Enables faster on-boarding, beneficial API integration, but correlations could improve
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable features of BigPanda are the API integration was good. It enables us to do faster onboarding."
  • "BigPanda can improve the correlations. We didn't see any big value. It is still good at the same event deduplication, event processing, and ticket creation, but I was more looking at event analysis and event correlation. In that area, it is still no big difference between the other solutions on the market. All of them, are in the same immature stage."

What is our primary use case?

BigPanda is used for event correlations, deduplication, suppression, and auto incident creation. Those are the basic functionalities that we were looking for.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of BigPanda are the API integration was good. It enables us to do faster onboarding.

What needs improvement?

BigPanda can improve the correlations. We didn't see any big value. It is still good at the same event deduplication, event processing, and ticket creation, but I was more looking at event analysis and event correlation. In that area, it is still no big difference between the other solutions on the market. All of them, are in the same immature stage.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using BigPanda for approximately six years.

How are customer service and support?

I have not used the technical support from BigPanda.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of BigPanda's difficulty level depends on the environment. For example, it depends on the level of security we go through, and how many design approvals need to do. However, it is technically straightforward, but the process to navigate receiving the architecture approval, and security clearance, varies from customer to customer.

The deployment time depends on the complexity, but typically it is at least two months to complete.

What about the implementation team?

We bring our resources and we help customers deploy BigPanda. We have two people that do the deployment. We use one for management and the other for the availability of the backup.

What was our ROI?

If you are dealing with more than 10,000 events per week, then there is a return on investment using BigPanda.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of BigPanda is in the middle compared to other solutions.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to others is if you use this solution or not it depends on the requirement. For example, if a customer has only a couple of monitoring tools, purchasing BigPanda is useless. If the customer has more than 10 monitoring tools in place and generates a large number of alerts and tickets, such as events generated, then it's worth considering BigPanda as a solution. However, at the same time, if the customer already is invested in a solution, such as ServiceNow then going to the BigPanda is another overhead.

I would recommend they put it in ITAM itself so that everything goes into one platform. It's easy to control, and manage. You are reducing many hops because that makes the job easier than sending dollars to BigPanda, then BigPanda converting them into tickets into the ServiceNow. It's an unnecessary overhead. It doesn't mean I'm a fan of ServiceNow, but I'm looking from an architectural point of view.

I rate BigPanda a six out of ten.

Provides an all-round good performance, is user-friendly with a great UI
Pros and Cons
  • "A user-friendly solution."
  • "Lacks sufficient dashboard features."

What is our primary use case?

We use BigPanda to connect to Slack, and all our alerts from BigPanda automatically go to Slack. I'm a DevOps engineer and I believe we are customers of BigPanda.

What is most valuable?

This is an easy and user-friendly solution that has a good UI. BigPanda is great in that it notifies us of problems as well as where they were triggered. It displays all of that and provides an all-round good performance.

What needs improvement?

We'd like to see additional dashboard features included as part of the solution. What we currently have doesn't show if there is any utilization and how much memory is there.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

We contacted customer support at the first stage of implementation but I haven't needed to contact them since.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not complex, we did it ourselves in-house. Deployment time depends on the application. If it's a large application it will take some time to set up. For a small application, implementation can be done in five minutes. We currently have over 100 users.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing costs are reasonable.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend this solution because we previously had to use several tools that were limited in terms of monitoring. We can now do what we need with one solution.

I rate this solution eight out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

  • "The UI for this solution could be improved. It is very hard to find what you are looking for."

What is our primary use case?

We use this solution for alerting purposes to track the health of our infrastructure and services.

What is most valuable?

The most useful feature has been the AI/ML. The way BigPanda uses the AI/ML is good compared to other SRE tools.

What needs improvement?

The UI for this solution could be improved. It is very hard to find what you are looking for.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using this solution for one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable solution.

How are customer service and support?

I have only needed assistance on one occasion. Once I connected to the support team, they were able to solve my problem.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is simple and straightforward. It will take half an hour to connect to one thing into BigPanda.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others to ensure they have internal resources that are good with BigPanda because the UI is not easy to adapt to.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Scalable and stable solution used for incident root cause analysis and event management
Pros and Cons
  • "The event correlation is really good and it is able to reduce the noise. It is a good tool for anomaly detection."
  • "The observability can be enriched with regards to infrastructure and the application-integrated environment. The dashboard and reports could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

If the solution is already deployed in the customer environment, we leverage what the customer has invested in and add on to the existing environment. We use this solution for event management and correlation. We also use it for root cause analysis and SOP-based Runbook Automation. We monitor incident dragging and incident root cause analysis.

What is most valuable?

The event correlation is really good and it is able to reduce the noise. It is a good tool for anomaly detection.

What needs improvement?

The observability can be enriched with regards to infrastructure and the application-integrated environment. The dashboard and reports could be improved. A more integrated multi-cloud environment with regards to Azure, Amazon, Google, and the on-prem solution would be a big advantage.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with BigPanda for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable solution. Once the use cases are deployed, it is easily expandable. The only step that needs to be taken is for the license component for the add-ons to be procured.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward and it takes four to six weeks.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If the customer has invested in and paid for a solution, then we leverage this to write the solution. Alternatively, if the customer wants to use BigPanda but has not implemented it yet, they purchase it and we do the implementation and support. The third scenario is that we purchase BigPanda and it goes to our books and the customer gets the advantage of the discount.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Feature-rich, stable, and the interface is user-friendly
Pros and Cons
  • "The main thing that we like about BigPanda is the user interface."
  • "The cost of this product is too high compared to New Relic."

What is our primary use case?

We use BigPanda for monitoring and management. Our servers are all configured with New Relic, which sends the data to BigPanda.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the dashboard. The main thing that we like about BigPanda is the user interface.

What needs improvement?

The cost of this product is too high compared to New Relic.

It would be helpful if we could receive alerts through IP.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using BigPanda for the past year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

My impression is that it's stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have nearly 6,000 servers configured to use BigPanda.

How are customer service and technical support?

We haven't had any problems so we haven't needed to contact technical support.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is complex.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We pay $200,000 USD per year.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are currently doing research on Moogsoft and are looking to move to it from BigPanda. The reason that we are switching is an issue of cost.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, it is very basic to use. I am satisfied with all of the features and our only complaint is about the high cost.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Bad AI with primitive visualization and not configurable
Pros and Cons
  • "The best of a bad lot was the error message deduping."
  • "BigPanda attempts a little of everything and fails at most."

What is our primary use case?

We wanted a 'one-stop-shop' for event monitoring, visualization, and infrastructure development with AI. Unfortunately, BigPanda attempts a little bit of everything and fails at most.

The AI, in particular, was worthless. The visualization is primitive and not configurable. The only thing they seemed to be able to do is to collect a bunch of identical error messages into one - which is great and all, however, hardly the 'advanced AIOPS solution' they tout.

The best of a bad lot was the error message deduping. We wanted a 'one-stop-shop' for event monitoring, visualization, and infrastructure DevOps with AI.

How has it helped my organization?

The solution has a hard install, poor customer support, primitive and non-configurable visualizations.

The best of a bad lot was the error message deduping. We wanted a 'one-stop-shop' for event monitoring, visualization, and infrastructure DevOps with AI.

What is most valuable?

The best of a bad lot was the error message deduping.

What needs improvement?

Honestly, all areas can use major improvement. We wanted a 'one-stop-shop' for event monitoring, visualization, and infrastructure DevOps with AI.

BigPanda attempts a little of everything and fails at most.

The AI, in particular, was worthless, the visualization primitive and not configurable.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for 1.5 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is highly unstable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is not scalable.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is non-existent. There is no phone and they don't answer emails for days. Buyer beware.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Negative

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We did not use a different solution.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is incredibly complex in hindsight. They had two engineers working around the clock for a simple setup. It was ridiculous. Moog was way smoother.

What about the implementation team?

We did the implementation via a vendor.

What was our ROI?

We got no return on our investment, unfortunately.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I'd advise people to stay away from BP.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did evaluate Splunk.

Alert aggregation and the correlation platform are extremely useful, streamlining our incident management
Pros and Cons
  • "Alert aggregation was the primary requirement. BigPanda pulls all this together into a single UI for us, allowing us to see related alerts grouped together into an incident, and enables us to easily create a JIRA ticket and Slack channel to manage an issue."
  • "We have also made extensive use of the outbound integrations to ticketing systems (JIRA) and collaboration tools (Slack). The main driver for us has been getting all alerting into a single UI and enabling us to streamline our incident management process."
  • "Our infrastructure is quite large - tens of thousands of servers, often with 30-plus checks running on each host with one minute intervals. This generates a lot of data often in bursts (when we have a large scale failure). This has caused some delay in the ingestion pipeline."

What is our primary use case?

We use BigPanda to aggregate alerts from multiple sources (Nagios, Sensu, Wavefront, Splunk, etc.) and correlate related alerts into incidents.

How has it helped my organization?

Historically, much of our incident management process has been manual. NOC engineers would manually create a ticket, create a Slack channel, and escalate out to the necessary teams to troubleshoot an issue. BigPanda pulls all this together into a single UI for us, allowing us to see related alerts grouped together into an incident, and enables us to easily create a JIRA ticket and Slack channel to manage an issue. This has been a dramatic improvement.

What is most valuable?

Alert aggregation was the primary requirement. , although we are still implementing our correlation rules.

We have also made extensive use of the outbound integrations to ticketing systems (JIRA) and collaboration tools (Slack). The main driver for us has been getting all alerting into a single UI and enabling us to streamline our incident management process.

What needs improvement?

Our infrastructure is quite large - tens of thousands of servers, often with 30-plus checks running on each host with one minute intervals. This generates a lot of data often in bursts (when we have a large scale failure). This has caused some delay in the ingestion pipeline.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Generally, the product has been pretty stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

At times of peak alert volume (during a significant incident) we have seen some delay in alert ingestion into the platform.

How are customer service and technical support?

Their support organization has been great to work with. They are very responsive to issues we raise and are proactive in contacting us when they detect a problem with our instance. Additionally, they have been extremely flexible in working to meet our requirements - creating custom integrations where needed - to tie in all our monitoring and incident management tools.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we have used Nagios Check_Mk (aka Multisite) as well as Sensu Uchiwa dashboard to aggregate alerts. With Nagios, were were experiencing scaling issues with the core server platform, given the number of hosts we have in a typical datacenter. Sensu Server solved the scaling issue for us but the monitoring UI for Sensu (Uchiwa) was very difficult to use and had a lot of performance issues. We needed a tool to pull together multiple Sensu instances and provide a workable interface.

How was the initial setup?

It was fairly straightforward. For Nagios, we used their standard, out-of-the-box agent. For Sensu, BigPanda worked with us to customize their standard integration to perform better with our high alert volume. They also worked with us on a custom integration to Wavefront, which we use to alert on time series data.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

They were great to work with on pricing/licensing. Given we are a high-growth company, we needed a flexible site license.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

In addition to BigPanda, we looked at Moogsoft.

What other advice do I have?

I think BigPanda is a great company with a quality product. As with any largescale tooling change there will be challenges, but the team was very responsive in resolving issues.

In my opinion, the biggest difference between BigPanda and Moogsoft is the ability to integrate with Other tools we use for Incident Mgmt (e.g. ticketing/chat). Note that my experience with Moog is almost 2 years old at this point, so they may have made some improvements in this area. But for me the main driver was Moog was more geared toward a single product solution where you do everything inside their product (alert console, ticketing, chat), where BigPanda focused on the console and had integrations with best of breed tools for ticketing/chat. Since we were not looking to replace those areas, BigPanda made the most sense for us. If you are looking at a "green field" install where you don't already have ticketing and chat in place, Moogsoft may make sense.

We also looked at Splunk - and it is a great tool for monitoring/dashboarding, but it didn't really have the correlation capabilities we were looking for and would have required a lot of customization to get it to do the same thing as BigPanda. We still use Splunk, but more as an input to BigPanda for alerts - not the console.
