Provides seamless backup integration and long-term reliability for enterprise data protection
The price is quite high; this product is not considered cheap. Additionally, if you use higher availability boxes, they also come at a premium price. However, they provide business continuity, which is the main reason why companies invest in this solution. Tape is slow; when restoring several virtual machines or databases amounting to several terabytes, Dell PowerProtect Data Domain represents the fastest and most reliable solution, ensuring great integration with backup software. If a customer has limited budget constraints, they may opt for cheaper external storage comprised of just a bunch of disks and utilize it for backup, as backup is not a business-critical service. However, I see great value in Dell PowerProtect Data Domain because it is fully automated, features great integration with backup software, and provides good value for money. I would rate software support as a ten, while I would give hardware support a seven. I never give any product a perfect score; I think Dell PowerProtect Data Domain deserves a nine. The only minor problems are the certificate issue and the price. These certificate issues are quite rare and mainly arise when we forget to restart and upgrade the box for several years.

Custom alerts and rich performance metrics have improved server monitoring and storage planning
We use customizable alerts extensively with different services, because the exchange services are different from Active Directory or DNS or anything else. We have customizable alerts for each service. I do not use the historical data trends that predict future storage needs. Perhaps some of my colleagues use it, but I do not. I would like to see a focus on broadcast services in the future to make it better. Broadcast services, specifically TV broadcast services, would be valuable to us because we come from a broadcast technology background and would appreciate having some features related to that. I would rate this review as an eight out of ten.

Quotes from Members

Pros

"My favorite feature on Dell PowerProtect Data Domain is the deduplication capability, which is a particularly good feature to have."
"They're attempting to take backups from their backup solution, which has improved their overall scalability and storage efficiency because they transitioned from a traditional backup solution to a more advanced solution within the Veracode domain."
"The most valuable features of PowerProtect DD are the immutable storage and the AI scanning."
"We are very satisfied with this solution. It's easy to use and efficient."
"The data application compression is great."
"EMC is under the Dell technologies portfolio, and you've got one of the best technical support teams looking out for you."
"Most functionality is valuable with Dell PowerProtect Data Domain."
"It securely protects data against threats like Trojans."
"DO IT!!! You will not regret it."
"The initial setup is very straightforward."
"The performance metrics, especially for CPU and memory, and for the overall performance of the servers have been found most valuable."

Cons

"EMC is very expensive for small customers."
"The downside of PowerProtect's flexibility is that you have so many options. It can be a little confusing. It's like having a car with too many buttons on the dash. You can do so much with it, but it takes some time to learn what everything does."
"There needs to be better ease of use with like APIs and automation and things of that nature."
"To improve Dell PowerProtect Data Domain, I would suggest making it cheaper."
"I would not recommend this solution to others."
"The aspect we do not enjoy the most about Dell PowerProtect Data Domain is the staging configuration."
"We have some problems with backing up on the Power Platform. PowerServer is an IBM product, and it forces us to back up over LAN, which is not suitable for us."
"Their licensing matrix is confusing and is a feature they need to improve."
"The solution could always be more easily scalable."
"The number of similar alerts is the main area for improvement."
"Scalability is my sore spot."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Dell PowerProtect DD's pricing is expensive, and there is no option for perpetual licensing."
"Pricing is related to size. A lower range solution might be about $33,000. My customers use higher range versions with a price of around $100,000. That's the price for both the hardware and software."
"Its price is reasonable."
"There are many options in the pricing structure which can cause some confusion and necessitate the purchase of additional licensing."
"The pricing is cost-effective for the solution"
"We usually buy products at the end year, and the license is included."
"The cost is expensive."
