Achieving seamless infrastructure management with optimized network and user access controls
I believe enhancements could be made in CloudStack, particularly in the management servers. I had the opportunity to collaborate with one of the Apache CloudStack developers, leading to the installation of additional agents for better information retrieval from hypervisors. We implemented configurations, ensuring consistency across hosts and VMs. We also utilized Ansible or YAML files to automate password upgrades during patching activities and database management, showcasing our customization efforts for improvement. For future releases, it would be beneficial if Apache enhanced CloudStack by integrating alerting systems directly. We've had instances where hypervisors experienced overloads without prior alerts, so proactive alerts within the tool would better prepare us for addressing issues swiftly, preventing disruption in business operations. A portal summarizing system metrics alongside alert capabilities would greatly enhance our operational efficiency.

Extensive tool features support database monitoring, but support and pricing present challenges
I don't fully understand what improvements could be made in Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control. To make it better, more features could be added, but it is already a very complete tool, especially if you know how to configure it properly, as you can use it to monitor other databases such as PostgreSQL and SQL Server in addition to Oracle.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"CloudStack is simple to stand up and get off the ground in a hurry. Its centralized design allows for easier troubleshooting when compared to OpenStack. Out of the box, it’s very well suited for white labeling and IaaS."
"We increased our IaaS sales by 30% and our deploy time of VM/instances has been reduced from one day to one minute."
"I have also explored setting up with OpenStack and I found it harder to use than CloudStack."
"We like the virtualization capabilities."
"Being able to completely virtualize a customer’s physical data center and migrate any workload into the cloud, and cover the most complex use cases - while offering high performance and true volume QoS, backed by SSD-based managed storage - is what differentiates it from other IaaS solutions."
"It was easy to deploy, both for PoC and production (with HA)."
"All our development is done on this environment because we deploy around 3,000 instances every day."
"In general I would say CS is a stable solution and, in my opinion, it will solve problems with administration of VMs."
"In summary, I would highly recommend this solution."
"There are lot of features in this product that I like, among them are that RMAN backup jobs can be created, and that all the database instances can be monitored from one place."
"I believe that one of the most valuable resources this tool has is the ability to check offending processes, which are burdening the hardware resources, and to generate advice quickly that can improve a query's performance."
"OEM is invaluable in many ways, other products can replace bits of it - but the product should be used as a single point from which to view as much of your enterprise as possible."
"Oracle support is always good."
"Real-time SQL, performance monitoring and SQL Tuning Advisor are the features that I use the most."
"From a performance perspective, the management capabilities of the product are very valuable to its customers."
"Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control gives us diverse monitoring capability that can be extremely powerful."

Cons

"For future releases, it would be beneficial if Apache enhanced CloudStack by integrating alerting systems directly. We've had instances where hypervisors experienced overloads without prior alerts, so proactive alerts within the tool would better prepare us for addressing issues swiftly, preventing disruption in business operations."
"The upgrade process can be improved further."
"Lack of support for third-party software vendors such as Veeam and Zerto creates limitations on comprehensive offerings which would include backup and disaster recovery."
"The area of Apache CloudStack that could stand the most improvement is the functionality/features around the virtual routers. They can be somewhat cumbersome to deal with at times and are the least stable piece of the product."
"The main reason why we started looking for another solution: backups, replication, HA, and dependency on secondary storage. CS is quite sensitive for infrastructure, and any kind of network disruption between CS and secondary storage leads to VM hanging."
"After Citrix divested CloudPlatform to Accelerite, commercial support was absolutely atrocious."
"Factors that need improvement are: Visualization in terms of the resources usage. The user interface. Providing best error feedback to the users."
"Environment is sensitive, so, unlike VMware, you can not afford middle-skilled engineers, they will ruin everything."
"As the number of databases increased, the tool got a bit slower. Its response time increased with larger number of databases."
"The product lacks in the area of database, making it an area where improvements are required."
"Adding new databases is difficult in Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control."
"Yes, there are some bugs. Some of the screens sometimes do not load data, and sometimes the portal hangs."
"The product does have room for improvement in patch management."
"The cost for the licenses needs to be improved because they are expensive and scare many customers away from Oracle."
"Because this solution provides insight into all of the areas within the IT stack, it would benefit from enhancements in security."
"The response time of the solution's technical support team is too long and should be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is open-source and free."
"Give an effort to planning. If possible, contract a specialized consultant company for the initial setup and knowledge transfer."
"CloudStack is an open source solution, so you don't need to pay anything for it. When our company develops something specially for CloudStack, it is donated to the Apache Software Foundation and provided to anyone that wants to use it."
"There is no license, so the product is free unless you are buying professional technical support services."
"It is a 100% open-source solution needing just an Apache license. Also, there are no hidden fees to be paid."
"CloudStack is an open-source product."
"The Apache CloudStack is open source, so you do not have licenses to purchase."
"As far as I know, CS is still free of charge. If you want to pay some money, Citrix Cloud Platform is based on CS, I think. As for hypervisors – everything as usual, you need to pay for VMware and vCenter. As for XenServer, recently they changed the free feature list, so you may need to pay some money to get useful features like XenMotion."
"I personally feel that the tool can be considered to be a little bit on the expensive side."
"The licensing costs are largely too high."
"We are using the free version. We are not using any licensed packages of Enterprise Manager, so I’m not quite sure how much each package is. As I understand it, there are different plug-ins that you need to buy for Enterprise Manager."
"it's neither expensive nor cheap."
"Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control is a little expensive."
"The solution's pricing is fine."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing a six out of ten."
"Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control is a pretty expensive solution but worth the money."
