Faster and more efficient than manual methods or other tools like Informatica
The main differences between Collibra Lineage and Informatica are significant, particularly for small to mid-sized organizations. First, Informatica requires a dedicated team, which incurs a huge cost, making it less suitable for smaller organizations. Second, Informatica's tools are very scattered. For instance, to create a domain, you need to use Axon, and then for lineage, you must use EDC. For profiling, Informatica Developer or Analyst is required. These different tools are not well-connected to display everything on one screen. While Informatica is trying to improve with its cloud version, not many users have adopted it yet. These are the two main areas where Informatica lags.

The sensitivity and retention options in Purview are excellent
Some of the menu headings may not be easy to understand for some people. For example, when I first used Purview, I noticed that one of the self-compliance centers had changed its name. Microsoft has done a huge amount of updates, and sometimes it's hard to keep track of what Purview can do. We almost constantly have to explore it. Maybe Microsoft could have a 365 roadmap where we can look at upcoming features, or some kind of bulletin announcement for Purview users that explains new features and what they can do in simple terms. We could also look at the menu settings. In my experience of using Purview, we've never used it as an exclusive system for IT professionals or technical staff. We were very keen that other specialists around the business made use of some of these features because we thought that some of what Purview could do was relevant to other departments as well as IT. For example, we have HR managers and financial staff who use it. I think that some of the terminology in Purview is pitched toward IT and tech professionals, and it may not be immediately understood by other specialists. This is something that could be improved.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The diagrams are good for data visualization."
"The solution allowed us to quickly and efficiently implement our data governance operating model, including accountabilities, regulatory lineage, and data dictionaries. This was much faster and more efficient than manual methods or other tools like Informatica. I prefer Collibra Lineage for its self-service capabilities."
"We find the most valuable feature of this solution to be the lineage aspect."
"It shows how the data was transformed on the way and how the solutions were derived. This is the essence of the tool and why it is so powerful."
"The solution makes data more discoverable and transparent."
"The solution has very good online assistance."
"The most valuable features of Collibra Lineage are the multiple options for automation. Additionally, if you have a scenario where automation does not work, you have the option to manually create the lineage. The solution does not force you to always go through an automated way where you have broken lineage and you are stuck without a lineage."
"Microsoft Purview offers data protection across a multi-cloud and multi-platform environment."
"One of the best features is the classification rules, especially the scan rule sets. They are really useful, especially when we need to understand the current data the company has to ensure that all the problematic data can be put under someone's responsibility."
"It is designed to seamlessly connect to various data sources, which is particularly beneficial for our customers who primarily use Microsoft technologies."
"The cataloging tool is definitely the most valuable... It tells you about all the data you have in your tables, which helps people understand our data. We now know what data we have."
"I really like the entire system for auto-labeling content. It's a very refined system. I use the Keyword Query Language to define refined string-based metadata, and then I can really go deep into the specific data with the specific properties labeled in such and such a way."
"The most valuable aspect of Purview is its PowerShell connectivity, enabling automation."
"The data protection feature is vital as it controls who can access data when it moves out of our protected boundary."
"It's certainly easy to work with all Microsoft data sources like SQL Server, Synapse, and data lakes, but it also has great functionality working with Oracle. And of particular interest to us is the ability to pull data from Excel, CVS files, and other types of flat files."

Cons

"Collibra Lineage could improve connectively. If they can offer more out-of-the-box connectors, which come as in a package compared to you having to go and buy a lot in the marketplace for certain specific connectors."
"Before you can use this solution, you have to make a lot of changes to how you measure your information in your organization, the data governance and policies, and the organizational structures that use them. Many companies believe that if they purchase the licenses for the tool that they have done the job, but this is far from the case with this tool."
"Collibra doesn't provide support for integration for SAP Info Steward directly with Collibra."
"We would like this solution to be able to connect directly to the databases, so we can pull directly from Databank without manual intervention."
"The product must be cheaper."
"It would be better if features like the privacy module and AI-based Collibra DQ were included in one package instead of being separate and requiring additional costs. Currently, the basic package covers lineage and documentation, but the extra modules come at an extra cost."
"The workflow documentation must be improved."
"Auto-tagging should be available at lower levels of licensing. Right now, a high level of licensing is needed for auto-tagging, and this feature should be made available at a lower license level."
"Reflecting organizational changes within Purview is impractical."
"We are currently in the rollout phase, so I am not entirely sure about specific areas of improvement. However, there are some problems with DLP rules, and it would be great if the security around DLP could be expanded."
"I try to avoid opening tickets with Microsoft due to long response times, which is frustrating."
"In terms of the competence of the tools with the Microsoft ecosystem, the product can do better."
"One of the challenges is that Microsoft changes things so quickly that sometimes you're just playing catch-up, and sometimes these changes aren't communicated effectively."
"Frequent daily updates from Microsoft can cause interface elements like buttons to appear and disappear, making navigation unpredictable."
"Enhancing the tool's capability to connect to multiple sources would be valuable."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There are different licenses available for Collibra Lineage based on what kind of access you want. If you want, for example, a read-only license they have different ones to pick from."
"It's expensive, especially for small companies."
"Licensing is frustrating due to multiple modules and licenses. The feature might be available in the console, but it won't work without the proper license, creating confusion."
"The pricing is reasonable because it's part of the 365 E3 or E5 license you buy."
"Purview's price is pretty high when you factor in storage costs."
"It is cheap. It is based on consumption. If somebody wants to start using it, the price is definitely cheaper than a tool like Collibra."
"Aside from the complexity of the pricing model, the price itself is realistic. Features like AI components and automatic classification require additional licenses. Still, anyone can start using Purview with a basic E3 license if they're using Microsoft 365 and grow with additional licenses as needed. Overall, we're satisfied with the price."
"The pricing depends on the client's requirements and the number of applications."
"Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention is not cheap."
"To get the full features of Purview, we currently need E5 enterprise licenses, which are expensive."

Hi,There is not a default answer. It depends on your focus and your data source. If you are looking a data governance tool for Microsoft 365 or for Azure, Microsoft Purview should be the best because of the native integration.

These two are suites of 'tools' for metadata management. I would ask first that you list 'what' you are wanting to achieve with such tools.  Data Catalog?  Data Lineage?  Table level or Column level lineage? Data Quality detection, etc, etc. Your answers will be critical as you engage various vendors as each may say they do 'it all', but the reality is something less. Also, do you need to manage metadata across heterogeneous systems, just Azure, or others, because some tools are great if used on their 'native' platform, but not so great integrating with other platforms. You may also want to consider Quest/erwin Data Intelligence Suite. I have implemented this solution and it is one of the best. I would add that some tools tend to 'overwhelm' your users with all they can do. So be careful that whatever you bring in will not become 'shelf-ware'.
