It's saved us costs, greatly reducing the number of physical servers, although it could be improved with more storage capabilities and hot-adding of devices.

What is most valuable?

Cost, for one thing, it greatly reduces from physical servers.

How has it helped my organization?

Time, it saves me time. It’s also much easier to manage.

What needs improvement?

More storage capabilities would be great. Also, more hot-adding of devices would be helpful.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Fairly stable – we have issues, but overall it’s a very stable product that doesn’t require much legwork to run.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Not much experience, so I wouldn’t know.

How are customer service and support?

They’ve been extremely helpful. Basically, we create a ticket and they assign a technician that usually calls us back within an hour. They usually do a great job of diagnosing and fixing the problem.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using hardware before, we started that in that development phase and realized the benefits of virtual environments and started migrating over.

How was the initial setup?

It’s fairly straightforward.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I always look at the technical support, product availability, and product stability when selecting a new product. We just looked into vSphere though as there’s nothing else like it.

What other advice do I have?

Nobody’s perfect, but it’s great for our needs, and I would absolutely recommend the product.

It enables us to run lots of servers with minimal hardware. However, the client interface is superior to the new web interface.

Valuable Features

  • The cost, as we can run lots of servers on minimal hardware.
  • Easy to recover from failures. For example, to replace a memory card, just pull out blade and replace it.

Improvements to My Organization

  • Smaller footprint
  • Ease of keeping uptime
  • Reliability

Room for Improvement

I like web interface less and less, and miss the client interface.

Deployment Issues

Licensing that makes it easier to justify getting the features I like, such as the enterprise feature where VMs auto balanced among hosts. This needs to be done by hand because that feature is too expensive.

Stability Issues

Rock solid, just had one VM file decayed, but no other issues.

Scalability Issues

Use it very little, but can scale much more. Only have five or six blades, with 10-12 hosts, and 140 VMs.

Customer Service and Technical Support

They're good, friendly, and professional.

Initial Setup

It was straightforward.

Other Solutions Considered

I had used it before at a former company two years ago, so decided to use it at my current employer, so I didn’t take the company through an evaluation process.

Other Advice

Make sure you have good SysAdmins who have experience with VMware, as this will save money.

If you have not tried the Web Client in Version 6 you should. This one is more on par with the fat client in navigation and speed. The more I use it the more I like it. Also it allows more editing features when you update the HW version of the VMs.

We have lower personnel and investment costs with virtual servers than with physical servers, although the web client is not as good as the C# client.

What is most valuable?

Obviously, the virtualization allows us to save money because we can run many servers on one physical hardware.

How has it helped my organization?

We save power and monty. Virtual servers are much faster than physical servers, so personnel costs and investment costs are also much lower.

What needs improvement?

The vSphere web client is not very good – the C# client is much better.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using it for seven to eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's perfect.

How are customer service and technical support?

Support is not perfect – it’s a long process to get to the experts when you reach out to support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We haven't used another solution. We do an

How was the initial setup?

It's straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

We did it ourselves.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We do an evaluation every few years. We've looked at Microsoft, and ORACLE. I look for continuity, as I need a solution that will be also be available for me in two years etc. I also look at peer reviews, and think that they are very important.

We had a lot of disparate hardware that we've now been able to consolidate onto one platform.

Valuable Features

  • Reliability
  • HA
  • DR
  • Ease of deployment
  • We had a lot of disparate hardware and now able to consolidate into one platform
  • Easy to keep hardware up to date

Improvements to My Organization

So much easier to back things up now. We had Oracle, SQL, everything was just a one-off, but we now have just one process for all our VMs.

Room for Improvement

We have vCloud suite, Hyperion was a pain, but now they've just announced integration into vCenter, so everytime I have a complaint, they’ve already started to address it.

Stability Issues

  • Great stability, no complaints at all
  • More we move to appliances
  • Easy to keep up to date

Scalability Issues

  • We had a lot of standalone boxes, and management wanted to go to VMs
  • We were able to consolidate all hardware without purchasing anything extra
  • Able to carry us through several years when unable to purchase hardware

Customer Service and Technical Support

They've always been excellent, but we rarely contact them maybe one or two times a year. When we’ve had issues, it’s resolved in hours. We have TAM (tech account manager) so helped things along.

Implementation Team

We had vendor come out and it set up on 3.5, and once we got our feet wet, it's easy to maintain and upgrade.

Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing

Only purchase what you’re going to use, our management makes decisions, and buy lots of products we’re not using.

Other Solutions Considered

We chose vSphere because of it's ease of use, especially that it's easier than Hyper-V. Deployment would have been more labor intensive, and wouldn’t have saved any more money in the long run.

We have 750 machines and 50 ESXi hosts that are all consolidated, sharing memory and computing.

Valuable Features

  • Virtualizing everything
  • HA
  • DRS

Improvements to My Organization

When I came, it was already being used, but it helps with consolidation of our 750 machines. We have 50 ESXi hosts, and they’re all consolidated, being able to share memory, computing.

As a partner we have VSPP (VMware Service Provider Program in which we pay per memory usage).

Room for Improvement

The web client needs to be moved from flash-based to HTML5. I would like an app as well for remote access.

Stability Issues

I've had hardly any issues. The ESXi host can stay up and running, and the hardware compatibility is very good, and we're moving towards a virtual appliance (vCenter).

Scalability Issues

It's easy to scale.

Customer Service and Technical Support

I rarely contast them as I had a terrible experience. The made me take down all the linked nodes, and I need to escalate if I want resolutions.

Initial Setup

It's extremely easy, and you can set it up in less than a day. We do nesting virtualizitions and labs all the time.

Other Solutions Considered

Go ahead and buy it. I always go with VMware.

It saves me time when spinning up machines for dev environments, is stable, and scales well.

What is most valuable?

The ability to spin up machines when we need a test and dev environment for client work.

How has it helped my organization?

It saves me time, and at the end of the day, that’s it for me.

What needs improvement?

It fits my needs right now, I honestly don’t need anything else.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It’s stable – no crashes, no bugs, knock on wood, but it’s been great.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have scaled, from about one server to three now. Its very easy to just scale up.

How are customer service and technical support?

I've used them just once. They were responsive, quick, somebody got on the phone and it worked to a resolution quickly.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were limited on space in our data center, with physical servers, and we needed more.

How was the initial setup?

It was very straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

I did it, and it was easy.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Just VMware, my previous job we used it, and it was great. I’ve been a customer for a long time now. I just want something to work, and I know VMware does.

What other advice do I have?

It’s been great. I would recommend it all the time, it’s great. Peer reviews are quite important, as I need to know what others are experiencing before I do.

With the DR and HA functionalities, if any hardware goes down, we have another host with little downtime.

Valuable Features

  • Virtualization
  • Ability to vMotion and create servers on LAN
  • HA
  • DRS

Improvements to My Organization

The ability to build machines on the LAN as the business needs them, and the ability to have good DR and HA, with no hardware that can cause issues. If we go down, we have another host with very little downtime.

Room for Improvement

I would like them to keep the client-based system, even though they are going towards web client.

Stability Issues

It's extremely stable rarely any issues.

Scalability Issues

It's very scalable. We currently have 10,000+ servers, and 80% virtualized, so scalability has to be there.

Customer Service and Technical Support

VMware tech support is excellent. It’s one of the best vendor tech support I’ve found.

Initial Setup

It's extremely easy, very straightforward, and good documentation.

We've consolidated our footprint and decreased the number of hardware hosts, although the web client is an area that needs improvement.

What is most valuable?

Accessibility and the ease of use is unparalleled. The clustering and ability to move virtual machines around on the fly has been amazing.

How has it helped my organization?

We’ve been able to consolidate our footprint and decreased the number of hardware hosts we were running.

What needs improvement?

I think everything we’re looking at should be addressed in 6. I don’t like the web client, I’m sure it’s fine, but I believe 6.0 addresses that.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We just switched, but so far it’s been very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Not yet, we just switched over.

How are customer service and technical support?

I submitted a ticket about four weeks ago, and the guy called me on a Saturday at midnight. It’s been fairly hard to get hold of somebody, and when they get ahold of you, I understood about three of every five words they said. I wished it was better.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were just running Hyper-V, and the size of our team required more. The need to consolidate our servers, as VMware is a lot better with resource management, we didn’t want a large server cluster, so VMware was needed in order to maintain it well with a smaller staff.

Peer reviews actually a huge point in us switching over from Hyper-V. It’s such an old product that it was hard to find any support for it online, and the change we’ve seen in vSphere is night and day. There’s so many peer resources available that it’s been easy to transition for us.

How was the initial setup?

It's straightforward, and the documentation is nice. It's also got a good footprint on the web, that makes it easy to look for other users for knowledge and advice.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I always look at the price before purchasing technology.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Nope, it was the best from what we heard.

What other advice do I have?

I would say from a 4 of Hyper-V, I would easily give this a 7 or 8, as the support definitely improved drastically.

When selecting a vendor, do your research and develop relationships. If you know the product and can get in contact with POCs, we want to see the product before we buy it.
