Take a look at TruView by Fluke Networks if you're looking at a network monitoring solution. Fluke Networks was recently named a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for NPM-D (Network Performance Monitoring and Diagnostics).
Fluke Networks TruView is by the BEST you can in this space - much more as it adds Application Performance Monitoring, VOIP performance monitoring, Deep packet analysis all in a SINGLE appliance that provides for an equally single pane of glass UI.
The Visual TruView platform is a top player in the application aware network performance monitoring, or AANPM, space. As always, it depends on what functionality you're looking for. TruView brings together SNPM, NetFlow, and Packet data to give a holistic view of the network from the end-user's perspective. From what I understand about Solarwinds, its takes the approach from the SNPM side, but may not compare when it comes to application performance. When I talk to customers, I usually ask about redlight/greenlight solutions. Solarwinds can tell you if there is a problem (it's working or it's not), but can it dig into the granular data to help find the problem domain (app, server, or network)? I would prefer Solarwinds for straight up network monitoring any day of the week. It offers so much in the way of reporting and analysis, it's hard to beat. I'll admit that I'm slightly biased to Solarwinds because I use it more, but I also think that says a lot because most of the customers I work with use the product solely.

While I don’t know the software you refer to, I have had a fair amount of experience with SolarWinds
And while I like its scalability and low entry cost, it’s really a function of how far you want to go in programming
Specifics. Device control of equipment is not a trivial undertaking in my view, and you need some really good SME’s to make Solar Winds work on new devices not in its library.
IF simple Monitoring is all you want, Castle Rock “SNMPc” is hard to beat. But if full control is what you are after, then “Site Portal” from CSquared, is my preferred tool.
AS I said before, it’s a customer specific issue, Tools are means to an End, the which is better question is a sales pitch issue, not a technical one.

Nagios is so horrible I can't believe people still recommend it. For network monitoring of enterprise routers, switches, and load balancers I would certainly say that Solarwinds is the way to go.

I don’t know anything about ZABBIX, but SolarWinds is a very broad tool and useful for the really adept at using NMS software and fitting it to a specific application.
We at FAE only recommend tools after studying the customer use needs and evaluation of both their technical and organizations needs to determine best fit.
A Products fit for one customer, may make it totally unsuitable to another. We are not a product company but rather an Engineering Services team.
