What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability is very good. There aren't bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. We find it good. It's reliable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is good. If a company needs to expand it, it should be able to rather effectively. It's so easy to create new users and add new features that can be integrated into the solution.
We do plan to increase usage. There may be about 50 people now, however, but by the end of the year, we may be up to 100 or so.
How are customer service and support?
The solution offers very good technical support. We've been very satisfied with the level of service that they provide.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We didn't previously use a different solution. This is our first product for our company to use in this manner.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is not complex. It's pretty straightforward. It was easy.
Depending on the configuration and the number of users the deployment times differ. Typically, it will take between one and three hours.
We used three to five people for deployment and maintenance.
What about the implementation team?
We used a Citrix integrator that assisted us in the implementation.
What was our ROI?
I'd say that the ROI has been good, however, it is not so easy to calculate that. When you get satisfaction from the users and the way they can work around the solution, that's the best return of investment that you can get from any kind of solution.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
We pay for licensing yearly. It's a subscription-based license. We find the price to be quite good.
What other advice do I have?
We are a reseller.
This may be the best solution on the market for these purposes. We've been very happy with it so far.
I'd rate the solution for nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Hybrid Cloud

Information Technology Specialist at a manufacturing company with 51-200 employees
Cost-effective with good uptime, but the features are a little basic
Pros and Cons
- "The continued uptime of our virtual machines is good."
- "Live migration is something that can be improved."
What is our primary use case?
This product makes up our infrastructure and we use it to host several servers.
What is most valuable?
The continued uptime of our virtual machines is good. If there's a problem with one host, the machines get migrated off. This is something that works well.
What needs improvement?
Live migration is something that can be improved.
Modification of virtual machines, while they're still powered on, should be supported.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Citrix Hypervisor for about a year and a quarter.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The newest revision appears to be pretty stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
This is a scalable solution.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have worked with other hypervisors in the past and Citrix is a little more basic.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is pretty straightforward.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Citrix is a good low-cost alternative to VMware, so if budgeting is an issue then I would recommend it.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Lead Engineer at a computer software company with 10,001+ employees
Good for hosting and patching virtual machines, but the technical support needs improvement
Pros and Cons
- "The most valuable features are being able to host many virtual machines and being able to patch machines."
- "You need a licensed account to look up technical support."
What is our primary use case?
The primary use case of this solution is for providing virtual machines to the customers.
How has it helped my organization?
It reduced the number of physical workstations. There was a requirement to have several different workstations physically.
Also, it helped us to keep it standard. This allowed more management of the virtual machines.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features are being able to host many virtual machines and being able to patch machines. For example, have a primary and secondary machine and being able to put the user on one machine and patch up the other one and rotate.
What needs improvement?
Some of the tools are different from VMware and there are some issues with speed in the network.
They need to have some cleared individuals on their team.
There are some limits, and technical support could be improved. The online documentation could be better found within the accounts.
There is an issue with having an actual account versus a standard account.
You need a licensed account to look up technical support.
Better return time when reaching out for support would be an improvement.
For how long have I used the solution?
I had been working with Citrix Hypervisor for approximately six years.
They incremented every new version that came out from XenServer 6 to 7.5.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
There were several times where there were some glitches or it crashed.
Our network is a standalone one that is not connected to the outside. Being able to either update or get any type of support without allowing outside into the internal network was sometimes difficult.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It's a scalable solution. It's easy to scale.
We looked at scaling and going into machine creation services where you have one machine and that's the gold master machine in the update.
We have approximately 150 users in our organization.
Their roles were mostly purposes, usual work.
How are customer service and technical support?
I have used technical support. They were helpful but not helpful for the environment that I worked with because of security reasons. We couldn't give access to the internal network.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Previously, we did not use another solution. We started with Citrix Hypervisor.
How was the initial setup?
I was not a part of the setup process.
What other advice do I have?
I would definitely suggest that you do a trade study with other Hypervisors available.
I would rate Citrix Hypervisor a six out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises
Disclosure: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer. Partner
Senior Manager of Engineering at Mechanics Bank
Most people know VMWare vSphere and MS Hyper-V. XenServer fits right in the middle.
What is our primary use case?
A virtualization platform that was easy to maintain for our staff's level of expertise and allowed for inexpensive licensing when support was required.
How has it helped my organization?
Allowed us to maintain the desired level of high availability between our XenServer farms. Our response time to backend errors was faster than when we had a physical server farm.
What is most valuable?
All features of the product are valuable, depends on the situation. I have used all of the features at one time or another.
What needs improvement?
Integrated workload balancing and virtual switch management that doesn't require another virtual appliance to control.
For how long have I used the solution?
More than 15 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Rock Solid for the most part, of course, as with any technology there are software patches required for specific issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I haven't encountered any scalability issues yet. I have built multiple XenServer pools (simple HA pairs for SMB to large Enterprise deployments of 8-20 physical hosts).
How are customer service and technical support?
Customer Service:
Provided you can get past the tier 1 support personnel quickly, it is great.
Technical Support:
All of the Citrix Engineers that I have worked with have been very knowledgable and helpful.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
VMWare was the previous solution, we switched to lower our licensing costs and support costs.
How was the initial setup?
Installation is very straightforward and can be completed in less than 5 minutes.
What about the implementation team?
In-House team; I tested from the beginning and moved the platform into production.
What was our ROI?
N/A - not able to discuss
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Cannot answer this question; but the product is free, you only need to purchase a license if you want commercial level support from Citrix.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
At the time, there were really only a couple of companies providing virtualization platform technologies. I had found XenSource and started testing the solution.
What other advice do I have?
Test, Test, Test as with any product, make sure it will accomplish what you expect. Citrix XenServer is not marketed out there so most of the people, I talk to, only are aware of VMWare and Hyper-V. XenServer fits right in the middle (in my opinion) of those two products.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
On-premises

Good GPU support, VM Live Migration, and technical support
Pros and Cons
- "What I like the most is the support of the GPU Graphics and the VM Live migration."
- "Network management needs improvement because it is not very stable."
What is our primary use case?
The primary use case of this solution is to manage virtual servers under Citrix.
The deployment model we are using is on-premises.
What is most valuable?
What I like the most is the support of the GPU Graphics and the VM Live migration.
What needs improvement?
Network management needs improvement because it is not very stable.
In the next release, I would like to see more tools added, or included.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This solution is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
There are approximately three hundred users.
How are customer service and technical support?
The technical support is very good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Previously we used a different solution but this one is better.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is simple and straightforward.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
This solution is open source, it's free.
What other advice do I have?
Version eight of this solution is complete.
I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.
Disclosure: My company does not have a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer.

Cost-effective, efficient, and has good support
Pros and Cons
- "The support for this solution is phenomenal."
- "The built-in networking features are a little limited."
What is our primary use case?
We migrated from VMware to XenCenter to cut costs.
How has it helped my organization?
This solution is more cost-effective and hardware-efficient with Citrix VDI.
What is most valuable?
The support for this solution is phenomenal.
What needs improvement?
The built-in networking features are a little limited.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for six months.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Prior to this solution, we used VMware.

IT Manager at a manufacturing company with 201-500 employees
Easy-to-use for virtualization and enables us to make better use of existing resources
Pros and Cons
- "This is a good product for virtualization and it is easy to use."
- "The product could be faster and licensing options could be improved."
What is our primary use case?
We use the product primarily for server virtualization.
How has it helped my organization?
It has allowed us to grow over time because, initially, it was free. We were able to use what would have been budgeted for licensing costs in other ways.
What is most valuable?
Simply the ability to virtualize and make better use of existing resources is the most valuable aspect of this solution.
What needs improvement?
It is a very good product, so there really isn't much that needs to be added. Maybe the speed could be improved. It might be nice if the licensing cost could be improved because it is a big jump when you reach the threshold.
A good addition might be consol management in Linux. Right now I have to start in Windows to manage the system. It is not my preference.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the product for ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
This solution is very stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The whole point of the product is to be scalable, so it has very good scalability.
How are customer service and technical support?
I never had a reason to use technical support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I changed the implementation from XenServer. The product we use now is not really XenServer but XCP-ng which is built on the XenServer open source. Because of the structure of the licensing through Citrix, we changed the product, although it is built on the same source.
How was the initial setup?
The initial deployment of the product was easy. The entire deployment with testing took about one month before it was completed for production.
What about the implementation team?
I did the implementation myself.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
There are costs in addition to the standard licensing fees. In the beginning, because we had a small network, it was free. We have expanded to five physical servers so now we have to pay for all the servers. It is good for others to be aware that the product is only free to a point.
What other advice do I have?
On a scale from one to ten where one is the worst and ten is the best, I would rate XenServer as an eight for the product. For the pricing, I would rate it a five.

A stable, highly scalable solution that offers good integration capabilities
Pros and Cons
- "The solution integrates well with other solutions, which makes it really strong as a primary solution to deploy."
- "The solution is too expensive and people are kind of moving away from Citrix. It's starting to become a problem. It is a primary reason that while we are rebuilding we're going to seek out open-source solutions."
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use the solution for virtualization and for building other things on top of it. Mostly we sell the solution to other customers and offer them support.
What is most valuable?
The solution integrates well with other solutions, which makes it really strong as a primary solution to deploy.
What needs improvement?
The solution is too expensive and people are kind of moving away from Citrix. It's starting to become a problem. It is a primary reason that while we are rebuilding we're going to seek out open-source solutions.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using the solution for a few years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is highly scalable and can be highly integrated with other solutions, which makes it very good.
How are customer service and technical support?
Technical support is good. I would rate them eight out of ten.
Sometimes there are difficulties when you look at the reseller model because you need to go through the reseller to get help, and often they are just salespeople. For us, in Botswana, resellers are typically in South Africa and they are more interested in sales than assistance.
These resellers are only interested in sales. When you are an assistant or a developer like we are, they can't really support you. They can only offer licenses to you. That is actually where the problem is. They have their sales quarters. If you don't meet their quarter they'll cut you off the next time and you have to reapply and go through their checks again, which is not a Citrix problem, but a partner weakness that should be re-considered.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup has a moderate level of difficulty. Someone with a good understanding of the technology will be okay, but if someone who is new to the solution may experience challenges.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
When you try to show clients Citrix, the price kind of scares them away. It's quite expensive.
What other advice do I have?
We are rebuilding our whole news infrastructure. We stopped using the solution for some things, but we will use it once we are finished with what we are currently building.
We're using a hybrid deployment model. We're also a Citrix partner.
I'd rate the solution nine out of ten. I really like the solution. It works well.
