Has good base product functionality of data storage and analytics but there should be an option to use it on the cloud
Pros and Cons
  • "The ease of deployment is useful so clients are up and running quickly in comparison to other products."
  • "There are some ways that the handling of unstructured data could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

Aster Teradata is mostly being used for doing mapping and I use it for analytics. Usually, there is a support vendor who will use Teradata to do the database analytics. But sometimes with Teradata, the DB administrators use it to get access to the libraries or the data processes.

I mostly recommend Teradata for data storage because it is easy to deploy and implement.

What is most valuable?

The most useful features are the base product functionality of data storage and analytics. The ease of deployment is also useful so clients are implemented quickly.

What needs improvement?

I think that a couple of things can be improved with this product. One is, of course, that there should be an option for using it on the Cloud. A lot of customers ask me how they can get up and running fast, and this would be the fastest way with the least client effort. I know Teradata already has its own Cloud solution, but I think that is one area that needs more maturation and exploration. We need to do more testing before we begin to recommend it to clients and we can do this because we work directly with Teradata. We are using the Cloud solution and it is more scalable and also the costs are fairly elastic. It should be something we are using more with clients in the future.

At an organization level, I think sometimes the support for development is not forthcoming. It should become more of a part of their ongoing process. If they dedicate more resources to developing along with the latest trends in the industry, Teradata could then bring that functionality out for the current customers and maybe attract other customers as well.

I would say that the company should consider more capabilities in handling unstructured data in a better way. Right now most of the latest solutions that are coming to the market address the need for how to take unstructured data and create a standard map for that. I think that would really help. Right now, I only see most of the data through Teradata with its unstructured processing and some of it is not available. They can do more with this. I think Teradata's mappings are good and very easy to use. I would use it for customer databases as it is. But there still some ways that the handling of unstructured data could be improved and that would really help.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been doing technical solutions for data integration for 22 years. We have a relationship with Teradata for 11 years — since 2008. We implement solutions and have a lot of experience with this product.

How are customer service and support?

My team has had the opportunity to work with technical support. I think it is fair to rate their services as a three-out-of-five. I think they are somewhat above average.

How was the initial setup?

I think the team has been very happy with the setup of Teradata from the system side.

It is taking about a week for deployment. To sort out the clients' needs on the level of technical reports and the results usually takes about two weeks. That is in addition to creating the data warehouse and loading the data.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The feedback I get from customers is the cost is high for what they get. In many cases, another product — other than Teradata — could be better for our clients cost-wise. This is why we are continuing to explore options to see if there are other, more cost-effective solutions. That is an area of the product from Teradata that they need to evaluate.

What other advice do I have?

Teradata has all the best features currently, but I think right now the market is really flooding with multiple options. Many customers have a need for rapid on-premise deployment. I think in that case I would recommend Teradata. But for smaller or medium-sized companies, there are probably other options out there that they might use instead which will fit better for their budget.

On a scale from one to ten where one is the worst and ten is the best, I would rate Aster Data MapReduce (Teradata) overall as maybe six or seven probably. Seven-out-of-ten.

To improve that rating, I think we see that our customers have a lot of unstructured data. So in addressing that in a better way, Teradata would become an eight. It could possibly resolve this in a simple way with better integration in working directly with other solutions that are already available out there. This may be the best solution for that.

Easy to set up and reliable with good performance capabilities
Pros and Cons
  • "I've never had any issues with scalability."
  • "Apart from Control-M, it would be nice if it could integrate with other tools."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution for the EDW.

What is most valuable?

The performance is the key item we appreciate. We're able to easily trigger jobs and we have access to integrations for running jobs. It's easy to use for the most part, which is why I really like it.

It's stable and reliable.

I've never had any issues with scalability.

The initial setup is pretty simple to set up.

What needs improvement?

Apart from Control-M, it would be nice if it could integrate with other tools. Specifically, with respect to the integrations with the automation tools, if that can be increased, and if the tester could be able to test more automation scripts in a better way it would help. The efficiency could always be increased.

Occasionally, at the outset of the implementation process, we struggled a little bit.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've only used the solution for a few months. It hasn't been a year yet. It hasn't been that long.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability has been good so far. It's reliable and the performance is good. there are no bugs or glitches and it doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution seems to be scalable. I've never run into any issues with sizing. It's good.

I cannot recall the exact number of users that are on this solution currently.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is quite good. We used them once or twice and, as I recall, their response was always very quick. We are quite satisfied with the level of service they offer.

How was the initial setup?

For the most part, the initial setup is good. We found it pretty straightforward. That said, sometimes, in the beginning, we struggle.

For us, the deployment took around two hours. It didn't take too long.

We had about ten members on the technical team that handled deployment and maintenance.

What about the implementation team?

We are able to handle the initial setup ourselves. As long there are not some prerequisites or system issues, then it's possible for us to handle everything.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't have any direct details about the licensing or pricing of the solution.

What other advice do I have?

I'm not sure of which version of the solution we're using. It might be a previous version.

I'd recommend the solution to other users and organizations.

I would rate the solution nine out of ten. We are quite pleased with its general capabilities.

Improves analytics and can be deployed anywhere
Pros and Cons
  • "Teradata can be deployed on-premise, on the cloud, or in a virtual machine, which means customers can move without having to create their architecture all over again."
  • "Teradata's pricing is quite high compared to Redshift, Synapse, or GCP alternatives."

What is our primary use case?

Primarily, Teradata is a traditional data warehouse, but we also encourage our customers to adapt to the logical data warehouse and data lab.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the ability to be anywhere - Teradata can be deployed on-premise, on the cloud, or in a virtual machine, which means customers can move without having to create their architecture all over again.

What needs improvement?

Teradata's pricing is quite high compared to Redshift, Synapse, or GCP alternatives. In the next release, I would like Teradata to refine their Object Store to be more compatible with cloud environments.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with Teradata since 2014.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Teradata's stability is very strong, and our customers feel their data is safe with it.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Teradata's scalability is good, it takes only the push of a button to scale up, and if that's not enough, you could scale with the cloud or a virtual machine.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward if you have some knowledge about the logic of the environment. However, for those without knowledge, there will be a learning curve to understand how to use the solution.

What was our ROI?

Our customers say that Teradata makes them faster, smarter, and capable of more sophisticated analytics.

What other advice do I have?

For anyone thinking of implementing Teradata, I would recommend preparing by understanding the technology and putting in the effort to keep it being adaptive to different and urgent requirements from your business. I would give Teradata a score of ten out of ten.

It has several redundancy options, so the system is always up and running
Pros and Cons
  • "Teradata features high productivity and reliability because it has several redundancy options, so the system is always up and running."
  • "Teradata needs to expand the kind of training that's available to customers. Teradata only offers training directly and doesn't delegate to any third-party companies. As a result, it's harder to find people trained on Teradata in our market relative to Oracle."

What is our primary use case?

Teradata is primarily for data warehousing at large customers, like banks, retailers, and government organizations. However, we don't use Teradata for Russian government organizations because it's a US tool, and the Russian government doesn't allow foreign software.

What is most valuable?

Teradata features high productivity and reliability because it has several redundancy options, so the system is always up and running.

What needs improvement?

Teradata needs to expand the kind of training that's available to customers. Teradata only offers training directly and doesn't delegate to any third-party companies. As a result, it's harder to find people trained on Teradata in our market relative to Oracle.

They should diversify their sales channels and develop more resellers. Teradata could also be more active in marketing because I rarely see any Teradata events in Russia. They've always had several regional conferences for Teradata users, but I hardly ever see marketing events geared toward new customers.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with Teradata for 11 years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

One of Teradata's biggest advantages is that it's fully scalable

How are customer service and support?

We usually don't have any problems with Teradata itself. However, sometimes customers have issues with applications they've written themselves that aren't adequately designed to fully utilize Teradata's capabilities.

How was the initial setup?

I would not say the setup is too complex. Teradata has a direct sales model, so Teradata employees usually set it up with help from the customer because they don't support a big system of resellers or partners. It's pretty easy because they are actively involved in the deployment. But later on, when the customer is expanding the solution and doing many things themselves, they make mistakes, which should be corrected using the support resources of Teradata.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Teradata is expensive, so it's typically marketed to big customers. However, there have been some changes, and Teradata is now offering more flexible pricing models and equipment leasing. They've added pay-as-you-go and cloud models, so it's changing, but Teradata is generally known as an expensive high-end product.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Teradata eight out of 10. Customers need a certain amount of knowledge to correctly use Teradata when running their applications on the platform. They should also keep in mind the requirements for Teradata's features.

Good performance, flexible, easy to tune queries, and scales well
Pros and Cons
  • "The flexibility in design is very good."
  • "Teradata should focus on functionality for building predictive models because, in that regard, it can definitely improve."

What is our primary use case?

My current use case is an analytical system for an oil and gas company. They have a data lake and they are getting their data from different IoTs and different SAP systems. They wanted to have some feedback about their system and check on their production.

The IoT center's data was actually our use case, then how we can use that data to prevent disaster from happening. Previously, this work was all done manually. If there is a leak in the pipes then it is a large area to search because there are hundreds of kilometers that have been run.

To tackle this problem, they use IoT sensor data. It helps them to understand how the flow is working at a specific point in time, what happens when they're drilling the oil and other types of data. To complete the analysis, we use an analytical system or a Teradata Azure system that we designed.

The ECL was designed in a manner where we were doing the transformation on Hadoop. It is more like a balanced system where you use Hadoop for what it is good for, and where you use Teradata for its purpose.

I have worked in several different environments. The largest Teradata implementation on Azure was done by me. Right now, I'm working with AWS but previously, I have implemented both on-premises and hybrid deployments.

What is most valuable?

Performance-wise, Teradata beats everything.

The flexibility in design is very good.

When you want to tune it, it is very easy to do. I have worked a lot as a DB and I know that when there is a query that is stuck for hours, and you want to tune it, the task is quite easy. You can use the indexes and architecture, and exploit the power of Teradata.

What needs improvement?

There are lots of improvements that Teradata is working on and many that have already been done. However, recently I was in a session with people who are working on the data sciences side of the business. The data science group is not using the Teradata modeling features. Rather, they are using third-party tools for the prediction and forecasting models that they are building. Teradata should focus on functionality for building predictive models because, in that regard, it can definitely improve.

In my experience with Teradata, I have seen their sales strategy and that needs to change. As an organization marketing a product, they need to be cloud-focused instead of the on-premises thinking that they currently have.

There are a few things where you are totally dependent on the customer service and support from Teradata. This is an area where they really need to improve a bit, especially when you're talking about cloud service integration. Depending on the environment you may need to contact the AWS team, or the Azure team, or the GCP team, or the Teradata team. In all of these environments, improvements need to be made.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Teradata for more than a decade, probably close to 11 years. I have been in the industry for approximately 18 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We are satisfied with the stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is quite easy to scale. For a cloud-based deployment, it's even simpler now.

Previously, it was easy if we just wanted to add power but there was an impediment when you had to add a node. Similarly, it was difficult when you had to shift to the newer nodes. Now, however, with the cloud, it's easy to do.

How was the initial setup?

For the on-premises deployment, a lot of people consider the initial setup to be difficult. Keep in mind, however, that Teradata is a million-dollar product, so they set it up for you.

For a cloud-based deployment, it is now pretty simple to deploy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of Teradata is on the higher side, and I think that it where they lose out on some of their business. The price should be reduced to make it more competitive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

One of my clients recently tried to switch solutions but they have rolled back to Teradata. The same thing happened with another company that I know of in Pakistan, where they tried working with an IBM product.

What other advice do I have?

My advice for anybody who is implementing this product is that they really need to hire the right people. Get people who actually have worked on Teradata to guide them.

You can buy Teradata and you can get it up and running, but until you hire a few good people, you are not going to get the full benefits from it. These people are not resources that you would ask Teradata to provide you. Rather, you can hire them from the market.

The important part is that you need to have people who have good experience with Teradata because they can truly exploit its power for you.

Overall, this is a good product. It is close to the best but I cannot rate it perfectly because of the price.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Easy to design and performs well, but needs to be more scalable and flexible
Pros and Cons
  • "I like this solution's ease of design and the fact that its performance is quite good. It is stable as well."
  • "The scalability could be better. The on-premises solution is always more complicated to scale."

What is our primary use case?

We use it as a data warehouse.

What is most valuable?

I like this solution's ease of design and the fact that its performance is quite good. It is stable as well.

What needs improvement?

The scalability could be better. The on-premises solution is always more complicated to scale.

The flexibility could be improved. The product is good if you know what you're planning to do. If you're designing as well, upfront, then it's fine. However, if you've made a mistake in the design work or your system, then it could be quite complex and expensive, and it may not preform well.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Teradata for around four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Teradata is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I've worked on the on-premises solution, and it is always more complicated to scale. We currently have hundreds of users.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Oracle Database before Teradata.

What other advice do I have?

Teradata is quite a specific tool, so if you have suitable use cases, then I would recommend it. On a scale from one to ten, I would rate this tool at seven.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
