Has improved data governance by enabling clear ownership and structured access across teams
In my company, Itaú, we don't utilize all AWS offerings due to rigorous security measures. We operate approximately six to eight months behind other available services. I'm uncertain if gaps exist because of this limitation, though the system functions effectively for us. AWS Lake Formation offers column-level access control for databases, but we haven't implemented this feature either because it hasn't been approved by our compliance, governance, or security areas. In our current setup, everyone from my business unit uses the same consumer account. When access is requested for a table, everyone using that business unit account receives access. This could present a security concern, though it benefits new team members who automatically receive all necessary access permissions. However, I struggle to identify specific improvements needed in AWS Lake Formation.

Has consistently delivered high performance and aligned security while evolving with AI-driven improvements
When discussing Oracle Exadata, the main thing is the specialized database appliance, the flash cache, and the engineered machine on the database for the database itself. Overall, all the features are useful and meaningful for any database like Oracle to run the Oracle database. Regarding Smart Scan technology, it is for better performance. If a customer cannot tune their applications, this will help them to run the database and run the application without any tuning itself. Oracle Exadata's advanced compression techniques have affected my customer's data storage efficiency positively, with the feature being great, but as of now, our customer is not using that. I find its security measures align with my customer's organization, as security is aligned as per the customer's requirement. It has helped optimize performance and cost.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"There is no doubt that this place exceeded my expectations with its incredible ambiance, attentive service, and mouthwatering menu."
"AWS Lake Formation has several valuable features that enhance data management, and one particularly beneficial aspect is how it facilitates better collaboration within data teams."
"AWS Lake Formation lets you see all your data and tables on one screen."
"The solution is quite good at handling analytics. It's done a good job at helping us centralize them."
"Every solution has its pros and cons, however, for our purposes, this solution works quite well for us."
"A favorite feature of AWS Lake Formation is that it provides us with visibility into who has access to a particular table or database in Glue."
"We use this to reduce latency from minutes to seconds, as we aim for real-time visibility into patient healthcare monitoring."
"In the shortest form, what I appreciated about AWS Lake Formation was that the schema definition and data cataloging were quite good."
"The best features are its robustness, stability, and performance."
"It offers a significant advantage for accommodating a large number of users."
"Fast performance and tons of storage that we can have to put a lot of databases under the Exadata Server are the most valuable features in this product."
"What I found most valuable in Oracle Exadata is its newer technology that gives better performance. It has more recent hardware and significant changes in the architecture, so it's better than older solutions."
"We want to stay at the front of the cutting edge, and we evaluate and realize that the benefit, the return on investment that Exadata brings for a company of our magnitude and size, is tremendous."
"Oracle Engineered Systems are the best solution for Oracle and non-Oracle applications: hardware and software are combined together to ensure high availability and maximum performance."
"We like the tool’s features like Smart Scan, Hybrid Columnar Compression, and the TFA."
"The product is flexible."

Cons

"Rather than creating an additional hundred tools, optimizing a tool to have a centralized location to do governance would be beneficial."
"In our experience what could be improved are not the support, performance or monitoring, but at a managerial level, the very expensive professional services of AWS. This could be an area of improvement for them. It's too expensive to acquire their support."
"If I could improve AWS Lake Formation, I would add more integrations with SageMaker."
"Athena can be a bit clunky when writing queries, indicating a potential enhancement point for easier user interaction with query tools such as DataGrip using provided driver JARs."
"AWS Lake Formation's pricing could be cheaper."
"For the end-users, it's not as user-friendly as it could be."
"Lake Formation could enhance its capabilities in audit logs, real-time monitoring, and advanced data governance."
"The solution could make improvements around orchestration and doing some automation stuff on AWS front automation. It would be useful if we could use automation to build images and use hardened images which are CIS compliant."
"There were deployment issues with the upgrade process. There was conflicting documentation and varying responses from Oracle support."
"The support for patching – we have Platinum Support – is probably one of the worst I have ever experienced in my career."
"A few improvements can be made such as better resource optimization, virtualization where you can see the virtual machine on top of the Exadata, the ability to limit CPUs, and reduced license costs."
"The analytics features must be improved."
"One small area for improvement in Oracle Exadata is integration, particularly at the consolidated application level."
"Yes, I have actually. Kind of hit and miss. It depends, I guess, on the support engineer really. I think I got more misses than hits."
"Price. Extremely expensive."
"I don't think it's so scalable because Exadata is a box."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"AWS Lake Formation is a bit expensive."
"We pay for an annual license and it is expensive."
"I'm giving Oracle Exadata five out of ten in terms of pricing. Its price could be lower."
"The price of Oracle Exadata is competitive. There are some features that are outside of the initial purchase license, such as some monitoring packages."
"The price of the solution has been expensive to implement."
"There is an annual license to use this solution. The solution is expensive."
"All things considered, the price of this product is fairly high, as is always the case with Oracle."
"The cost of the solution is high."
"The price is very high."
