Masked finance data has enabled compliant AI modeling and now needs better UX and virtualization
DataMasque can be improved by focusing on having a virtualization setup. Unlike heavy enterprise alternatives such as Delphix, DataMasque handles static masking but does not offer built-in data virtualization, thin provisioning, or rapid dynamic data masking, which is a disadvantage for us. Another area for improvement is the single instance development, as it lacks a distributed or native scale-out engine for massive multi-terabyte clusters, which can limit raw performance compared to distributed systems. If DataMasque works on this, it would be really great, provided that the cost does not increase significantly. The GUI and UX complexity can be made more simple and intuitive for non-technical users. I would add more about needed improvements by introducing native self-service portals because it actually builds a robust, role-based UI layer that lets developers, stakeholders, business analysts, or QA leads to request and spin up masked data securely without relying entirely on engineering writing of YAML rule sets. Expanding distributed performance scaling by implementing native parallel partitioning or scale-out execution runners to reduce processing times for ultra-large enterprise databases would be a game-changer for DataMasque. Enhanced out-of-the-box synthetic generators for advanced template-driven synthetic data generation for edge case scenarios where production data is sparse would also be beneficial. These three improvements would help DataMasque grow and prosper in the IT field. Regarding DataMasque's AI capabilities, I think its governance and security yet need to be included.

Automated lineage and business glossaries have improved data understanding and collaboration
I am open to answering a few questions about erwin Data Intelligence and sharing my opinion about the product. Regarding the analytic part of the product, I find it very interesting that erwin Data Intelligence has its own inbuilt reporting toolset, with a new version coming out in January that will be AI-powered. This means you will be able to write analytical reports and questions based on the metadata and data lineage, making it more powerful than the current version, as AI will assist in creating those reports and performing analysis on the metadata. I find that the time taken to realize value from erwin Data Intelligence can be quite long. Creating a data catalog and developing data lineage takes significant time, and I expect that AI will help accelerate the process of creating data products by streamlining the steps involved. I can recommend erwin Data Intelligence to other users. I would rate this review as an eight out of ten overall.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We were able to profile all 400+ databases in our environment, identify compliance data that was not known or identified previously and allow the teams a self-service option to restore to lower environments."
"Being able to generate the masking rules directly from the tool based on what it finds during the data discovery helps ensure that all sensitive fields are identified and masked."
"We can now have a staging environment very much like a production environment, which improves our testing and product quality."
"DataMasque has positively impacted our organization by already showing visible benefits in security and reduced risks for compliance, even though we are still in the process of setting up production and using it to the full extent."
"The resulting data set always remains mathematically and structurally valid, which is really amazing."
"The data mapping manager is the most valuable feature."
"There is a wide range of widgets that enables the user to find the proper information quickly. The presentation of information is something very valuable."
"The biggest impact for us is that erwin generates DDL extremely quickly. We're able to pull in metadata, map it to a target, generate DDL to create the tables, and generate SSIS packages. Previously, especially going back 10 to 15 years ago, hundreds of hours had to be spent to manually perform these tasks. This solution completely automates it and gets it 90% done. We can then pass it off to a developer to create the items in SSIS."
"The data management is, obviously, key in understanding where the data is and what the data is. And the governance can be done at multiple levels. You have the governance of the code sets versus the governance of the business terms and the definitions of those business terms. You have the governance of the business data models and how those business data models are driving the physical implementation of the actual databases. And, of course, you have the governance of the mapping to make sure that source-to-target mapping is done and is being shared across the company."
"This tool has taken us from having nothing to being very efficient."
"When you combine it with data lineage, every time you need to make a change, it allows you to do impact analysis on any changes and then connect to the end-users or data stewards so that they can be aware that a change is coming. That's one of the main benefits we use it for."
"We use the codeset mapping quite a bit to match value pairs to use within the conversion as well. Those value pair mappings come in quite handy and are utilized quite extensively. They then feed into the automation of the source data extraction, like the source data mapping of the source data extraction, the code development, forward engineering using the ODI connector for the forward automation."
"By using the data catalog, we have definitely improved in terms of maturity as a data-driven decision-maker organization, and we are now getting to a level where everybody understands the data, understands how it is organized, and how they can use this data for different business decisions."

Cons

"DataMasque can be improved by focusing on having a virtualization setup. Unlike heavy enterprise alternatives such as Delphix, DataMasque handles static masking but does not offer built-in data virtualization, thin provisioning, or rapid dynamic data masking, which is a disadvantage for us."
"UUID generation could be improved."
"Scalability has room for improvement. It tends to slow down when we have large volumes of data, and it takes more time."
"If we are talking about the business side of the product, maybe the Data Literacy could be made a bit simpler. You have to put your hands on it, so there is room for improvement."
"The fact that I sometimes have to go in and out of different applications, even though it's all part of the whole erwin suite, perhaps means it could be architected a little bit better. I think they do have some ideas for improvements there."
"I find that the time taken to realize value from erwin Data Intelligence can be quite long."
"The solution's Arabic language processing is limited. The results are limited when you use the interface in Arabic."
"We still need another layer of data quality assessments on the source to see if it is sending us the wrong data or if there are some issues with the source data. For those things, we need a rule-based data quality assessment or scoring where we can assess tools or other technology stacks. We need to be able to leverage where the business comes in, defining some business rules and have the ability to execute those rules, then score the data quality of all those attributes. Data quality is definitely not what we are leveraging from this tool, as of today."
"There are a lot of little things like moving between read screens and edit screens. Those little human interface type of programming pieces will need to mature a bit to make it easier to get to where you want to go to put the stuff in."
"It's a little bit clunky. I think a lot of these features were bolted on, and they don't necessarily transition smoothly in the interface. I would like to see a little more cohesion."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"erwin is cheaper than other solutions and this should appeal to other buyers. It has a good price tag."
"Erwin Data Catalog is very expensive."
"The whole suite, not just the DI but the modeling software, the harvester, Mapping Manager — everything we have — is about $100,000 a year for our renewals. That works out to each module being something like $8,000 to $10,000."
"I am not very familiar with its pricing. I know it is not cheap, but it is also not super expensive. It depends on the company size. For a company making $1 million, it is very expensive. For a company making 10 million and above, it might be okay."
"You buy a seat license for your portal. We have 100 seats for the portal, then you buy just the development licenses for the people who are going to put the data in."
"The licensing cost is around $7,000 for user. This is an estimation."
"Smart Data Connectors have some costs, and then there are user-based licenses. We spend roughly $150,000 per year on the solution. It is a yearly subscription license that basically includes the cost for Smart Data Connectors and user-based licenses. We have around 30 data stewards who maintain definitions, and then we have five IT users who basically maintain the overall solution. It is not a SaaS kind of operation, and there is an infrastructure cost to host this solution, which is our regular AWS hosting cost."
"The price is too high."
