A scalable tool that needs to improve its support, software resiliency, and software stability
The support team is not technically that strong. The previous company that owned the product, Nortel, went bankrupt, after which the transition phase of the product didn't go smoothly. Avaya did not do well with the product's design and engineering after taking the product over from Nortel, after which Avaya decided to outsource the tool to my company, meaning we have worked as a vendor with third-party access to the tool in the name of Avaya. The support was very bad initially, but my company could fix the problems of the customers on time since we had better communication skills than technical-solving skills due to our limitations related to the area of device engineering. When it comes to a feature of the product, my company could enable it for the customers or users of the product. If, by any chance, my company found a bug in the tool, then it was a hectic task for our support team to deal with it since it took months to fix it. Currently, Extreme Networks takes care of the support part, and it might have improved. I rate the technical support a four out of ten.

Cost-effective protocol support and a straightforward setup with room for login enhancements
In the network operations center, I manage our client's bandwidth. We connect with our clients through BGP and OSPF based on client demands. We also manage routing protocols, policies, internal firewalls, and other details like QE bandwidth, client manage bandwidth management, PoE, PPPoE, and DNS…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is very easy to set up."
"It is a very scalable solution. Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"Provides a good redundancy technique."
"We evaluated Cisco routers as well, but we chose ExtremeRouting because it was more user-friendly, budget-friendly, cheap compared to Cisco, and has an easy configuration process."
"Looking at the robustness, I do not know whether it would be carrier grade – let's say for hundreds of thousands of users – but it certainly doesn't balk at 10,000 users or less."
"Technical support is very good, especially when you compare it to other vendors we have here."
"What I like about Extreme Routing is its impressive performance."
"Overall, ExtremeRouting requires less technical depth in order to implement the infrastructure than Cisco, for example."
"MikroTik routers are very user-friendly and easy to manage"
"For a small business, MikroTik is good but if you grow, then MikroTik cannot support it."
"The solution offers very good multi-routing."
"We've enjoyed the fact that it has very good performance."
"The stability is good."
"They are very good at providing the bandwidth for multi-tenants and multi-dwelling units, we're managing WiFi hotspots for hundreds of locations, and the speed and performance are quite there, and they also have very cheap 10G products that come with really good and flexible software, and they are way cheaper than the top brands, and they're able to deliver the same performance and capabilities."
"The deployment process of MikroTik routers and switches is very convenient since it is not command-driven and comes with a graphical user interface, making it much easier to operate."
"The installation of MikroTik Routers and Switches is straightforward; it takes less time than other solutions, such as Cisco."

Cons

"It's not evolving as quickly as we would like it to."
"One area for improvement with Extreme Routing is the need for more accessible and comprehensive training."
"We are concerned with how the solution will evolve to the next generation of Contact Center. It's not evolving as quickly as we would like it to."
"We have not had a very good experience with customer service and support."
"My advice for those looking into ExtremeRouting is: right now all switch manufacturers are backed up for months. If you're looking to implement quickly, I would say shop around a bit because it might be difficult."
"Some of the latest protocols are unavailable."
"The support, software resiliency, and software stability are areas of concern where improvements are required."
"The solution is far too unstable. It's completely unreliable."
"The user interface is not very good."
"The firewall and the VPN features in MikroTik are a little bit hard to set and are not user-friendly in terms of configuring those features."
"Technical support is not very good, as it is usually done through third-parties."
"Configuring load balancing requires a very ground-level configuration that is not easy for normal users."
"There needs to be better support for this solution in India. We have no local support."
"When we had questions around isolation and allocating different hubs and IPs, we couldn't find any verifiable answers."
"Improvements could be made in terms of SD-WAN capabilities and zero-touch provisioning."
"There is an area of improvement. The firewall features are self-contained, but features like email scanning and voice control should be improved. This is the best routing product."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We have no issues with the price."
"This product is a one-time purchase."
"When you buy a license, it is for life and you don't need to buy another one every year."
"When I compare the price of this solution to competitors it is priced a little high. There is not a license required for this solution."
"In our company, we are using MikroTik without a license...However, we are planning to buy their services and subscriptions."
"In terms of the economic side, we're completely satisfied. The price is affordable for both SMEs and enterprises."
