Reliable switching has delivered long‑term uptime, strong PoE support, and predictable performance
Cisco Systems Catalyst Switches are highly regarded for their performance, reliability, and enterprise-grade capabilities. My main reservation, however, is the pricing. The cost of Cisco Catalyst Switches—and Cisco products in general—is relatively high, especially in many African markets where organizations often need to balance budget constraints with required functionality. There are alternative vendors that offer comparable features at a lower price point. While they may not always match Cisco’s ecosystem, stability, or full feature depth, many businesses still choose them because of the significant cost savings. Another consideration is licensing, which can add to the overall total cost of ownership depending on the deployment model and required features. Overall, Cisco Catalyst Switches remain premium enterprise solutions, but when compared with other OEMs, their higher acquisition and licensing costs can be a major deciding factor for cost-conscious organizations.

Router configuration facilitates effective network solutions
The configurations and CLI of the Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms are valuable features. While I did not appreciate them initially, I have grown to value them. The stability of the router is reliable, and they perform according to our requirements. We are using firewall systems and all other security mechanisms which are state-of-the-art with the Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms. The main benefit of the Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms is their stability.

Cons

"I thought Catalyst switches were stable, but now I'm not so sure."

"The newer models are not so stable. Other products like 6800, 3750, were stable but starting from 3850 it got worse. We have a lot of issues and a lot of bugs. It's a new product so it's understandable but it should be improved."
"Cisco Catalyst Switches should have better performance and be easier to use. Additionally, they should add artificial intelligence features."

"Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms could improve by having a graphical interface. A lot of the younger generation tend to be used to graphical interfaces, command line tends to scare them."

"The main disadvantage is the price when compared to MikroTik, which is much cheaper but less stable."

"Cisco Catalyst Switches is a very expensive solution."
"Cisco switches are expensive. Their price range is based not only on what the product does but also the name in the industry. They are good at what they do. If you need a better product, there are other lineups available."

"It has a very high cost, but understandably, due to its very good quality."
"The licensing, and maintenance fees are paid on a yearly basis."
