Enables customers to manage security effortlessly with intuitive features and easy integration
In terms of improvements for Fortinet FortiGate, they could offer evaluation licenses, as compared to Meraki, which provides a 90-day evaluation. In Fortinet FortiGate, they do not provide standard evaluation licenses; instead, we need to request them from the OEM through the account manager for POCs. If we want to conduct a demo, we need to work with real hardware. In comparison to Cisco, we have DCloud, which helps with providing demos to customers, but in Meraki, I need to reach out to them, book a lab, and they need to provide all the hardware. I need remote access and L3 engineers to program it; only then can I offer a real-time demo to the customer.

Check Point Quantum Force (NGFW) can be improved in several areas. First, the interface could be a little more intuitive for new users. The Smart Console is powerful, but it has a steep learning curve when you start using it. Some simple functions for common tasks would help. Second, the initial setup and configuration take quite a bit of time and expertise. It would be helpful if there were more guides, wizards, or templates to speed that up. Third, the price model could be more transparent and flexible. The license cost can add up quickly, specifically when you want to add more advanced features. Finally, I would appreciate seeing better integration with some third-party security tools we use. Right now, we have to do a lot of manual work to make everything talk to each other. Overall, these are minor things. The core product is really solid and does what it is supposed to do very well. The documentation could be more comprehensive in some areas. When we run into issues, the documentation does not have clear answers, so we end up contacting support. Speaking of support, the response time could be faster sometimes. We have had cases where we need help with a certain security issue, and it takes longer than we would prefer to get a response. As for features, it would be nice to have more general reporting options so we can customize reports for different teams and stakeholders without having to do manual work afterward. One more thing, better mobile access to the dashboard would be helpful. Sometimes we need to check on security alerts when we are away from the office, and the mobile experience is not as smooth as it could be. Again, these are improvements that would make it even better, not issues with the core product itself.

Very good IPS, anti-malware, and VPN capabilities
This product has now served more than 30 years in the market and has evolved tremendously over the years. Check Point administration and management help you through visibility and performance. Even though its price is high, you have one management platform that has a great user experience and is easy to use. The log viewer and its indexing is especially useful. It can lower your administration time and can also be used with an API. If you want a perfect and centralized solution that gives you fast access to all of your network areas, this is the right product. The new AI functions will speed up the administration even more.

Quotes from Members

Pros

"Fortinet FortiGate has positively impacted our organization by providing stronger network security as it's a next-generation firewall, blocking known threats and vulnerabilities in real-time, detecting and controlling thousands of applications, scanning encrypted traffic, and improving VPN and remote access through automated failover and intelligent routing protocols like BGP over IPsec VPN."
"We are very happy with the security features afforded by this product."
"You can create multiple Virtual Domains (VDOMs), which are treated as separate firewall instances."
"The benefits Fortinet FortiGate provides include easy connectivity, user-friendliness, scalability, and easy configuration management."
"It's a user-friendly firewall. Most of the tasks are very simple. It's simple to configure and troubleshoot this firewall."
"FortiGate Next Generation Firewall has a simple configuration."
"SD-WAN feature at no cost is a really great feature for remote locations and HQ, making application steering between many ISP links a simple task by dynamically measuring link quality such as latency, jitter, packet loss, and available bandwidth."
"The solution from Fortinet FortiGate is very good, and our experience has been very good."
"The most valuable feature is that the scalable 64000 Next Generation Firewalls are designed to excel in large data centers and the telco environment as well."
"Since the time we deployed the solution, we are 100% safe and secure."
"The solution's most valuable feature is CDR (content disarm and reconstruction)."
"I rate the tool's stability a ten out of ten."
"The Check Point API let me make 100 net rules in just 10 minutes, which saved us time."
"Everything can be managed from a single dashboard nowadays."
"I love the interface of R.80.30. The R.80 interface is very nicely thought out with everything in one place, which makes Check Point easier to use."
"By far, it's the best security solution one can adopt for their organization."
"The application control of the solution is something that I find very valuable."
"It allowed us to have content filtering and commercially available firewall perimeter management that had been available since 1997, was very functional, and was one of the best brands that had been securing the network."
"Technical support has been good."
"The product offers fairly good centralized administration and monitoring with decent capabilities that allow the administrator to have relevent control over devices."
"Its most outstanding feature is content filtering."
"VPN clients are easy to use and deploy."

Cons

"The area that Fortinet may improve is customer support. When you have an incident, situation, or open a case, the support is not as good as Cisco or other platforms I have tested."
"I would rate the technical support of Fortinet a six or seven out of ten. It is not very helpful. I would like to see improvements in their support."
"I found that the memory usage for the Fortigate firewall are relatively higher than other firewall brand when compared to same traffic volume."
"The initial setup and configuration are not intuitive and require training."
"The reports provided by the equipment could be more detailed, and not so dependent on the FortiAnalyzer."
"Fortinet can add some Machine Learning and AI to improve its accuracy and give it an edge on IPS detection and protection."
"If I had any criticism that I would give FortiGate, it would be that they need to stop changing their logging format. Every time we do a firmware upgrade, it is a massive issue on the SIM. Parsers have to be rebuilt. Even the FortiGate guys came in and said that they don't play well in the sandbox."
"The captive portal could be improved."
"We notice a performance impact if we enable all the security blades simultaneously, as the firewall CPU utilization goes high, so that is something that can be improved."
"The Check Point support needs a lot of improvement."
"The pricing and UI need to be improved."
"The technical support is really poor. We have to wait for approximately 48 hours sometimes for a simple solution."
"We faced many challenges. For example, an issue with the managed view that Check Point has."
"There needs to be advanced troubleshooting."
"Debugging could be improved when compared to the competition."
"My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing is that the setup cost was significant, pricing is substantial, and licensing is very pricey."
"Pricing is sometimes challenging, although it brings a lot of features."
"It should have excellent integration with the other security tools."
"Every time we made a change, the policy took about three minutes to apply, and obviously, when there were emergency changes or changes that we needed that were escalated, they were not modified very, very quickly."
"The reporting from the file or reporting from mobile access needs improvement. The solution, in general, could use better reporting tools."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Although the solution's pricing is high, compared with other products, it may be cheap."
"Fortinet FortiGate has different licensing models, depending on what you're going to do. Services included would depend on the license model. Licenses can be renewed annually."
"Before choosing a piece of equipment you have to take into account the cost-benefit offered by each one. Sometimes it is not worth paying a very cheap price to have a minimum level of security."
"Its price is affordable and lesser than Cisco. Cisco is expensive. In terms of licensing, there is only one issue. If a customer's license has expired a month ago and they do the renewal after one month, Fortinet renews the license from the start of the previous month. The activation of the product is done from the previous month, not from the date of renewal. The customers usually shout and complain that because they are paying today, the renewal should start from today. The support contract renewals or licensing should be renewed from the date of renewal, but Fortinet starts from the day it had expired. It is a loss for customers. They might have had some problems because of which they did not take the license one month before. Fortinet should work on this. Cisco doesn't do this. Cisco always starts from the day they apply for the license."
"It's a year based license."
"The pricing is very reasonable."
"The solution is offered as an annual license."
"When you look at these end security systems and firewalls, these firewalls even five years ago were $50,000 or perhaps $25,000 to implement in some types of customer sites. Now we're talking about tools that are $1,000. In this case, it might have been $500 or something like that."
"When comparing the price of Check Point NGFW to other solutions it's difficult to compare because even though everything is included in the Fortinet price, there are large differences between the models. You need to go to a quite expensive Fortinet firewall to receive the same throughput and functionality as in a Check Point firewall. In the end, they are quite similar in price, Fortinet might be a bit cheaper."
"Check Point NGFW is much cheaper than other platforms, including Palo Alto. Its scalability, especially with the Maestro solution, is a big advantage. If you're looking for good security at a reasonable price with a good return on investment, I believe Check Point NGFW is the way to go."
"The product's price is on the higher side but I also feel that it is more secure than the other solutions in the market."
"The price of this product is not too costly and you do not need to pay for all of the features."
"It is more expensive than Cisco ASA but cheaper than Palo Alto."
"The pricing and licensing part is something that could be improved. Check Point license and pricing are a bit higher compared to competing firewalls. I think they can work on that."
"Though we did not take issue with the price of Check Point NGFW, we felt that it was providing us with inadequate support here in Uganda."
"We pay $5,000-$6,000 a year."
