Reliable switching has delivered long‑term uptime, strong PoE support, and predictable performance
Cisco Systems Catalyst Switches are highly regarded for their performance, reliability, and enterprise-grade capabilities. My main reservation, however, is the pricing. The cost of Cisco Catalyst Switches—and Cisco products in general—is relatively high, especially in many African markets where organizations often need to balance budget constraints with required functionality. There are alternative vendors that offer comparable features at a lower price point. While they may not always match Cisco’s ecosystem, stability, or full feature depth, many businesses still choose them because of the significant cost savings. Another consideration is licensing, which can add to the overall total cost of ownership depending on the deployment model and required features. Overall, Cisco Catalyst Switches remain premium enterprise solutions, but when compared with other OEMs, their higher acquisition and licensing costs can be a major deciding factor for cost-conscious organizations.

Greatly simplifies troubleshooting; remote access to the router is a huge time saver
The solution has a problem with documentation. Luxul doesn't want to give the documentation to any Joe Bloggs, but even as a dealer going to the Luxul portal, there are no documents. I can always call technical support and ask them if I forget something and I'll get the support, but I shouldn't need to do that. Anything can be improved and unfortunately a good switch is not cheap but there's no choice if you need a special router.

Quotes from Members

Pros

"I am satisfied with the Cisco support."
"I like the management of streaming both audio and video."
"If we are providing a switching solution, it's not just switching, it's a whole solution with DNA, and that is where the whole concept of Network Management and Network Assurance comes in, so Catalyst plays a big role in putting everything together and providing a whole solution to the customer."
"Cisco Catalyst Switches provide high performance and security features that stand out in my daily work, where they handle a high volume of traffic with low latency, making them suitable for bandwidth-intensive applications, web applications, VoIP applications, video streaming, and major data center workloads."
"The product is also flexible."
"VLAN gives us segregation."
"These switches are stable."
"Once it's up and running, configuration is okay, and once it's on the live network, it's fine, no issues."
"All of my customers, including residential and commercial clients, are extremely happy with these switches."

"The solution is less expensive than other options."
"It's a rock-solid connectivity and a rock-solid Wi-Fi coverage, which is what my customers love."
"The solution is excellent for audio-video and multi-casting."

Cons

"They should also have a graphic interface for the switches too without the command line."
"They need to simplify the Web GUI and make it easier to use, and more intuitive for the users."

"In the future, I would like to see better security for this product."
"Catalyst Switches could be more secure."
"They need to implement sFlow."

"Documentation and access to it could be greatly improved."
"You do need to be an IT person in order to handle the initial setup. An AV person would struggle a bit."
"The documentation could be improved; it's quite basic."
