Report generation offers invaluable insights into database performance
I basically use the solution for database management and to view the performance of a particular database object, any specific program, batch program, or online programs. Using the CSSZ tool, I can effectively monitor performance. In case of an exception, I can inform the application team. At DB2…

Extensive functionality impresses despite occasional setup complexity
The functions and features of Oracle Enterprise Manager that I have found most valuable are its evolution from being problematic in 10g and 11g versions to becoming better and more stable. Now it has become a significantly improved product. We have integrated identity management, and we are using it for normal database examination, tuning, and performance. We are working with STATSPACK and similar tools that are integrated in Oracle Enterprise Manager. We are currently working with version 13.5, having upgraded from 13.4 last year. Automation is useful for improving operational efficiency, and there are many more opportunities to automate outside the databases. Not many things need to be automated inside the databases. We have jobs running, imports, exports, and similar tasks. To automate these processes, we utilize the Scheduler from Oracle, which is managed in the databases by the vendor. This is not part of our DBA functions in Oracle Enterprise Manager.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most important features are batch reporting and the ability to create repositories, enabling automated analysis. These are valuable because they enable me to do automated analysis of trends over time and reduce the time for comparing performance between two periods to identify anomalies."
"If you want your DBA and programming staff to be efficient and effective, I recommend these tools."
"The ability to do the CA utilities faster than IBM using less resources, and the RC/Migrator product that allows us to make changes quickly and efficiently using either the IBM utilities or the CA utilities."
"We had no issues with stability; everything was working perfectly with DB2 v10 and v11 after the upgrade."
"It is very stable. We have had no issues."
"It takes advantage of new features of DB2."
"We switched to the IBM tools for a short time and switched back, due to contract pricing."
"It gives us better insight into our tables and our databases."
"I think what I really like in this product is that DBAs and my management development team don’t have to sit and manually write queries."
"It provides a graphical interface and easy management."
"For any Enterprise edition database customer, I highly recommend that they should implement OEM and at a minimum purchase license for Diagnostic and Tuning pack for database."
"I mostly use the top events, and look at how the execution is happening on the database; and monitoring the cluster level rates. I even look at the execution plan."
"There are a number of different user interfaces you can choose from."
"It is the best database management system."
"The solution's most valuable aspect is the fact that it is embedded with the Oracle database and Oracle's engineering system, its extra data, and analytics."
"It is a must if you have more than a couple of databases to monitor and manage, it can also do a lot of other stuff and monitor various types of targets."

Cons

"The initial set up of parameters is quite exhaustive and some parameters cross products."
"The initial setup is complex."
"These tools have had their share of bugs."
"I look forward to the application of these tools to all platforms in use, such as z/OS, Unix, and Windows."
"They need to provide a way to create and maintain performance repositories. The online tool is not perfect, but it is giving me what I need."
"Only one issue was not resolved but this was because the customer did not agree to send data which the vendor asked for as it was user-sensitive data but without this, a full investigation was not possible."
"It's a good product. I would give it a nine out of 10, and the reason is, in general, it's a technical product so I think that it's a little cumbersome."
"In the case of any particular SQL which is executing for a longer time and causing issues with any particular store or DB2 programs, if it could pinpoint the problems like any other tool should do, that would be really helpful."
"Patching. It's extremely difficult to determine what requires patching and the process to patch each component is slightly different."
"If you see the documentation, it's not really that much good."
"Enterprise Manager is not easy or for the faint of heart. It is extremely robust, and hence very complicated to set up and maintain."
"The technical support is not always 100% up to the mark or sometimes not as we expect it to be."
"The product is pretty comprehensive, but quite resource hungry. This might be due to the majority of the application seemingly being written in Java."
"Technical support is good. That said, they take a lot of time before they start acting upon an issue."
"Better mobile access would be useful."
"I would like to have more details and privileges. I would say more grantable and obtainable privileges are needed."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"There are a few bugs with the software which require opening SRs with Oracle Support which contribute to the day-to-day cost. Perhaps 8 hours per month is spent dealing with support, just as a rough guess."
"Based upon 3 days of implementation by a single person, plus licensing costs would be approximately $60,000, including the virtualized hosts."
"Initially, our deal was for three years, and we extended it to five years. Oracle solutions are very costly."
"The pricing is very high."
"It is part of Real Application Testing, so no new investment is necessary for clients who already are already using RAT."
"The license is good but can be improved."
"Oracle Enterprise Manager is a free-of-cost solution. Oracle Enterprise Manager can be expensive only if you go for its licensing part."
"As with all Oracle products, care should be taken when using any features to ensure that they do not activate licensed features that have not been paid for."
