Local container testing has boosted development speed but still needs lower battery and memory use
The main thing that really frustrates me about Docker is how much battery power it consumes on a Macintosh. I really am not a fan of that, which leads me to not want to run Docker 24/7 because I do not want my laptop battery to be exhausted by Docker instances running or even the Docker CLI or UI being booted up. I tend to not have it running until I need it, and then I run it and close it. It would be really nice if it did not consume as much battery as it does currently. Docker can definitely be improved by reducing the battery and CPU load that it impacts on a Macintosh. If it were possible for me to run Docker without panicking about the battery running out, that would be excellent. I believe battery is the biggest issue with Docker. The other issue is memory. It seems to consume a lot of memory, and I am not a fan of that. This means that I need to have a really powerful, high-specification Macintosh with a lot of battery and a lot of memory for it to work reliably. I do not always have access to that. If Docker could consume less battery and less memory, that would be magnificent.

Effective cost management achieved with robust storage features but user experience and data management require improvements
HPE Ezmeral Container Platform is not user-friendly and has many parts that are more difficult than Cloudera. It is also a complex solution and has low features for data management. For example, it cannot make a data catalog or process data lineage without third-party support, which increases the cost for development.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The stability is excellent."
"Docker has relieved a lot of the pressure, including the fact that I no longer have to provide everything from scratch."
"The solution's most valuable feature is having containers independent of the operating system or environment."
"The most valuable feature is the simple containerization."
"This makes our publisher fast and our containers are isolated from each other."
"Docker allows you to run multiple virtual machines independently."
"The most valuable feature of Docker is that it revolutionized virtualization by providing a new approach with containers that completely nullified the time it used to take to deploy applications on virtual servers, resulting in deployment times that can be as quick as milliseconds, unless it is a heavy application, such as Java. Additionally, resource utilization has greatly improved with Docker, allowing for more resources to be allocated to other tasks. These are a few key features that make Docker a preferred choice."
"Containerization is the most valuable feature. I can communicate to the Docker containers using other containers."
"The stability of the HPE Ezmeral Container Platform is good, and I rate it an eight out of ten."
"If customers focus on primary apps or if they are using them for data science, this is a good solution."

Cons

"The solution could offer better documentation."
"I would love to have it available on Linux."
"Docker could improve by providing the ability to use the GPU for parallel processing. If there was the capability of using the GPU it would improve the machine learning that I want to use."
"We have found that it is not easy to install it into a Windows system."
"One of the challenges I face with Docker is debugging containers within the infrastructure. It can be tricky to debug applications inside containers, which is a common issue among developers. If easier tools or methods were available to debug applications within Docker containers, it would be very beneficial."
"The runtime and security could improve in Docker. Security is paramount in the cloud and important."
"The solution’s documentation could improve a bit."
"We are facing multiple issues with the solution's stability."
"The modernization in Ezmeral could be improved."
"HPE Ezmeral Container Platform is not user-friendly and has many parts that are more difficult than Cloudera. It is also a complex solution and has low features for data management."
"If a customer is focused on process automation or API usage, I would not recommend this solution, but it is good to use for Data Science."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution is an open-source technology and not a commercial product. However, you will have to pay sometimes. The tool's pricing depends on the vendor."
"The current cost for us is nothing as an open source."
"There is a license needed to use Docker."
"We use the open-source version."
"We are using the open-source version of the solution."
"The offering and service are quite free."
"For commercial use, it's about $30 per month. The license itself isn't expensive, but if there are many users, the price becomes high."
"It's an open-source solution, so it doesn't cost anything"
