Native encryption ensures secure data management with a simple deployment
The most valuable feature is the on-premises data encryption facilities. By default, we can provide encryption, and this feature in MySQL is why we prefer it over other databases. The native encryption in MySQL encourages us to use this database model more frequently compared to Oracle and other databases. With Oracle, we have to buy another solution for encryption and masking, but MySQL supports native encryption, which enhances our return on investment. It perfectly supports our ROI, and we have no issues with its functionality.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"MySQL is a popular database platform for businesses because it is extremely easy to use."
"The tool is open-source and there is no cost involved in its use."
"The one interesting thing about this product is that it is open source. It comes from an open source product. MySQL has been positioned as open source, but it also provides support."
"We use the basic features of MySQL. The interface that allows us to see the parameters of the server is good."
"This product is a good teaching tool for students who want to learn about networked databases."
"I like MySQL because of its community."
"This specific version of this MySQL has been battle tested for a long time. Any issues are known issues and we pretty much don't have any problems when they're in production. So it's very stable."
"MySQL is a light database. It's not very complex. It's easy to develop, easy to maintain, and easy to back up and restore."
"Any novice user can tune vertical queries with minimal training (or no training at all)."
"The most valuable feature is Vertica's performance and the ease of using the database."
"Bulk loads, batch loads, and micro-batch loads have made it possible for our organization to process near real-time ingestions and faster analytics."
"Vertica is a columnar database, this support our developments in analytics, advanced analytics, and ETL process with large sets of data."
"We are also opening new areas of business and potential new revenue streams using Vertica's analytic functions, most notably geospatial, where we are able to run billions of comparisons of lat/long point locations against polygon and point/radius locations in seconds. "
"Vertica is easy to use and provides really high performance, stability, and scalability."
"It has improved my organization's functionality and performance."
"Speed and resiliency are probably the best parts of this product."

Cons

"Could use some additional JSON query support in the solution."
"When I run into issues, I really have to research how to fix them."
"The backup methods need improvement."
"It does not stand out regarding scalability. When the company size increases, the user base having actual experience with (very) large MySQL solutions is reduced."
"The only service which could be improved is its usability. The entire user experience needs to be revamped to meet the 2018 design standards."
"MySQL is not easily scalable on cost effective consumer grade hardware."
"It would be helpful if there were a graphical user interface to administer, configure, and tune it."
"I did the implementation of the solution myself and I used community support. The support from the vendor costs money."
"In a future release, we would like to have artificial intelligence capabilities like neural networks. Customers are demanding this type of analytics."
"Vertica offers a platform-as-a-service version, but their software-as-a-service solution is only available on AWS. They need to get a SaaS version on Azure and GCP as fast as possible."
"Limitations in group by projections is where I would like to see an improvement."
"Whatever's out, the core is not always as great as the engine, especially their first version."
"Vertica's native cloud support could be improved, and its installation could be made easier."
"I think they need an easy client so that you can write queries easily, but it's not necessarily a weak point. I think some users would need them."
"Metadata for database files scale okay, but metadata related to tables/columns/sequences must be stored on all nodes."
"In our company, we have faced difficulties in scaling the solution for certain use cases."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"MySQL is cheaper than Microsoft SQL Server."
"The pricing falls within the moderate range."
"I am not paying, but I am not sure about the exact licensing requirements."
"I use the open-source free community version."
"The price of the solution is good because we have a good partner."
"I rate the solution's pricing as four out of ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive. For our basic needs, it's quite affordable. However, the cost increases when we need to scale up or require high availability. Our developer team of about 600 people uses MySQL without much issue. The pricing becomes more of a concern on the business side, as we have more end users and need constant database availability and scaling. In those cases, the solution gets a bit more expensive, even though it provides good value for the business."
"My company uses MySQL's corporate licenses."
"This is an open-source product that can be used free of charge."
"It's an expensive product"
"The pricing could improve, it is a little expensive."
"The solution is relatively cost-effective."
"The price of Vertica is less expensive than some competitors, such as Teradata."
"Read the fine print carefully."
"The first TB is free and you can use all the Vertica features. After 1TB you have to pay for licensing. The product is worth it, but be aware of this condition, and plan. The compression ratio is explained in the documentation."
"I think it's starting to get a little expensive. Open source products are starting to get more robust, so I think that's something that they need to start looking at in terms of licensing."
"It is fast to purchase through the AWS Marketplace."
