A good tool that's great for modelling and building heat maps
During the first 18 months, for at least three months, we tried to get some training. We started working on the modeling part and we are still evolving in this tool. There are a few recommendations that have been put to the vendor, and we've gotten some answers and the team is evolving the tool in this space. I don't have anything to complain about right now, although there are a few things that we are discussing with the team who is connecting with the vendor to get that resolved. Specifically, we need to understand how the data could be segregated. We need to know how the enterprise-level metadata and master data could be managed in this tool. There are multiple open questions.

Data modeling has transformed regulatory reporting and collaboration across cloud environments
In erwin Data Modeler, areas that have room for improvement include performance improvements. I see that large models sometimes cause it to be slow when opening. Impact analysis can lag as well. Version control is another aspect. If we have developed a current version, it is not integrated with Git where we can easily compare different versions. UI modernization is also something we cannot utilize as it is primarily for development. Additionally, cloud-specific optimizations are needed when it comes to Snowflake or Databricks. When it comes to AI aspects, auto-suggestions for normalization or identifying primary, foreign, or surrogate keys are areas that can be improved.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It helps me to model the architecture at an enterprise level."
"This particular product would be really helpful to model the architecture at an enterprise level."
"The tool allows us to track the life cycle of products and resources. When the metadata is set up correctly, we can see where things are in their life cycle and how they fit into our processes. It helps us understand which core processes are active and whether any underlying elements need renewal. We can also keep tabs on the costs."
"One of the ways Data Modeler has benefited our company is that it gives us the ability to engage with the business alongside IT, because it's friendly."
"The solution is excellent in providing a visual representation of a database and can generate DDL for implementing changes. We use DDL for logical purposes to review with business people, ensuring they have the required fields for processing. We also use it as a data dictionary for the physical data model to understand all the purposes of the terms. This helps us map the logical and physical terms with the business definition to understand our data."
"When you're getting down to the database level, where you're building a design and you're creating DDL out of it, or you're going in the other direction where you're reaching into system catalogs and bringing things back, that starts to really require specialization. Visio isn't going to reverse-engineer that for you. Those features in erwin are valuable."
"Quest can create conceptual and physical data models to facilitate effective communication between business and IT. It can also integrate expertise from various engineering and database systems within your organization to enhance data management and administration."
"We use the macros with naming standards patterns, domains, datatypes, and some common attributes. As far as other automations, a feature of the Bulk Editor is mass updates. When it sees something is nonstandard or inaccurate, it will export the better data out. Then, I can easily see which entities and attributes are not inline or standard. I can easily make changes to what was uploaded to the Bulk Editor. When taking on a new project, it can save you about a half a day on a big project across an entire team."
"The solution's ability to compare and synchronize data sources with data models is fantastic."
"I have used most of the modeling tools available, but I found that erwin Data Modeler is the most suitable data modeling tool in our current industry."
"I compare erwin Data Modeler with other solutions such as ER/Studio and believe it stands out as an enterprise-grade data modeling tool capable of serving different industries, such as finance, healthcare, and telecom."

Cons

"Specifically, we need to understand how the data could be segregated."
"The tool's data lineage could be enhanced. It would be great to see the data flow and understand where it's going within the system."
"We need to understand how the data could be segregated."
"Some Source official systems give us DDLs to work with and they have contents not required to be part of the DDL before we reverse engineer in the erwin DM."
"I would like to have more data sources from other, different vendors. In recent years, the vendor has reduced the number of data sources, and I would like to have more data sources for every brand. For example, with Oracle, I would like to have compatibility for many versions, including old ones, not just the most recent."
"We can only get licenses through partners."
"I would like to see the reporting capabilities be more dynamic and more inclusive of information."
"I would like to see the ability to support more NoSQL platforms more quickly. In addition, enhancing the graphics to render more quickly would be beneficial for any user."
"In terms of improvements, support could have been better in terms of installation, especially of workgroups; we struggled quite a bit to get it up and running."
"I would like to see more support for working with the big-data world. It would be good if they were able to dynamically support big-data platforms, other than Hive and Teradata."
"The UI in erwin Data Modeler can be improved significantly because when any new person opens the tool, all the toolbars are kept open with many tools in view, making it appear chunky."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I use ADOIT's open-source version."
"I don't specifically know what we're paying now. About three years ago, in another organization, I have this memory of 6,000 AUD a seat or something like that, but I am not sure. In the mid-2000s, it was something like 1,200 AUD a seat. I get the impression that there was a price jump when it was spun off from CA as a separate company, which is understandable, but it could sometimes be a barrier in some organizations picking it up. I haven't talked to erwin people yet, but I'm going to suggest to them that they could perhaps think of having an entry-level product that is priced a bit lower, and then, you can buy the extra suite."
"There are no costs in addition to the standard licensing fees."
"An issue right now would be that erwin doesn't have a freely available browser (that I am aware of) for people who are not data modelers or data engineers that a consumer could use to look at the data models and play with it. This would not be to make any changes, but just to visually look at what exists. There are other products out there which do have end user browsers available and allow them to access data models via the data modeling tool."
"This company had bought the license for three years, and it's not an individual license. While you can buy a license for each individual, that would be very expensive. There is something called concurrent licenses where you can purchase licenses in bulk and 15 to 20 people can access the license and model. Concurrent licenses are scalable to the number of users and are proportional to the cost."
"The price of erwin Data Modeler is very expensive, in particular for this part of the world."
"Though the solution is not cheap, it's worth the money."
"erwin is expensive compared to other solutions. We are paying almost $6,000 per seat a month."
"Pricing is very high compared to any other product."
