Helpful automation scripts, good documentation, responsive support, easy to use and manage
The ability to fire up a virtual machine, use it, and then kill it, is quite a valuable feature for me. They have a lot of startup scripts, I think they are called stack scripts, whereby you can install something at a click of a button. For instance, you can install a whole server at the click of a button. Linode gives the users a lot of control. Another thing that I use quite a lot is their documentation. They have documentation on how to perform tasks and often, I use that to educate a client on how to do something or on how to maintain something, et cetera. This is because a lot of customers are used to simpler systems like an iPhone, where if you want an app then you just download it from a store, press a button and it installs, or press a button and it updates. The truth of the matter is that with servers and things like that, whilst people like the push button idea, it's a lot more complex than that. With these stack scripts, the people at Linode have thought about all of the things that a new user would not think about. They do all of that stuff and then walk you through it, and that's where Linode's documentation is really good. They walk you through what you have to do to secure a server, what you have to do to run a patch, or whatever. They've got all those sorts of knowledge bases of information, which I think is invaluable, especially for clients who are uneducated in these things. It's extremely important to me that Linode offers worldwide coverage via multiple data centers, for various reasons. One is that because we live in this global world, our customers are everywhere. Secondly, for people who need geo-redundancy, with for example a server in China and one elsewhere as a backup, it's great. It's also nice because if they were just US-based, I wouldn't be able to use them because I would need to go through a whole process of trying to certify the data integrity in other regions. I'm sure that most people wouldn't bother with this because of all of the EU laws and the UK laws around data privacy. The US's data privacy laws are far more relaxed than what they are on my side of the world. The fact that I can have a server in London means that I don't have to bother with all of that. My physical location of that server is in London and to me, it is really important. When you compare Amazon, they claim to have infrastructure all over the place but I think that the bulk is centered in Germany. Even if it is in a few different places, everything gets backed up to the US, which is a problem for a lot of people.

Allows for automatic scaling of resources and provides built-in firewalls and security features, eliminating the need for external security solutions
One thing that's a bit different is that we're still accustomed to speaking to someone directly. AWS doesn't offer that kind of support. It's only through bots. You're speaking to chatbots, and that can sometimes be frustrating because there's no person on the other side. AI is not a substitute for a person. AWS marketplace is very strong, but somehow AWS doesn't promote it much. They have a huge customer base across the globe, and if products were launched in their marketplace, they could sell like hotcakes. They should improve their marketplace and promote the same product across the globe. They can take a cut, but they should promote it. That's something they don't do very much. So, AWS should promote its marketplace software. The company should promote it aggressively. Currently, they keep it very subtle. If you ask for it, they'll help you out. But they don't seem to advertise, "You're building a product on our platform? Why don't you sell it in our marketplace?" Improvement in AI: AWS is a little behind Microsoft Azure in terms of AI. AWS is still getting there, but the kind of examples and help files available in Azure for AI are much better. So AWS still needs to work on its AI functionality.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The management of different DNS domains is beneficial due to the user-friendly interface that provides all necessary options."
"The fact that you can get a person on the phone has just been fantastic."
"The simplicity by which you can handle your inventory is one of the things I like the most."
"The most valuable feature is that they are flexible and easy to get ahold of if I need something."
"It has helped to minimize the risk and scale services at large in virtually no time."
"The solution integrates easily."
"Linode has many other cloud servers across the globe."
"The cloud management panel is nice."
"It offers durability, high availability, fault tolerance, and a high TCO benefit."
"It is intuitive, easy to deploy, and rather quick to deploy and set up. There are a number of native services in the ecosystem. These services are built into the cloud and are mature enough to support you in many ways."
"This solution is used as the basic requirement for any virtual machines use cases, the storage is used for each use case."
"It has many choices of computer options, storage options, and even database options."
"There is less work for the DBAs. Everything is handled in AWS itself."
"We have seen an improvement in our infrastructure, as the code makes it very easy to deploy quickly to AWS."
"It streamlines tasks like table creation and data loading into Redshift, making the process more efficient and manageable."
"We deploy our core application and our integration platform on AWS EC2 instances. These applications contain multiple containerized Python Django applications, which need to scale up and down dynamically."

Cons

"The suitability of this solution depends on the features that you need. If you're an Uber-sized company then you're probably not going to want to start using Linode. If you are a large-sized organization then you're going to want to start using one of the bigger providers that gives you the scalability and the feature set that you are probably going to be needing in the future."
"There is room for improvement regarding customer support."
"I've had some difficulties with some of their IP addresses being banned by certain mail servers."
"It would be helpful if they offered a service where they handle the Linux security."
"They don't have role-based access control, which is problematic for us."
"I don't know how all of their services work, but my understanding is that they're not offering the entry-level machine for someone who just wants to own their own web page."
"When it comes to marketing and exposure, Linode needs improvement because I just randomly found them by looking for Linux solutions."
"I would like to see more seamless integration with backup, although it's pretty easy to do."
"The setup of the solution is not so easy, it requires various skills to complete it. The whole implementation can take a month."
"Somehow Amazon associated their marketplace as a place to find images of various installs (preconfigured software) and was late in the game enabling and promoting SaaS-based solutions. Thus, the AWS marketplace has near zero awareness in the mind of the prospect to find solutions to various problems plaguing them."
"The product should reduce carbon emissions."
"I don't have complaints. Previously, we asked for more end-to-end workshops, examples, and tutorials and these have been added and improved."
"It should be easier to monitor the performance and generate analytic information so that we can determine how to provide better support for our clients."
"I'm just bugged by the charges that I'm not really able to manage."
"They currently have fewer regions in Asia, especially in India, China, and other places. They can maybe put more data centers in this region."
"It can be daunting because of the number of AWS products there are."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing model is very simple. I like the simplicity of it, starting at $5, then doubling as it goes up from there. That is a brilliant idea, and it is not complex at all. It is about as dead simple as you can imagine. So, if you want to double what you have, then you double your price, pay the money, and reboot. It is done. It's that simple. You can't beat that."
"One key difference is that pricing is very hard to come by and to understand with all the bigger companies. Their pricing models are so weird and it's hard to figure out exactly how much I am going to pay for this kind of service. Everything is piecemeal. With Linode, it's simple and straightforward. You know exactly what you will have to pay at the end of the day."
"At this point, I'm paying more like $35 per month for a slightly bigger machine, and the backup, and the object service."
"The solution is neither cheap nor expensive."
"I pay just over £20 per month and have done so ever since I started eight years ago, which to me is good value."
"The monthly cost depends on your requirements."
"The value for the price is really good."
"Compared to other service providers, like AWS and Google, the cost of services are much less and more affordable. We are saving about 90 percent by going with Linode versus other cloud providers."
"The price, in general, could be better."
"The pricing of Amazon is higher than that of SalesForce."
"It's not very pricey, but it could be cheaper."
"We are happy with the pricing."
"The tool is expensive."
"AWS is much too expensive compared to current on-premises solution for this type of work."
"The tool’s pricing is reasonable."
"It's an expensive product."
