Consolidates tools and streamlines cross-platform database work
There is not a lot that I have to complain about with DbVisualizer. Over the years, as I have mentioned, they have continued to enhance the interface and the databases that are supported, but I do not think there is a lot of room for improvement. Most improvements will come from changes in the marketplace, such as new database features that need to be interacted with or perhaps more support for new data types and databases that are going to be supporting AI. Some of that, as we have seen thus far, is not necessarily the game changer that we would have thought. Integrating a co-pilot for SQL queries would be an interesting feature in the future.

Centralized monitoring has simplified multi-database oversight and improved query analysis
Foglight for Databases is very useful; however, the negative side we face is that customer care support is not frequent. If any issues related to Foglight arise, we cannot reach customer care support as soon as possible. It takes much longer compared to other third-party tools, and that is a major issue we are facing with Foglight for Databases. Foglight for Databases is good for monitoring, and we can fetch problematic issues and queries. However, the only main drawback is the customer care support. It is available only during the general shift, so if any issue occurs after 6:00 p.m. or before 9:00 a.m., there is usually no one to handle it. I think there are only two or three people handling customer care for Foglight for Databases.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"DbVisualizer is invaluable to me because it allows me to work from enterprise database systems like Oracle to more emerging database providers like CockroachDB, and can scale to anything up or down from SQLite or standard PostgreSQL."
"Timed SQL execution and real-time graphs are the killer features."
"Timed queries that add their result to the result grid for every execution are helpful."
"For over 10 years I have been a frequent DbVisualizer user, it is very comfortable and has some features not found in any other SQL tool."
"Actions like exporting grids to Excel or other tools is a very easy task."
"Foglight is also able to help the DBAs proactively fix problems before they become an issue. It provides them with real-time activity screens that help in this regard. The DBAs are able to go to these screens and look at what's happening in real time, and that buys them time. It helps them see problems ahead of time and find solutions to them."
"The alarms alert proactively if there are any potential or ongoing issues with the databases that we support. That means we can take preventive or corrective action before the issue becomes a big issue. And the SQL PI features enable us to drill down into performance issues in our databases so that we can improve performance, which is important."
"In that context, Foglight has been pretty spectacular in terms of the number of times I have been able to answer questions that nobody could answer before."
"Foglight's Change Tracking capabilities are another huge feature. It is wonderful to be able to do that. People don't realize the amount of information that Foglight gathers from a given server or instance. It gets down to the version of SQL, the disk array, everything that's there. Any change that's made, any upgrade to SQL, shows up on the dashboard almost immediately. You don't know how much time you save just having a tool in your back pocket that does that for you."
"It can save time and effort when doing root cause analysis. It enables me to obtain information quicker and easier compared to manually compiling it."
"Foglight for Databases allows us to save up to four months of data, enabling us to track performance data for at least one quarter."
"We can visualize all the different types of DB servers that we are monitoring in a single pane of glass. It uses a 360-degree overview of the database, for each of those databases that we are monitoring. That includes what kind of resource utilization is happening and what kind of DB parameters are getting monitored, as well as the different types of DB parameters that are being offered for each database type."
"Foglight offers a lot of out-of-the-box, database-related metrics, which the DB teams here are looking for."

Cons

"One thing I would like to see changed is having the JDBC drivers in a fixed location outside of the application package."
"Sometimes, I feel that the startup time takes a bit more time than needed."
"Better communication and alerts regarding the transaction logs getting full would also be beneficial. What I have noticed is that if the log files on the SQL server are full, we cannot log in and have to do some cleanup on the Foglight DB. It would be good if they could monitor that and alert us when it is getting too full."
"Over this past weekend I had 400 emails from Foglight. That's a lot. And at least 395 of them were white noise."
"I get a lot of alerts that, while important, are not critical. Then I have to dig in and figure out how to turn alerts off, but not the logging. I want to be able to go back, once we get the other big issues out of the way, and start fine-tuning some of those other areas, but I don't necessarily want to receive an email for all of them."
"I do not like the OS monitoring part of it much."
"Quest must release a Spanish version. That's critical because not everyone speaks English in Latin America. It's an excellent product, so it's super important that they offer the application and customer service in Spanish."
"Foglight for Databases could benefit from fewer generic alerts and more rules based on impact, priority, and action path, which would make it more useful for daily operations, on-call shifts, and incident follow-up."
"With the latest version, we have had many crashes, sometimes it stops working entirely, and it can take days to restart the service."
"Overall, I am happy with the product, but there are a few areas where it could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing for DbVisualizer is fair."
"A license with a few years of support is a good and valuable option."
"The price is worth it, if you have the time to go through the information."
"Pricing is very reasonable. We were able to construct a pretty easy contract with Quest, who were very easy to work with and very amenable to what we are trying to do. It worked out well for us."
"Compared to the other tools on the market, Foglight is okay in terms of pricing and licensing."
"It is cost-effective. With our EA, it is really based on the scale of our database environment. We found the Quest team to be reasonable and flexible when it comes to pricing and scaling of licenses."
"The price of Foglight could be a little more competitive in Chile, and it should be lowered for long-time customers— at least by 20 percent. Sometimes the price is a limitation. We have seven instances and nearly 5 million users. If Quest Foglight could reduce its prices for the clients that have been with it for a long time, we would be able to have more instances."
"This is like the "Cadillac" of performance monitoring software. It's not cheap... I am currently with a company that I was able to convince that the product is worth the cost."
