Achieving seamless infrastructure management with optimized network and user access controls
I believe enhancements could be made in CloudStack, particularly in the management servers. I had the opportunity to collaborate with one of the Apache CloudStack developers, leading to the installation of additional agents for better information retrieval from hypervisors. We implemented configurations, ensuring consistency across hosts and VMs. We also utilized Ansible or YAML files to automate password upgrades during patching activities and database management, showcasing our customization efforts for improvement. For future releases, it would be beneficial if Apache enhanced CloudStack by integrating alerting systems directly. We've had instances where hypervisors experienced overloads without prior alerts, so proactive alerts within the tool would better prepare us for addressing issues swiftly, preventing disruption in business operations. A portal summarizing system metrics alongside alert capabilities would greatly enhance our operational efficiency.

Improves cloud cost control and accountability but could explore further enhancements
The most valuable features of this solution include the drive for accountability because we can allocate cloud costs back to specific business units or teams through showback and chargeback. Additionally, reduced waste is achieved because we can identify unused or underutilized resources and receive recommendations for resizing instances. VMWare Tanzu CloudHealth's unified dashboard helps streamline cloud management practices by unifying everything needed in one dashboard, such as metrics, instance workings, machines, and servers. All of this in just one dashboard is very helpful to improve agility and resolve issues, especially for the workloads. VMWare Tanzu CloudHealth helps manage compliance risks by preventing threats, stopping attacks, detecting threats, and securing workloads or endpoints where customers will be using the endpoints. The positive impact on my organization is substantial because we can reduce waste, optimize expenses, drive accountability, and secure the budget from unnecessary cloud costs.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"CloudStack manages infrastructure with 2-4 thousands of hosts easily."
"Multiple types of hypervisor support, multi-zone support, and VPC are great valuable features."
"We increased our IaaS sales by 30% and our deploy time of VM/instances has been reduced from one day to one minute."
"Cloud computing has improved the way our organization functions."
"If you are looking for a stable product that is easy to install with a lot of documentation, a portal that is very easy to understand and manage and that can be modified, you should use CloudStack."
"CloudStack has greatly helped integrate our existing infrastructure because we manage a massive cloud platform with thousands of VMs and around 1,200 to 1,500 hypervisors."
"The API with CloudStack made integration into various external facing web applications simple enough."
"Everything in CloudStack works effectively."
"We are able to create an internal price of the product that we can then sell to clients. We get the cost plan at a good discount and then resell it with a mark up to our enterprise-level clients. This flexibility in pricing is one of the solution's best features."
"Overall, it's one of the best products because it's easy to use and has a great dashboard."
"It's one of our core tools within our Zones Cloud Platforms tool bag, when we're looking at how we help customers optimize their cloud spend across their Azure and AWS environments today."
"It's stable. For report presentation, it's been fast."
"Compared to AWS, the historic data on CloudHealth is a lot more helpful."
"The product is easy to use in terms of monitoring all the environments. It works for multiple clouds."
"The pricing is rather competitive right now."
"The most valuable thing I have found is the cost saving recommendations."

Cons

"More integration with third-party products (we know that OpenStack has a better level of integration)."
"The stability is problematic, in part, because there is no support."
"CloudStack lacks a billing solution which would complete it as a full 360-degree product."
"It is not widely used so Google does not help very much when you are troubleshooting, and the CloudStack forum is not very active."
"The user can't upload SSH keys from the UI. We have to use the API for this, and it is not always convenient."
"The Windows hosts do not get their hostnames from cloud-init."
"My teammates have complained about the upgrade. The source code had massive files that had to be merged with our own development to upgrade to the latest version of CloudStack. It was quite painful for them. CloudStack could add some cost management tools to give me some control over the costs associated with the number of users of my services."
"The absence of the feature, deploy an instance from a snapshot, is the weak point of the platform. It is a feature that everyone needs nowadays."
"I would like to see better integration from CloudHealth to create an easier setup and implementation."
"The performance and accuracy of Cloud Health need to be improved."
"CloudHealth needs to start building out Turbonomics-types of features that help the customers who are using CloudHealth really understand everything down to the server level, the virtual machine level."
"When you start to virtualize things it gets very expensive."
"The export features regarding CSV files and specifically around identifying savings plans have room for improvement, as well as the drill-down features for reservation utilization."
"CloudHealth doesn't have that capability; they can't reach down to that level right now."
"If you are working with the OS you need help and other connectors to get more information."
"The solution doesn't offer the best functionality, unfortunately. Some features just simply aren't on offer. The solution needs to offer more product milestones."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is open-source and free."
"As far as I know, CS is still free of charge. If you want to pay some money, Citrix Cloud Platform is based on CS, I think. As for hypervisors – everything as usual, you need to pay for VMware and vCenter. As for XenServer, recently they changed the free feature list, so you may need to pay some money to get useful features like XenMotion."
"The Apache CloudStack is open source, so you do not have licenses to purchase."
"CloudStack is an open-source product."
"There is no license, so the product is free unless you are buying professional technical support services."
"CloudStack is an open source solution, so you don't need to pay anything for it. When our company develops something specially for CloudStack, it is donated to the Apache Software Foundation and provided to anyone that wants to use it."
"It is a 100% open-source solution needing just an Apache license. Also, there are no hidden fees to be paid."
"Give an effort to planning. If possible, contract a specialized consultant company for the initial setup and knowledge transfer."
"There could be flexibility in pricing for the product."
"CloudHealth has a subscription-based model."
"The pricing is competitive and while other products are good they are considerably more expensive."
"The licensing fees depend on how big the company is. If you are a larger company then you have a better contract with a better price. The price is different for a small company."
"I give the cost of the solution an eight out of ten."
