A stable solution with an intuitive interface and quick customer service
I have been working with Fortinet FortiGate, WatchGuard, Sophos, and SonicWall. I'm not as comfortable with SonicWall because of their UI and limitations. I prefer Fortinet above all other options. When it comes to configuration, I am confident in my ability to handle various tasks, including creating policies such as firewall rules, web policies, and application policies. Additionally, I can configure VPNs and implement load balancing, among other tasks. Overall, I feel much more comfortable working with Fortinet. Fortinet has made significant improvements by integrating AI with firewalls for threat analysis and prevention. In the past 2-3 years, they have launched FortiSASE and SIEM, and they also provide SOC services. Both Palo Alto and Fortinet FortiGate are excellent. While Fortinet FortiGate comes at higher prices, the functionality and support justify the cost. They promptly resolve firmware issues and inform all support providers about configuration changes.

Unified policies streamline network management but complex licensing requires attention
Cisco Secure Firewall has some growth opportunities in terms of visibility and control capabilities regarding managing encrypted traffic. It has the ability to analyze encrypted traffic, and there is potential for more integration with APIs and AI to enhance these capabilities. Cisco Secure Firewall needs improvement in deployment time and the capability to access the CLI during support calls. I often encounter issues when technical support uses a CLI that is not familiar to me while troubleshooting through the GUI. My ongoing complaint for the last six years has been the lack of CLI functionality, which hinders my ability to work on the firewall, alongside concerns regarding deployment time. For the next release, they should look at the features offered by competitors such as Fortinet, including the ability to perform packet capture directly from the interface. If they enhanced their troubleshooting efficiency related to packet capture for each specific rule, it would simplify the process significantly.

User-Friendly, improves security, and gives me more control over my VoIP
We purchased the solution and we are partners. I haven't had a chance to go through all of the features and what this solution offers, but I think that it has an integrated VPN. I am looking forward to using another VPN. I am anxious to see it, as we are going to set that up for one of the clients. At this time, I am not able to add any comments on how this solution can be improved, because this solution does what it is asked to do. I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Allows for firewall rules to be programmed and named in a way that makes it “readable”"
"The payment function for applications is good."
"The interface is very good."
"The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate IPS are firewall and filtering."
"The IPS and the application control feature are the most valuable."
"The performance is good."
"The solution is user-friendly and easy to operate."
"Secure, user-friendly, stable, and scalable network security solution. Installation is straightforward."
"ASA integrates with FirePOWER, IPS functionality, malware filtering, etc. This functionality wasn't there in the past. With its cloud architecture, Cisco can filter traffic at the engine layer. Evasive encryptions can be entered into the application, like BitTorrent or Skype. This wasn't possible to control through a traditional firewall."
"I have not had one Cisco Secure Firewall fail so far, which shows it is stable and reliable."
"They provide DDoS protection and multi-factor authentication. That is a good option as it enables work-from-home functionality."
"I like the Cisco ASDM (Adaptive Security Device Manager), which is the configuration interface for the Cisco firewall."
"The most important feature is the intensive way you can troubleshoot Cisco Firepower Firewalls. You can go to the bit level to see why traffic is not handled in the correct way, and the majority of the time it's a networking issue and not a firewall issue. You can solve any problem without Cisco TAC help, because you can go very deeply under the hood to find out how traffic is flowing and whether it is not flowing as expected. That is something I have never seen with other brands."
"The important features are IPS intrusion prevention, anti-malware, and anti-spam."
"URL filtering is valuable."
"We are mostly using it for remote access, so the remote access feature is the most valuable, but all other features are also needed and required. It is also a very straightforward and reliable solution."
"This solution is user-friendly."

Cons

"While the security is good, we'd always prefer if it was even better to ensure protection."
"The solution needs to improve its support."
"Overall, the integration could be better."
"We called them for a geolocation issue and we didn't get any proper assistance."
"The initial setup is complex."
"There is one big configuration file with no separations for the unique VDOMs. Maybe they could separate individual VDOM configuration files with the root VDOM configuration file referencing the individual VDOM config files."
"Compared to some other products, the DLP is not at par for the moment."
"Regarding stability, I have experienced performance issues with Fortinet FortiGate. Sometimes it does not work correctly in certain situations, such as DNS or URL categories, where it might block incorrectly."
"The security features in the URL category need more improvement."
"The management of the firewalls could be improved because there are a lot of bugs."
"They should work on making it a little more intuitive for users and not quite as complex. Still, it's a good product."
"There are always vulnerabilities that come up and there was one in early 2018 but this was patched with software updates."
"There used to be information displayed about the packets in a module called Packet Flow, but it is no longer there."
"Critical bugs need to be addressed before releasing the version."
"In the future, I would like to be able to use an IP phone over a VPN connection."
"It's not unexpected, but it's a common scenario where customers request dual layers of security. For instance, when dealing with regulatory compliance, especially in financial sectors regulated by entities like the Central Bank, having two distinct units is often mandated. If a client predominantly uses a solution like Palo Alto, they may need to incorporate another vendor such as Cisco or Forti. Importantly, there's a significant disparity in interfaces and management platforms between these vendors, necessitating careful consideration when integrating them into the overall security architecture"
"I haven't seen any feature that will allow me direct authentication for a VPN solution."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Fortinet is competitive price-wise."
"Fortigate's pricing is competitive."
"The pricing is flexible."
"Fortinet FortiGate is reasonably priced."
"The tool is a bit pricey for small businesses, but it is still bearable in terms of cost."
"Fortinet is reasonable in pricing and licensing. Overall, FortiGate is affordable. The licensing fee can be a little high, depending on the budget for your project."
"Other firewalls are more expensive than Fortinet FortiGate, such as the Azure firewall."
"I would rate pricing to be about four or five out of ten, it is reasonable."
"It definitely competes with the other vendors in the market."
"Its price is moderate. It is not too expensive."
"The pricing and licensing structure of the firewall is fair and reasonable."
"When we purchased the firewall, we had to take the security license for IPS, malware protection, and VPN. If we are using high availability, we have to take a license for that. We also have to pay for hardware support and technical support. Its licensing is on a yearly basis."
"Licensing with Cisco Secure Firewall isn't too difficult. However, pricing seems high. We had been using a Meraki solution, and Cisco Secure Firewall seems more expensive than Meraki, even though Meraki is also cloud-based."
"The pricing is fair compared to competitors."
"Cisco is not really cheap, but there is great technology behind it."
"The licensing models that are available for Cisco Secure Firewall are okay. You have nearly every option that you need. You can pick filtering, advanced malware protection, or all the available features. It's sufficient. In terms of pricing, there are, for sure, some cheaper vendors, but overall, it's nearly the same. It has a fair price."
