Relied on consistent support and efficient hardware to streamline engineering test environments
Currently, it is sometimes challenging when a component gets out of fashion or is no longer available at end of life, to quickly get a drop-in replacement. I would appreciate an XE version of the server where we have some drop-in replacements lined up beforehand, and we already know how to validate them. Right now, when this happens, we have about three months to validate the new systems, and that is usually a little short notice for us. I am already happy we get the time we get. I do have something to say about customer service and support. From time to time, we need to get special licenses or extended warranties or other items, especially for end customers. I think that could be streamlined. Right now, there is a human factor in it; there is not a click and buy option. This could save Dell some time to iterate that as well. If we have a technical question, it can take a little time, especially if we are trying to reach the Dutch support line. Usually, we still get redirected to a UK representative, which is acceptable because I speak English, but some of our customers are a little less happy. It would be beneficial if there were more local technical support. All of our questions get answered usually within a day or two, which I consider pretty quick. If it is high priority or critical, it gets answered within a couple of hours.

Simple to use and compatible with all other operating systems
I would rate the scalability of this solution a 10, on a scale from one to 10, with one being the worst and 10 being the best. There are currently about 2,000 users of this solution in our company as it's a hospital. We also have plans to scale further.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature is reliability. We rarely have any issues and because of this, Dell is our go-to for servers."
"However, I have had very good experiences with Dell systems, and the price-performance ratio has always been great."
"I rate Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers 10 out of 10. Nothing we have tested has been better."
"Their support is very good and very effective."
"The initial setup is very good, not complex at all."
"They have superior customer support compared to Supermicro, which does not cater to enterprise-level needs."
"The feature of Dell PowerEdge R-Series that I appreciate the most is the flexibility, the expansions, and the resiliency—these features benefit my company because fewer hardware problems result in more uptime for the users, which helps everyone in a 24/7 operational environment."
"I would describe my experience with Dell's support for PowerEdge solutions as great, as we had to get a motherboard replaced, and the replacement part arrived the next business day, which was impressive."
"The most valuable thing about Huawei FusionServer is the fact that it's easy to use."

Cons

"There are sometimes challenges with maintenance renewal, particularly with responsiveness, which sometimes takes a long time before we get feedback."
"I would prefer more flexibility when configuring Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers. Some challenges we see when looking for a server include wanting a two CPU server without necessarily needing a larger server."
"There is room for improvement in technical support."
"It is hard to make a comparison without any technical factsheets for the other servers to compare with but like everyone else, it is about the pricing."
"PowerEdge is not that flexible. For example, it's difficult if I need something that is not in Dell's portfolio. We offer the flexibility to the customer. We can implement different things Dell doesn't have. If you have preconfigured systems, it's hard to transition them to what you need."
"The specs for the benchmarks are very good, but the firmware and software are lacking. There are some issues with the Linux kernel and the long-term support (LTS) for some of the firmware's dependencies. It is causing the kernel to dump. The support for the Linux brands isn't optimal. We would like them to optimize the kernel drivers for benchmarks."
"Dell PowerEdge R-Series could improve by focusing the servers to optimize their performance for Kubernetes clusters or something similar might be beneficial."
"Currently, it is sometimes challenging when a component gets out of fashion or is no longer available at end of life, to quickly get a drop-in replacement."
"In the next release, I'd like to see more features not in the hardware but in the platform where I can manage all the servers and the hardware of the servers."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is very good because there are a lot of types of PowerEdge Rack Servers. You have the R540, R640, and R740. The prices are very scalable through the specific server, e.g., small businesses can take the R640 while large businesses can take the R740 or R840. Thus, Dell technologies touch on every organization."
"The pricing for PowerEdge servers is reasonable."
"I personally think the pricing and licensing of Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers is actually fairly decent, though the way the business runs leads to sticker shock anytime we give them a quote."
"The solution's prices are good, especially considering what you get to use...The licensing aspect of the solution is also fine."
"We have not compared them with others. The price is okay, but they can always be a little bit cheaper."
"The more complex the server requirements, the more expensive it gets."
"PowerEdge is not a cheap product. It's a quality product, but there is always competition. If you want to buy a server, you need an operating system, and most of it is Microsoft. A bundled solution costs less than a separate operating system and hardware."
"The tool's pricing is very good."
