Offers robust out-of-the-box integrations and streamlines logging processes effortlessly
There are improvements needed for Elastic Stack. It is mostly based on Lucene, and the heart of Elastic Stack is Lucene, which has some limitations. Anything built on top of Lucene often feels an add-on, and that includes vector databases. Elastic Stack can store vector embeddings as well and perform AI and machine learning tasks out of the box without excessive configuration. The main improvements involve increasing speed and compression capabilities; I have seen databases that claim to achieve significantly better compression. While Elastic Stack can manage vast amounts of data, if the mapping is not specified correctly, the indexing time can be slow, especially with many events per second. Improper mapping usually means that every document received gets indexed for all fields, which is not desired. Elastic consultants typically optimize this, but out of the box, as data volume increases, scaling becomes necessary. They are working on these improvements in new versions.

Helps us detect cyber threats quickly and integrate multiple feeds effectively
Overall, the product is good, but when it comes to some infrastructure issues, we have to dig into more logs. There is no straightforward indication of an issue. Health check kind of dashboards are not available. More AI would help us, and more optimization, since security products run more queries. The AI module could suggest solutions, optimizing queries or workload balancing. If the product itself advises on running queries during peak times, it would be similar to what ChatGPT currently offers. We see quite a few issues on stability. Even last week, we faced something, and identifying bottlenecks is not easy. We need more SMEs, and there is no mechanism to tell us about indexer or search head issues. Self-monitoring dashboards could be beneficial. The technical support still requires more improvement. Often, primary support takes a lot of time and forwards most solutions to the engineering side. The primary support team has very limited knowledge to provide.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The centralized logging capabilities of Elastic Stack have helped me streamline my logging processes significantly because there are many open-source tools available, such as Filebeat and Logstash, to collect the logs."
"It is an excellent tool for monitoring purposes."
"I think the ecosystem is well supported, and for logs, it was faster compared to our previous previous log management."
"Prior to the latest updates, data lake management was a standout feature. The hybrid capability for on-premise and cloud integration was also crucial. Now, with Elastic Defense, the agent simplifies security monitoring, making it a key asset."
"The biggest strength of Elastic Stack is its brilliant archiving capabilities."
"I have benefited from the security features provided by X-Pack in Elastic Stack, particularly the SIEM capability, which is very good for checking security issues."
"It is a very scalable solution...I didn't face any problem with this scalability part of the solution since we only have a few pieces of equipment in our company."
"We can group a lot of alarms into one automation alarm supervision. The alarm supervision allows us to put the alarm under the same. It's quite helpful for us. We used that to suppress our alarms. Elastic already provides the agent. It is easy to integrate Elastic Stack with other devices and vendors."
"It has helped us look at modern technology, as well as penetrate our legacy systems, to see where the bottlenecks are."
"It's basically one of the best SIEM products on the market."
"This is a straightforward solution, easy to configure."
"The indexing and data collection are valuable."
"It has virtual visualization, and other products do not."
"The alerts are very effective."
"Scalability-wise, the tool is awesome since you can add or reduce your resources in an easy way."
"This solution helps us increase our productivity."

Cons

"Elastic Stack's search capabilities can be challenging, especially when searching for precise data from past years, such as two or ten years ago. Its indexing performance for exact data retrieval may decrease as the data volume grows. Therefore, I believe there is room for improvement in the product's search functionality. It needs to improve its pricing as well."
"The stability of the solution is rated as three or four out of ten as we frequently encounter issues."
"While Elastic Stack can manage vast amounts of data, if the mapping is not specified correctly, the indexing time can be slow, especially with many events per second."
"AI-enablement would be a big improvement in Elastic Stack...If there is room for an ML model in Elastic Stack, then it would be good."
"Support could be improved. The error code is not helpful. We have to ask for it or pass it on to community forums."
"There could be better documentation."
"The solution is expensive, particularly the training and certification. If customers want to increase their use of Elastic Stack, they should consider reducing the cost of certification and training."
"It lacks a clear NDR (Network Detection and Response) feature. If Elastic could enhance this aspect, it would significantly boost its capabilities."
"It'd be really nice if Splunk Enterprise Security had a better and solid configuration guide."
"Cybersecurity and infrastructure monitoring have room for improvement."
"The licensing price is high and has room for improvement."
"We'd like to have the number of devices covered under the license to be increased."
"An improved user interface along with multi-tenancy support would be beneficial."
"An area of improvement would be the licensing of the solution. They need a free license, which would allow faster lead times."
"Splunk could enhance its services by providing more comprehensive professional assistance aimed at optimizing our investment."
"Splunk Enterprise Security can be improved with better triage capability and less dependency on running SPL searches, which would allow analysts who may not have much experience in writing SPL searches to still use the tool and run investigations."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I used the open-source version of Elastic Stack, because of which I did not have to pay anything."
"The pricing is reasonable."
"Ultimately, the pricing depends upon the capacity planning that the enterprise architect does."
"I rate the solution's pricing a six out of ten."
"It depends on the specifics, but generally, Elastic is economical for certain use cases."
"The product is expensive."
"We are using the open-source community version of the product."
"If I compare Elastic Stack to the other products in the market, I would say that the tool is available at a competitive price."
"The variables and the flexibility that Splunk provides are helpful, especially in a hybrid and multi-cloud environment."
"It can be tough to determine if you are getting all of the value out of your investment at times."
"Splunk Enterprise Security is priced lower than competitors."
"I believe that Splunk Enterprise Security is worth the price, but it is expensive."
"Although Splunk is an expensive product, it is designed to be utilized across your organization in order to maximize your ROI and lower your TCO."
"It's more expensive than the other tools, but it's worth it. Every penny is worth it."
"Splunk's cost is very high. They need to review the pricing. They have to go back and totally readdress the market."
"It is a bit costly."
