Automated lineage and business glossaries have improved data understanding and collaboration
I am open to answering a few questions about erwin Data Intelligence and sharing my opinion about the product. Regarding the analytic part of the product, I find it very interesting that erwin Data Intelligence has its own inbuilt reporting toolset, with a new version coming out in January that will be AI-powered. This means you will be able to write analytical reports and questions based on the metadata and data lineage, making it more powerful than the current version, as AI will assist in creating those reports and performing analysis on the metadata. I find that the time taken to realize value from erwin Data Intelligence can be quite long. Creating a data catalog and developing data lineage takes significant time, and I expect that AI will help accelerate the process of creating data products by streamlining the steps involved. I can recommend erwin Data Intelligence to other users. I would rate this review as an eight out of ten overall.

Legacy backup works well with good UI and amazing support
I use it for backup and virtual machines, and the databases are on-premises and in the cloud It's a good solution. It's been in business a long time working with backup. I love it for legacy backup work, I think so. I need more options for virtualization. I know it's good for virtualization, but…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"This type of solution was key to moving our entire company in the right direction by getting everyone to think about data governance."
"Data governance is helping us become even a better company because we know our data and how to use it."
"The solution saves time in data discovery and understanding our entire organization's data."
"I can estimate that we lowered our time to market by 70 percent right now using these automation scripts, which is a really big thing."
"The automated data lineage and impact analysis being driven from the mapping documents are astounding in reducing the time to research impact analysis from six to 16 weeks down to minutes, because it's a couple of clicks with a mouse."
"The main benefits erwin Data Intelligence provides to me include better decision-making, saving money and time by applying governance policies and procedures on the actual technical data, ensuring decisions are based on KPIs that are governed from source to end, and providing functionality for data classification to prevent unauthorized access through integration with the infrastructure team using DLP methodology."
"The biggest impact for us is that erwin generates DDL extremely quickly. We're able to pull in metadata, map it to a target, generate DDL to create the tables, and generate SSIS packages. Previously, especially going back 10 to 15 years ago, hundreds of hours had to be spent to manually perform these tasks. This solution completely automates it and gets it 90% done. We can then pass it off to a developer to create the items in SSIS."
"We always know where our data is, and anybody can look that up, whether they're a business person who doesn't know anything about Informatica, or a developer who knows everything about creating data movement jobs in Informatica, but who does not understand the business terminology or the data that is being used in the tool."
"The most valuable features of Veritas Data Insight are the ease of use, one console deployment for the administration, and backups that can be done in minutes. It is a very fast solution."
"I love Veritas support."
"The solution allowed us to handle GDPR and we made sure we were ready and had storage optimization."
"The most valuable features of Veritas Data Insight are the ease of use, one console deployment for the administration, and backups that can be done in minutes."
"It's a good solution."
"Data Insight is a good product to do everything. It is kind of transparent to administrators. It is also a very good solution with regards to GDPR compliance and regulations. Veritas is a well-established company, and it has a long legacy. Veritas solutions have expected stability and flexibility. It supports most of the flexible solutions in the market and has support for data protection, data monitoring, and things like that. In these ransomware times, it is a very important company with good solutions."
"Veritas Data Insight has been instrumental in managing and categorizing data across our storage repository. The tool identifies valuable business data and distinguishes it from non-essential data. This capability empowers us to separate and exclude unnecessary data from our long-term retention strategy. Its valuable feature is alert mitigation."
"The stability has been great."

Cons

"The integration with various metadata sources, including erwin Data Modeler, isn't smooth in the current version. It took some experimentation to get things working. We hope this is improved in the newer version. The initial version we used felt awkward because Erwin implemented features from other companies into their offering."
"Everything about Data Intelligence is complex. Though we've used the tool for five years, we're still only using about 30 to 40 percent of its capabilities. It would be helpful if we could customize and simplify the user interface because there are so many redundant things."
"We chose to implement on an Oracle Database because we also had the erwin Data Modeler and Web Portal products in-house, which have been set up on Oracle Databases for many years. Sometimes the Oracle Database installation has caused some hiccups that wouldn't necessarily have been caused if we had used SQL Server."
"There was a huge learning curve, and I'd been in software development for most of my career. The application itself, and how it runs menus and screens when you can modify and code, is complex. I have found that kind of cumbersome."
"The SDK behind this entire product needs improvement. The company really should focus more on this because we were finding some inconsistencies on the LDK level. Everything worked fine from the UI perspective, but when we started doing some deep automation scripts going through multiple API calls inside the tool, then only some pieces of it work or it would not return the exact data it was supposed to do."
"The metadata ingestion is very nice because of the ability to automate it. It would be nice to be able to do this ingestion, or set it up, from one place, instead of having to set it up separately for every data asset that is ingested."
"The metadata ingestion is very nice because of the ability to automate it. It would be nice to be able to do this ingestion, or set it up, from one place, instead of having to set it up separately for every data asset that is ingested."
"One big improvement we would like to see would be the workflow integration of codeset mapping with the erwin source to target mapping. That's a bit clunky for us. The two often seem to be in conflict with one another. Codeset mappings that are used within the source to target mappings are difficult to manage because they get locked."
"Its deployment can be a little bit complex. It should be easier to set up. The ease of use of this solution can also be improved, and it could have a cleaner, up-to-date, and intuitive GUI. There are a lot of competitors out there with much nicer GUI and easier setup. It should have a better connection with the cloud sources and much more monitoring. I would like to have a single management interface for on-premises and cloud deployments so that we don't have to switch between them. Its technical support can also be a little bit better."
"I need more options for virtualization."
"The nature of both data processing and start processes often involves varying timeframes for retrieval, mainly dependent on the historical data being accessed. When the request involves pulling information from six months or two years ago, the process may take longer."
"I need more options for virtualization. I know it's good for virtualization, but another product might be easier to work with, like sending to VendCap and Restore."
"The price of Veritas Data Insight could improve, it is expensive."
"Veritas Data Insight can improve the price."
"Veritas Data Insight's reporting capabilities require enhancement."
"The solution is not lacking any features at this time."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"erwin is cheaper than other solutions and this should appeal to other buyers. It has a good price tag."
"You buy a seat license for your portal. We have 100 seats for the portal, then you buy just the development licenses for the people who are going to put the data in."
"Smart Data Connectors have some costs, and then there are user-based licenses. We spend roughly $150,000 per year on the solution. It is a yearly subscription license that basically includes the cost for Smart Data Connectors and user-based licenses. We have around 30 data stewards who maintain definitions, and then we have five IT users who basically maintain the overall solution. It is not a SaaS kind of operation, and there is an infrastructure cost to host this solution, which is our regular AWS hosting cost."
"There is an additional fee for the server maintenance."
"The solution is aggressively priced."
"The price is too high."
"The price is reasonable and competitive. When you get into forward and reverse-engineering, the cost could go up. However, if you are a large organization, you would probably be able to access different packages. If, however, you don't need forward and reverse-engineering, then the price is relatively cheap."
"erwin was at a good price. The federal government wouldn't buy something if the pricing wasn't good."
"The price of Veritas Data Insight could improve, it is expensive."
"For Veritas Data Insight, the usage is based on a per-terabyte model. The annual cost for this usage is approximately one million dollars. It would be roughly 50,000 dollars to provide a more accurate equivalent."
"The solution is cost-effective."
"It is my understanding that the license with one year of support is, per user, around 25 Euros."
"Licensing is based on the number of users or the usage in terabytes."
