Manageable, provides excellent support, and easily integrates with other products
One central area for improvement in Cisco is its product line offering. Cisco has ISE and other products, such as DNS Center and other components. Instead of small to medium-sized customers purchasing devices and maintaining the devices, it would be great if customers could have subscriptions. A CAPEX/OPEX model instead of that Cisco code, where the pricing model is subscription-based, would give much better flexibility for the customers. The pricing and model for Cisco Cloud Services Router and other Cisco products could be improved. One good example of what I want to be added to the Cisco Cloud Services Router in its next version is for it to be more of a plug-and-play product. For example, Juniper has developed QR codes, so if you need to plug in a device, you scan from your phone and connect to the internet. That's it. You can provision the device remotely through the cloud orchestrator, so I want to see a similar function or feature in Cisco Cloud Services Router.

Highly scalable, especially suitable for complex and large-scale network deployments
The "Commit" feature stands out. When you try to commit commands, you have some options like sandbox config, leaving those temporary for 60 seconds. This feature allows you to commit configuration changes to the candidate configuration, and then review them for errors before committing them to the active configuration. Another feature that I like is the integration with Cisco routers. This allows you to connect Juniper MX routers to Cisco routers and have them work together seamlessly. We never have interoperability issues.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Overall, it is a solid product and a good router."
"It handles stress very well. We have not reached a point of needing to worry about its capabilities."
"The most valuable feature is the artificial intelligence assessment models."
"AWS has a reference architecture to enable the Cisco routers in high availability and Transit VPC. This is a very powerful router and can enable us to use Transit VPC in AWS, and this is a very powerful feature that we use."
"This solution is scalable."
"The most important feature is that it is designed for mobile vehicle communication in harsh conditions."
"It is definitely scalable. It can handle a lot more traffic and group work compared to any other products that I've evaluated. It could easily scale a lot more than what I'm doing right now."
"The most valuable feature is the SNMP traps that I use to monitor the router and the availability of the network."
"The stability of Juniper is better than Cisco's."
"Juniper's custom Trio chipset drives their MX routers, offering superior performance. Juniper's design separates the control plane and the forwarding plane, which is a key aspect of their architecture. This separation provides high throughput, maintaining line-rate performance across the MX platform."
"The full Internet DGP is a valuable feature."
"The functionality and stability are great."
"Juniper Enterprise Routers is very flexible."
"Users are able to easily configure the whole solution via simple data."
"The most valuable feature is the standard routing protocol."
"We are able to easily build chassis with Juniper MX Series Routers."

Cons

"Cisco Cloud Services Router could improve the GUI."
"It does the job, but it's not cloud native. It could be even better, like having a single pane of glass and being less expensive."
"They have an online registration that happens after they pick up block months. If they could decrease to yearly or something, sometimes the device is not cell phone accessible. That becomes an issue or challenge for us. If that can be improved, that would be really great."
"I would like the ability to moderate between devices on-premise to off-premise. This would be a vast improvement."
"If you lose connectivity to the cloud, it is difficult to establish connectivity between hub and spoke."
"It could grow or adapt to changes in the cloud. For example, cloud does not support autoscaling. When people want to grow, they have to do manual activities."
"I would like some deployment examples and guides specific to AWS VPCs and how to separate your subnets. Then, how they tie-in with the Internet gateway and any NAT services that we are running on our VPC. This would be extremely helpful."
"The ease of use within the AWS environment needs to improve. Sometimes, it is very esoteric in how you use it. Therefore, you have to learn to use it, then you are able to."
"Finding market expertise is hard."
"In terms of what could be improved, they could extend the software warranty to be for its lifetime, as well. At the moment, the software warranty is limited, I think to one year."
"The pricing is a bit too high."
"Juniper have addressed issues with the MX204, but it still has a limited number of interfaces. Ideally, it should support up to twenty or twenty-four interfaces to better serve smaller service providers. Additionally, the MX304 doesn't support subscriber management, also known as BNG, which I believe should be included."
"The integration could be better."
"It is not scalable, unfortunately."
"There is room for improvement in pricing. The product could be cheaper for smaller networks."
"Enhancing the capacity would be a welcome improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is good for what it offers."
"We never buy the product on the AWS Marketplace. We only download it. We always use BYOL. We never buy the license in the AWS Marketplace, because it's very expensive."
"This solution is kind of expensive."
"The product is too expensive on the AWS Marketplace."
"The price is a little high, more than what we wanted to pay. This is one area where we would like to understanding how the price could be brought down a bit more."
"Cisco Cloud Services Router is an expensive product. My company pays for the product yearly, and the price reaches roughly $800,000. Though Cisco Cloud Services Router is expensive and its competitors offer better pricing, when it comes to support, it's unbeatable."
"Purchasing through the AWS Marketplace was easy. It was almost a one-click process to purchase CSR."
"Purchasing it through the AWS Marketplace was very simple. We went through the AWS Marketplace because it was the easiest way to get the product up and running very quickly."
"The pricing of Juniper MX Series Routers is okay compared to other technologies."
"An additional license can be purchased for support of a next-generation firewall."
"We have to pay for the device and licensing. The support service requires additional costs."
"I would rate it around a three. While I'm not deeply involved in pricing discussions, I believe it is comparatively more affordable than Cisco."
"The solution is more expensive compared to other solutions."
"There is a license for this solution and the price is very competitive. The cost is less expensive than some competitors, such as Cisco. There are additional costs for support licenses."
"The price of this solution is better than other competitors, such as Cisco. We receive a lot of discounts which make the price less expensive and attractive."
"$300 to $400 is the hardware cost and for licensing cost, it may be around, for support and all, $100 per year."
