hyper-V solves the problem without any kind of hardware lock-in and with its low impact, easy to configure vSAN solution. This made it possible to create a failover cluster with high performance without significant costs.

What is most valuable?

The most important features for us are:

  • StarWind vSAN requires two nodes, which can be completely switchless, and it doesn’t require any additional equipment to get started.
  • StarWind works on the iSCSI layer.
  • StarWind requires at least two 1 GbE networks.
  • StarWind works either on top of a hardware RAID or a software RAID.
  • There are only three servers in our installation and it was great that I didn't need to buy any additional network hardware.
  • The iSCSI protocol is quite simple to configure.
  • The requirement for two-gigabit adapters also avoided additional costs.
  • In particular, it was important to me that the implementation of the StarWind vSAN solution did not require reinstalling the operating system or reconfiguring the RAID.

What needs improvement?

It would be nice to add the ability to use raw partitions instead of file containers.

I think that using equal partitions would improve performance by eliminating the additional file system necessary to host the container

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using StarWind Virtual SAN for approximately six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I did not face any critical issue for our main purposes.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Very positive. As far as I understand, it will be very easy to scale.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is very competent in matters not only of the product but also of the features of the hypervisor and the operating system on which the installation was performed.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have not used other solutions before.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was not difficult. I received help with the first installation from technical support.

What about the implementation team?

The vendor team helped with the initial setup and I rate their level as very high.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I think that purchasing StarWind Virtual SAN Professional Edition would be optimal for most.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

As an alternative to StarWind vSAN for Hyper-V, I considered Microsoft S2D, but I had to abandon it due to the fact that it does not support hardware RAID.

What other advice do I have?

I have not been using the product for long enough to objectively name the features that should be added in the next release or would not suit me in the current release. The functions that I needed to work on do not cause any complaints from me.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Improved data redundancy by avoiding storage vendor locking and improves the performance and availability of our Customer Service
Pros and Cons
  • "The ability to run the software virtually on every virtualization platform and the ability to eliminate all storage vendor locking are the most valuable features."
  • "We don't need at all of the expensive storage appliances like EMC or HP by using standard x86 servers to provide the same level of data security."
  • "Management tools could be improved, sometimes the usage seems to be slowed down and confusing. A native web interface could also be an option. I love to see in the future port of the software on a general Linux distribution like RedHat or Ubuntu in order to avoid windows license costs. I would also like to see features like erasure coding implemented. On the VSAN software, I would like to see some improvements in the storage pools (eliminate the usage of the file as a data container and use the raw partition)."
  • "Management tools could be improved, sometimes the usage seems to be slowed down and confusing."

What is our primary use case?

I'm running StarWind VSAN in an Hypercoverged virtualization cluster. The capability of running the software on top of a general windows os gives me the ability to create a fully redundant SAN solution on almost every virtualization platform. I'm using the software to provide core infrastructure services like AD, DNS, DHCP to my users. Every service is automatically fully redudant thanks to VSAN and in the event one host goes down VMs will be automatically restarted on a second node with a little downtime.

How has it helped my organization?

The product improves my company's data redundancy by avoiding storage vendor locking and improves the performance and availability of our Customer's Services. We don't need at all of the expensive storage appliances like EMC or HP by using standard x86 servers to provide the same level of data security. We could then lower the prices of hardware support contracts by simply using StarWind VSAN on top servers like Dell PowerEdge or HP ProLiant. The ability to sync data on two servers gives users a perfect disaster recovery plan at almost no cost.

What is most valuable?

  • The ability to run the software virtually on every virtualization platform and the ability to eliminate all storage vendor locking are the most valuable features.
  • The capability of creating a hot copy of my data on another piece of hardware and continually sync it.
  • The ability to increase the performance of reads and writes thanks to data caching and load balancing on the two hardware nodes.
  • The capability to implement an asynchronous replication on the third node outside my main data center in order to create a disaster recovery solution.

What needs improvement?

Management tools could be improved, sometimes the usage seems to be slowed down and confusing. A native web interface could also be an option. I love to see in the future port of the software on a general Linux distribution like RedHat or Ubuntu in order to avoid windows license costs. I would also like to see features like erasure coding implemented. On the VSAN software, I would like to see some improvements in the storage pools (eliminate the usage of the file as a data container and use the raw partition).

Updates to server hardware are now painless and done during working hours with zero stress
Pros and Cons
  • "Updates to server hardware are now painless and done during working hours with zero stress. We had a RAID failure a few months back, and nobody in the building even noticed and there was no after hours time used for repair."
  • "StarWind has allowed us to virtualize our environment without the huge expense of a dedicated SAN, putting cluster technology and its benefits within our reach."
  • "We would like the documentation to be more complete. Most items are covered, but if you don't know something, you may need to contact their support."

What is our primary use case?

We are using VSAN in our cloud environment to provide CSVs to the Hyper-V Group. We are using a converged environment, so we have two commodity class servers configured as a high availability StarWind cluster and then we have many Hyper-V compute nodes that access the CSVs from the StarWind cluster.

We can use Veeam to back up and replicate the virtual machine files from the CSV/cluster.

We use SPF + 10 GbE modules off the shelf and 10 GbE switches off the shelf. We were able to create a redundant network infrastructure to support our SAN network.

How has it helped my organization?

Creating a high availability cluster required the configuration of the cluster on our hardware and the shared space to access the files has improved my organization.

Using the StarWind VSAN solution allowed us to reduce costs by using equipment that we already owned.

StarWind has allowed us to virtualize our environment without the huge expense of a dedicated SAN, putting cluster technology and its benefits within our reach. Server downtime was a constant threat to our operation before StarWind but has never been a problem since.

What is most valuable?

Updates to server hardware are now painless and done during working hours with zero stress. We had a RAID failure a few months back, and nobody in the building even noticed and there was no after-hours time used for repair.

The ability to use off the shelf hardware (servers, RAID cards, SSDs, etc.) is also invaluable in terms of cost and flexibility.

The configuration is so much simpler, with fewer points of failure to worry about. Integration with Microsoft clustering has been perfect, allowing us to leverage our investment in MS server licensing to the fullest

What needs improvement?

The product can be improved:

  • There is no good way to see how all networks are distributed on the console. Besides, once they are created and highlighted, everything seems to be going well.
  • If we stay with Virtual SAN instead of managed devices, it would be nice to have more automated tools to manage iSCSI connections in Windows, which can be a bit confusing at first.
  • We would like the documentation to be more complete. Most items are covered, but if you don't know something, you may need to contact their support.

For how long have I used the solution?

We are using VSAN in our company for about one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. We have tested storage network outages with failure of one or two nodes. The solution is able to stay online or repair itself with ease

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of this solution is impressive. We're very happy to use it.

How are customer service and technical support?

The experience of work with clients/technical support is very positive. Everything is fast and available.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup wasn't difficult.

What about the implementation team?

We have implemented through a group of suppliers. Their level of experience is quite high.

What was our ROI?

Will soon pay off by reducing downtime and maintenance costs.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Make sure that you understand what all of the pieces do and don't make the assumption that you can drop support once setup is complete.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We immediately chose Starwind because our system administrator had experience with this product in the past.

What other advice do I have?

This product is definitely worth the investment.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Highly available with no downtime, easy to deploy, good support
Pros and Cons
  • "Using our own choice of HW allowed us to price our service to answer our customers' needs."
  • "StarWind allowed us to deploy SSD storage with very high availability at a good price at a time where all other vendors were pushing huge premiums on SSDs."
  • "Performance when in storage-separate configuration needs to be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We needed a SAN to support our environment comprised at the time of two Hyper-V 2012 Clusters. We're now migrating to Hyper-V 2019 and we had no issues with the migration from the storage. We use SATA NL and SSD to give our VMs different performance tiers.

Update: We finished the migration and moved all storage iSCSI comms to Mellanox. We have had 0 issues with Starwind.

How has it helped my organization?

StarWind allowed us to deploy SSD storage with very high availabilty at a good price at a time where all other vendors were pushing huge premiums on SSDs. We were also able to deploy different storage tiers with no issues, which was very important to our solution.

What is most valuable?

Using our own choice of HW allowed us to price our service to answer our customers' needs.

The high availability made sure we never had downtime from it.

Having twin nodes has made maintenance and upgrades easy.

Support has always been great with issues and planning.

What needs improvement?

Performance when in storage-separate configuration needs to be improved.

The virtualization layers and not having the storage on the same node as compute take a lot of the IOPS we could have on an HCI scenario, but we grew out of it.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution since 2015.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution itself is simple and having two separate hosts gives it great availability. There is no single point of failure apart from the software itself and while we had some issues we never lost both nodes.

We only came close when Microsoft introduced a bug that crashed our hosts if they had pending iSCSI connections, and you have those if a node is not synced.

How are customer service and technical support?

No issues.

They solved our problems, validated our configurations and roadmap, and suggested improvements.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to this solution, we used HPE MSA. We wanted easier tiering, better performance, and not to have everything on one "box".

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was simple. We chose our HW, validated with support, and had them help configure them.

It's easy to understand and to deploy.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated solutions by HPE, EMC, and NetApp.

What other advice do I have?

We're satisfied with the features available.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

Made it possible to deploy a new infrastructure in the shortest amount of time and at a low cost without purchasing expensive hardware storage
Pros and Cons
  • "It has a nice, simple control panel. You can clearly see the state and health of storage along with the synchronization."
  • "This solution made it possible to deploy a new infrastructure in the shortest amount of time, at a low cost without purchasing expensive hardware storage, and use unused servers."
  • "In the next release, they could make some graphs of the real-time loading, speed of storage, and interfaces. Of course, these can be viewed in other places. But, in the event of a malfunction or troubleshooting, this would be convenient."

What is our primary use case?

We needed to deploy the new infrastructure in our new data center as soon as possible. As a reliable, fault-tolerant storage, we chose StarWind solution. I took two old Supermicro servers and installed them in RAID controllers and SSD drives, then installed Windows Server 2012 R2 with the Hyper-V role. Then, I made StarWind the two-node iSCSI target. The servers were connected to the VMware cluster via the iSCSI 10 GbE interfaces. The storage showed very good speed results with SQL databases, file servers, and MS Exchange, which completely satisfied us.

How has it helped my organization?

This solution made it possible to deploy a new infrastructure in the shortest amount of time, at a low cost without purchasing expensive hardware storage, and use unused servers. As a result, we got a reliable fault-tolerant storage with good performance and placed virtual machines that are important for business on it. This solution has been working for several months without a single failure.

What is most valuable?

It has a nice, simple control panel. You can clearly see the state and health of storage along with the synchronization.

StarWind installs on the Windows Server host where I can monitor RAID using various software already installed in my organization.

  • Easy to install and configure.
  • A lot of documentation, video instructions, and excellent technical support.
  • The ability to install on almost any type of equipment, including legacy.
  • Fast delivery compared to hardware storage facilities, which have a delivery time of four to six weeks.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see all the network adapters in the console with their assigned roles as sync, Heartbeat, and iSCSI, then their link speeds and real-time loading.

In the next release, they could make some graphs of the real-time loading, speed of storage, and interfaces. Of course, these can be viewed in other places. But, in the event of a malfunction or troubleshooting, this would be convenient.

For how long have I used the solution?

Three months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For three months, there has not been a single failure. Testing was performed and restarting one server did not affect the performance of the storage and important virtual machines.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I didn't have that task.

How are customer service and technical support?
