Great support, good high availability, and helpful configurations
Pros and Cons
  • "The ability to host high availability storage between existing servers without additional hardware is a great benefit. This not only saves money but also reduces the complexity of the hardware configuration creating fewer points of failure."
  • "Including their own hyper-visor would be a valuable improvement over simply integrating with Hyper-V."

What is our primary use case?

I have a two-node high-availability setup. The first goal is to use it as a hyper-visor for critical servers to be hosted locally. If this use case works well over time, I may use the Virtual SAN as a storage cluster for multiple servers to connect to.

Two servers used for Hyper-V hosting, with high-speed NVME underlying storage, are being used for high-availability hosting and storage. No additional hardware is required beyond a high-speed network connection between the two (25gbps fiber optic in our case).

How has it helped my organization?

The storage/hosting cluster is currently being used for test servers. We have hosted some of our test SQL servers on the devices to ensure seamless failover and good IO performance.

Once it moves out of testing, we will host critical servers on these devices and will be able to quickly transfer servers between hosts to allow for host server maintenance without VM downtime. It will also provide instant failovers in case of hardware failures, reducing downtime that would otherwise occur while a VM is being restored from a backup or the host server is fixed.

What is most valuable?

The ability to host high availability storage between existing servers without additional hardware is a great benefit. This not only saves money but also reduces the complexity of the hardware configuration creating fewer points of failure.

I also appreciate the alternative this product provides compared with the very restrictive options provided by large vendors for Hyper-Converged Infrastructure. That this solution can be configured on existing hardware and managed on Windows servers as opposed to a proprietary hardware-tied HCI solution is a positive in my book.

What needs improvement?

Including their own hyper-visor would be a valuable improvement over simply integrating with Hyper-V

A more streamlined setup where components like the iSCSI connectors were configured from the application would be useful as well (currently, there is a lot of back and forth between the StarWind application and Windows Server High Availability configuration screens when setting it up)

The only issue I have dealt with is slow contact with support and things like trial license extensions through my sales rep.

For how long have I used the solution?

I used the free version a few years ago and have been using the paid version for around six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The application itself has operated without issue. That said, it is utilizing a number Windows Server roles and hardware devices that themselves can have issues. The web of interconnected components can be harrowing, however, it still is a superior option to a closed-box HCI option that provides no insight for troubleshooting.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

You could have significant scaling by just having more two-node or three-node clusters, but you cannot scale a single cluster past three-nodes currently.

How are customer service and support?

My experience with support was terrific. The only issue was having to communicate through a sales rep instead of being able to directly contact the engineer.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Our previous solution utilized Direct-Attached Storage devices. We are evaluating this vSAN-based approach to storage and integrating hosting to reduce surface area, improve I/O performance, and provide more seamless failovers.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is very complex, particularly regarding network configuration.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing on this product is controlled largely by the number of nodes and the storage volumes involved. One of the cutoff points for license cost is 10TB. If you intend to use storage volumes beyond that size, expect an uptick in cost.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I did some basic research into Azure and Dell HCI options.

Excellent support, great performance, and good redundancy
Pros and Cons
  • "StarWind vSAN has allowed us to grow rapidly while still providing flexibility and reliability."
  • "There is no IPv6 support. That is our only issue at this time."

What is our primary use case?

We exclusively use StarWind vSAN for our virtualization data stores. We have:

VMware: 50 physical hosts, 500 virtual machines
Hyper-V: 10 physical hosts, 100 virtual machines
Internal SAN: 250 users, 50 shares
Disaster Recovery: off-site replication

We currently have 75 data stores across 24 servers.

Primary Performance Cluster:
Eight 72 SSD chassis and a 512 GB RAM cache
A-A-A (three-way high-availability) across servers

Primary Storage Cluster:
Four 36 HDD chassis and a 512 GB RAM cache
A-A-A (three-way high-availability) across servers

How has it helped my organization?

StarWind vSAN has allowed us to grow rapidly while still providing flexibility and reliability. We have not had a complete outage since migrating in 2012. I cannot recommend them enough.

We have completely rebuilt and upgraded our storage infrastructure five times. We could migrate data seamlessly in our live environment without downtime.

We primarily use Supermicro hardware for our storage servers, although not exclusively.

Having a solution that is flexible enough to synchronize between many different hardware vendors is extremely valuable.

What is most valuable?

The three-way high availability (A-A-A) is very useful.

I have never found another product that can provide this redundancy and performance.

We have a complex and demanding environment that requires the ability to scale out while in production. We have utilized StarWind to achieve those needs.

We were the victim of a ransomware attack that was devastating. StarWind ensured we were completely unaffected and it preserved our virtualization environment. Our SAN was completely encrypted, but with off-site asynchronous replication, we were able to restore all our files quickly.

What needs improvement?

There is no IPv6 support. That is our only issue at this time.

The support team is exceptional, and we have always been able to overcome any of the technical issues we have had. I cannot recommend them enough!

Our wish list includes:

  • A Linux install package for vSAN (not just a VM)
  • Central management that supports all of the StarWind services and can provide a network operations level dashboard with customizable alerts (possibly with a mobile app companion with push notifications)
  • IPv6 support

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution since 2012.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is one of the things we absolutely love about StarWind. We have scaled from two servers providing 20 TB to 24 servers providing 2 PB.

How are customer service and support?

I have talked to all levels of support over the years, including the developers. They have an amazing product and an exceptional support team.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did use something else and originally switched as no other solution at the time had real high availability. Most products just offered fail-over options.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was fairly straightforward.

We have evolved into a much more complex environment over time.

What about the implementation team?

We handled the setup in-house.

What was our ROI?

We have been using StarWind since 2012. Our ROI was seen within the first six months.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Users should know that licensing can be reallocated as you retire old servers. I recommend always buying unlimited licenses as needed unless you think you can utilize their data center license.

Reliable with good performance and helpful customer support
Pros and Cons
  • "With an uptime of 384 days, StarWind has improved overall server reliability."
  • "While we had little to no issues in setting up StarWind and received excellent support from the StarWind technicians, we would have appreciated a clearer guideline for a setup with the free version of StarWind Management Console or, in other words - for the setup with the PowerShell."

What is our primary use case?

We use StarWind as redundant, reliable, and fast storage for our two-node cluster in a Hyperconverged Environment. The cluster is a cost-effective way to create a reliable and scalable environment by utilizing all the available hardware while keeping complexity to a minimum.

StarWind serves as storage for our Hyper-V appliance, ranging from databases to fileservers, which are all critical for the company. The storage has a size of around 70 Terabytes, and all traffic is routed through a redundant switch stack of two units.

How has it helped my organization?

StarWind's task is to provide a reliable, fast, and redundant storage solution for our virtual machines while keeping cost and complexity as low as possible. At the same time, it managed challenges in a two-node environment, such as the feared split-brain scenario.

With an uptime of 384 days, StarWind has improved overall server reliability. Our downtime over the year went from two reboots a week for maintenance to zero (in combination with the cluster).

Another improvement is the L1 and L2 cache, which boosts the overall performance of all VMs.

The overall biggest impact on the company, and especially the IT department, is the reduced time investment in maintaining the platform. StarWind has been a "set-up and forget" solution over the past year and already paid itself in the hours it has saved compared to the previous solution.

What is most valuable?

Three features were extremely important for us as a result of using StarWind since its setup:

Reliability and Maintainability. StarWind has been extremely reliable until now without any software-related downtime. Update-related reboots of the nodes were handled without any issues by StarWind and its Fast-Sync technology, which synchronizes data in the background without the need for a full sync.

Performance. Utilizing StarWind with its L1 and L2 Cache helped us boost a variety of file sizes, ranging from databases to renderings. Additionally, StarWind has a market-leading performance in throughput. Benchmarks in our environment showed a transfer of over 750 MB/s from a Windows Fileserver VM to a client device through a 10Gbit connection.

Community. The StarWind Customer Support was excellent, and it helped us clear any remaining questions regarding the setup. In our case, it was the setup of the SSD cache. A StarWind Technician offered us a personal support session with many follow-ups.

What needs improvement?

While we had little to no issues in setting up StarWind and received excellent support from the StarWind technicians, we would have appreciated a clearer guideline for a setup with the free version of StarWind Management Console or, in other words - for the setup with the PowerShell.

Another thing we found out afterward is that StarWind offers several free software solutions to benefit the performance of server infrastructures. One of them is StarWind iSCSI Accelerator/Load Balancer. We would like to ask StarWind to give a more thorough implementation guideline for such free solutions during the setup of storage infrastructure.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution since May 2021.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

StarWind has been pretty much active for the past year without one error or failure. Server maintenance during office hours and the synchronization afterward have never been an issue. No corruption of the storage, no VM crash, nor split brain has occurred in our two-node setup up until now. The heartbeat interfaces are very reliable and show an error through the Management Console when they are down.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

One of the main reasons we bought StarWind was the scalability of the storage. We plan the storage in our Hyperconverged Infrastructure through the addition of storage arrays. Since we have bought the unlimited storage package from StarWind, we are confident that this task will not be an issue.

How are customer service and support?

The customer support was excellent. We initially opened a post on the official StarWind Support page and received a response from a StarWind technician within two hours. By the end of the week, we had a private support session with him where he solved our issue and checked our config for any weaknesses. Overall great experience, and of the reasons we will be staying with StarWind.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use another storage solution like StarWind. Rather, we used an array of NAS Servers, which served a combined iSCSI storage. This approach is more professional and in line with the industry.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was relatively straightforward. The manual was up to date and with images. The only complaint I have is that the guideline is mostly tailored to the paid version of the StarWind Management Console, and for the free version, you need to use the PowerShell templates. The manual should address them more.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented mainly in-house with the exception of the support of a technician, as mentioned in the next field.

What was our ROI?

While I can not give an exact number, compared to our old setup and the maintenance we put in, the ROI should be over 100%.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Through StarWind, in combination with HCI, we managed to reduce our overall hardware costs by about 50% through the avoidance of additional servers and software licensing. My recommendation is to utilize the community when setting up StarWind, which is a very good and strong point that speaks to StarWind and is also one of the main reasons we will stay with them.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, we evaluated StorMagic before deciding on StarWind.

What other advice do I have?

When setting up StarWind, it is fine to experiment with the config file; however, do back them up incrementally. Take your time in setting up a redundant infrastructure and meet hardware requirements (such as redundancy for Sync and Heartbeat Interfaces). Having solid ground to set up StarWind helped us to have a headache-free solution in the end. But that should be self-explanatory.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Easy to implement, great for creating redundancy, and supports various storage types
Pros and Cons
  • "The best part is the easy way it operates with a very clear GUI without any unnecessary items."
  • "There should be some kind of active monitoring connected to StarWind vSAN, so you will be able to act when needed."

What is our primary use case?

We needed redundancy in our "dark" environment. A failover cluster was the best solution for us. We have a complicated infrastructure consisting of various v-hosts and over 40 VMs in all kinds of operating systems.

For continuity, it was necessary to update our VMs without any downtime. It's installed on two v-hosts with the most important machines. This way, we can continue operations without hick-ups. We chose StarWind as it's independent of the hardware used in our v-hosts. We did look at other solutions; however, in the end, StarWind VSAN was the best choice for us.

How has it helped my organization?

We needed a redundant solution for our environment, and it was sufficient to have a two-node cluster.

The implementation went flawlessly with the help of StarWind support. However, technical knowledge is mandatory. Nevertheless, we had a quick installation. Since we had lots of different types of storage available, we were able to assign different types of storage depending on the type of usage for the virtual machines.

We already had an unexpected outage of one of the nodes due to a memory problem, and thanks to StarWind vSAN, our operations continued as expected. It's an easy way to keep your failover cluster monitored.

What is most valuable?

StarWind vSAN is easy to use and has a very clear GUI. The most valuable in StarWind vSAN is the way it works seamlessly with the Microsoft fail-over cluster.

We are working with a two-node setup that suits our needs perfectly. It just works without any technical know-how needed.

The best part is the easy way it operates with a very clear GUI without any unnecessary items.

It's also easy to add an extra node if necessary or connect if you've rebooted one of the nodes. Also, the speed of support is very valuable to us. If you have a problem or question, you'll get almost an immediate answer.

What needs improvement?

The product is as good as it promises.

StarWind vSAN is updated on a regular basis, probably to keep up with Microsoft Windows or other operating systems. As far as I'm concerned, there should be some kind of active monitoring connected to StarWind vSAN, so you will be able to act when needed.

In our dark environment, this is impossible as we don't have any mail server available in our infrastructure, which consists of a few v-hosts, redundant storage, and quite a few virtual machines, all running on Microsoft OS.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for three years.
