Key features to look for in Deduplication Software include:
Data accuracy
Scalability
Integration capabilities
Real-time processing
Reporting and analytics
Data accuracy ensures the software effectively identifies and removes duplicate entries without losing important information. Scalability is critical to accommodate growing data volumes and expanding storage needs. Integration capabilities allow the software to work seamlessly with existing IT frameworks and applications, ensuring smooth operations. Real-time processing enables continuous monitoring and immediate deduplication, which is essential for dynamic environments where data updates occur frequently. Reporting and analytics provide insights into data quality, deduplication gains, and further optimization opportunities.
The ability to automate deduplication tasks is crucial for efficiency. Automation reduces manual intervention and eliminates human errors, helping maintain consistent data quality. Security features are also important in ensuring sensitive data is protected throughout the deduplication process. The software should encrypt and securely manage data access permissions. Customization options enable tailoring the deduplication process to specific use cases, enhancing its effectiveness in diverse environments. Ensuring these features align with requirements helps achieve a streamlined data management process.

The deduplication ratio, Additionally factors such as performance impact, scalability, ease of implementation, and compatibility with existing infrastructure should also be taken into account during the evaluation process however to me the deduplication ratio often serves as a key metric for determining the effectiveness and efficiency of a deduplication solution.
1. read speed, 2. write speed, 3. throughput, 4. data protection/integrity, 5. de-dupe topology - at target, at source, both - for last two check the impact on the source 6. the need for agent/plugin installation - check FW requirements (ports to open etc.) 7. space reclamation (garbage collection, filesystem cleaning etc.) - check if the system will be able to finish GC before next run. 8. ability to scale the system performance and capacity 9. data transfer protocols (tcp/IP, FC, iSCSI etc.) 10. application/backup software interoperability - for source based de-dupe, for additional services like virtual synthetic full backups
