Containerization has transformed how I run microservices for high-speed web and API workloads
The best features Docker on CentOS offers include its lightweight containers and fast startup. Whenever there was a scale-out required for the APIs, it was immediate, less than 10 seconds to boot up, which was very helpful for the microfinance services. The fast startup and lightweight containers of Docker on CentOS were very helpful because earlier when we used to have these APIs running on the EC2 instances, many instances were required for those services, even though the code was very small. We had to use many EC2 instances instead of using microservices or micro containers like Docker. When we moved to Docker, the scale-out was very fast and very helpful for the business. The boot time with Docker was very less compared to the EC2 instances because running on the EC2 instances required more boot time for the OS, and there was a long delay due to the script execution for a few seconds. Docker on CentOS has positively impacted my organization as it helped us grow the business, and the customer was very happy with the services, thus revolutionizing the business.

Has supported secure application hosting and reliable server management
I find the GUI to be good in Ubuntu Linux, and I appreciate the open SSH. The fact that it is free since it is open and open-source is why I appreciate it and feel it is secured. We have multiple different kinds of support related to Ubuntu Linux, including official support and other options. I am currently using laptops, desktops, and servers, and Ubuntu Linux supports all these devices. If I need it for Raspberry Pi or something similar, I can download another Linux distribution. Ubuntu Linux is scalable, especially for servers. We prefer using Ubuntu Linux Servers rather than Windows. The biggest advantage of Ubuntu Linux for me is that it is open-source, secured, and scalable.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Those features helped me specifically during my project by making it more stable since it used fewer resources, resulting in a cost-efficient deployment, as the machines that I deployed it on used less of the resources than I thought they needed."
"Docker on CentOS has improved my organization positively, as it is easy to operate and maintain, making it more flexible—you can change any service in the system, delete or remove the service port, and create new ones."
"Docker on CentOS has positively impacted my organization by improving our time to market."
"Docker on CentOS has positively impacted my organization as it helped us grow the business, and the customer was very happy with the services, thus revolutionizing the business."
"The biggest advantage of Ubuntu Linux for me is that it is open-source, secured, and scalable."
"You can do everything you need to do with a browser."
"If there is a virus going into the network, it has to pass through an Ubuntu server, which can't be infected by the virus. So, there are less viruses on our systems."
"The most valuable features are stability and updates. We are not using the interface, the interface of the OS, we are using it as the server. We actually sync it through SSH and we deploy our application, so we don't have access to do it. The updates are very helpful and the way they update their OS is very helpful."
"The solution is stable."
"The most valuable features are that it's free and that it is simple to use."
"The product is easy to use."
"It's great for security and it is very safe."

Cons

"I have not seen a return on investment because the deprecation made it so there was none, and if anything, the ROI would have been negative since money and time were spent using something that did not progress."
"To achieve a higher rating of 9 or 10, they might need more automation features."
"Docker on CentOS can be improved by being in sync with the OS updates."
"The solution has a bit of a learning curve. It's not too high, however, you do need to understand the solution to deploy it and work with it effectively."
"Ubuntu could be improved with more container integration and orchestration of those containers. We are looking to have more cloud-based solutions, like Docker, and container-based solutions, or Kubernetes-based solutions integrated with Ubuntu. Instead of going for VMs, we would like to have more container-based solutions on top of Ubuntu."
"Ubuntu is putting great efforts into making their platform a great hosting platform for Kubernetes and other related tools, but they are not addressing the challenges with what it takes to run Ubuntu in a large Windows-based environment."
"Lack of integration with other operating systems."
"There are some drivers that are not there encoded, however, I thought that was pretty normal. They could be more comprehensive."
"At times, it can be complex when we are trying to integrate or when we are trying to set up some features."
"The biggest improvement, which is also applicable to Linux in general, with Ubuntu Linux is getting things standardized as to where you're going to put your configuration files and how they're going to work. Package names also need to be improved so that the package name doesn't have any match with configuration file systems and things like that. Ubuntu is still better than some of the others, such as Red Hat Linux or CentOS."
"Ubuntu Linux could improve by having better documentation because sometimes their documentation is not very good."
