Free networking tool that lets us quickly check for open ports and gather MAC addresses
Pros and Cons
  • "Nmap's performance is great, and I've never noticed any issues in this respect. It really doesn't put a heavy load on the machine when using it."
  • "It works very nicely for troubleshooting, because when a service isn't running for any of your users, you can use Nmap to check it directly and easily determine whether the service is actually running or not."
  • "Since I started using Nmap, it has been completely based on the command prompt and I think it would help other users if they implemented a decent GUI as well."

What is our primary use case?

We are a manufacturing company and there are two main ways in which we use Nmap. The first way is using Nmap as a tool to determine whether certain services are running or whether certain ports are open. If a machine is not available for some reason, then we will first use Nmap to check whether the machine's ports are open or not. This is our most common use case.

The other reason we use Nmap is to gather the MAC addresses of all the machines in the network.

In total, there are about two or three people who use Nmap at my company because we are working in manufacturing and only require a few people to perform this kind of networking troubleshooting.

What is most valuable?

Nmap's performance is great, and I've never noticed any issues in this respect. It really doesn't put a heavy load on the machine when using it.

Another nice thing about Nmap is that if you know the command prompt, the UI works well and is not too complex.

What needs improvement?

Since I started using Nmap, it has been completely based on the command prompt and I think it would help other users if they implemented a decent GUI as well. In any company you might have multiple experts and a few new people; for the new people the command prompt is usually difficult to grasp at first, but with a GUI they could very easily get started with troubleshooting and playing with different options.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nmap for about five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

There are no problems with stability that I've observed.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is okay. It's easy and quick to use, and doesn't put a heavy load on the machine.

How are customer service and support?

I don't have any experience with technical support for Nmap, mainly because I don't use that many features and so I have no need for support. And with the features that I do use, I always get proper results.

It would likely be another story if we were an IT company but since we only work in manufacturing, we don't have a need for anything other than the simplest of support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are also using Wireshark for troubleshooting, but not in combination with Nmap as it is a different tool for different processes.

How was the initial setup?

The setup process is very simple.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Nmap is open source software, which suits us well because we are a manufacturing company and not an IT company, for example. If we were an IT company, we would probably need to pay for extra support or instead go for another software solution. But as it is, we don't have any need for high-end troubleshooting tools.

What other advice do I have?

I would definitely recommend Nmap to Indian companies and others who are looking into their networking, especially when it comes to troubleshooting server-side resources such as with SaaS, IaaS, or anything which requires checking for open ports. It works very nicely for troubleshooting, because when a service isn't running for any of your users, you can use Nmap to check it directly and easily determine whether the service is actually running or not.

I would rate Nmap a nine out of ten.

Used for scanning ports and detecting operating systems for penetration testing
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution detects the operating systems, which makes testing the software much easier before making the payload."
  • "The solution is not that easy for a beginner to learn."

What is most valuable?

I use the solution for scripting and scanning ports before purchasing them. It makes it much easier because when you know a port is open, you can directly focus on it as vulnerable. The solution detects the operating systems, which makes testing the software much easier before making the payload.

When you know a port is open, you know what to do next. The solution helps us know the ports, detect the operating systems, and collect information about the machine.

What needs improvement?

The solution is not that easy for a beginner to learn.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nmap for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Nmap is a pretty stable solution.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's initial setup is easy. It comes pre-installed on Linux, but I have seen people using it on Ubuntu.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I am using the free version of Nmap.

What other advice do I have?

Since the solution is not easy for beginners, I recommend it to someone experienced. Utilizing the solution's operating system detection capabilities to know the OS is crucial while performing penetration testing. Attacking Windows is much easier than attacking a MacBook.

Overall, I rate the solution ten out of ten.

Displays all the services that are exposed within a permission system

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution to add up the router on a network.

What is most valuable?

Nmap can display all the services that are exposed within a permission system. It offers an option to optimize the scanning process, ensuring that our scans remain undetected by other security tools integrated into the automation system. Additionally, Nmap provides features to adjust the nature of the scan, allowing it to bypass security tools such as EDP and base. Furthermore, it includes options to optimize scan response time and duration.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes, the solution doesn't provide the names of services. We find a solution, but we do not entirely know about it. It utilizes a database of services. When the solution scans, it matches the data obtained from the scan with the entries in the database to display the names of services at the target site. For example, we might have an exposed port but remain uncertain about the associated service. Nmap can identify what services are running and their associated products. It doesn't allow exploiting vulnerabilities automatically. However, having such capabilities could greatly enhance security, particularly for servers exposed to the internet.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Nmap for one and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is stable.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is simple.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

It enhances the scanning phase of vulnerability assessment and penetration testing (VAPT)
    Pros and Cons
    • "It is most efficient network scanner right now."

      What is most valuable?

      These features are very useful:

      • Script scanning
      • OS detection
      • Service detection
      • Port scanning.

Script scanning is useful for identifying and confirming the most common vulnerabilities as it has advanced detection capabilities. The Nmap result provides detailed information about each host as an “interesting ports table”. It lists port number, protocol, service name, version and state of the port.

How has it helped my organization?

It is designed to scan large networks. It enhances the scanning phase of vulnerability assessment and penetration testing (VAPT). Since it is open source technology, it cuts down on the operating costs.

      What needs improvement?

Script scanning has been updated regularly, expecting it to support more of an application security audit and IoT.

For how long have I used the solution?

For the past five years, I have been using this tool. I have used this tool for internal/external network vulnerability assessment, web application security audit, etc.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No issues so far. It is a stable version and keeps on improving due to the continuous support from developers and users.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No issues so far. It is capable of scanning huge networks of literally 100,000s of machines.

How are customer service and technical support?

Nmap comes with no warranty. It is well-supported by a vibrant community of developers and users.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, we were using an advanced IP scanner, SoftPerfect Network Scanner. These scanners made me want to switch between tools for:

      • Identifying live hosts
      • Port scanning
      • OS detection
      • Service discovery
      • Version identification, etc.

Nmap offers all scanning solutions in one place.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In this economy, employees who can save their employers money are highly regarded and will potentially be in line for advancement. Using open source technology is one great way to help your company cut down on costs across the board.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Yes, we were using tools such as Advanced IP Scanner, hping2, and online port scanner.

What other advice do I have?

It is most efficient network scanner right now. It is fulfilling all our security needs, such as finding the live hosts, operating systems detection, service – version detection, port scanning, and script scanning. Apart from this, 50% of network vulnerabilities can be confirmed using this scanner.

It is one of the best network framework available as an open source technology. Go for this tool if you are planning for network penetration testing, network discovery and troubleshooting, etc.
