Fast, reliable, and rock solid
The solution is intended as the backend for our reporting solution MicroStrategy. It's also used for ad-hoc analysis or to fuel other tools with data as it's the only place where some of the data points are available within an acceptable SLO We used it to decouple ETL and reporting databases. The…

Parallel data processing streamlines operations while cost and cloud integration challenge adoption
The cost of the solution is on the more expensive side, which is a concern for me. Additionally, its promotion and interaction with cloud applications are limited. The cloud version is only available in AWS, and in the Middle East, it is not well-developed in the Azure environment. For the cost to be reduced, it should match competitors. Many features need to be incorporated on the cloud.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Performance is a top priority, and it excels in this aspect."
"This solution is extremely fast and very stable; you set it up and put your data on it and as long as it's structured, it self-tunes queries and doesn't require a database administrator."
"The most valuable feature of Exasol is its speed."
"Its speed is great."
"It is easy to scale."
"The solution is hands-off; you set it up insert your data and it self tunes queries."
"We can quickly scale the solution as it works on an MPP system."
"The speed is very good compared to other databases, like SQL Server or Oracle."
"Data compression. It was relatively impressive; I think at some point we were getting 4:1 compression if not more."
"We had a lot of POC's on a data warehousing project with the help of Netezza, we have proved that it has really improved time on doing analytics."
"The most valuable features of this solution are robustness and support."
"Our BI enviroment with Netezza, Cognos and Data Stage has been a great success"
"The performance of the solution is its most valuable feature; the solution is easy to administer as well, very user-friendly, and on the technical side the architecture is simple to understand and you do not need too many administrators to handle the solution."
"There is minimal on-going maintenance."
"For me, as an end-user, everything that I do on the solution is simple, clear, and understandable."
"Distribution concurrency control."

Cons

"It's not cloud-native so many maintenance operations require downtime."
"There are limited resources available to help me resolve the issue with Exasol."
"Lacks a cloud-based platform."
"The only area where we found it could improve was in custom role creation and security, and it was difficult to work with."
"You have to install Exasol drivers, and it's not easy to find or implement a driver into different systems."
"They should improve the security features for MPP processing."
"They don't talk very well to with other products when it comes to connectivity. Integration is lacking."
"It would be beneficial if the updates would occur more often."
"Our main problem with it is concurrency. When there are too many users running Netezza at the same time, this is when we have the most complaints."
"After being acquired by IBM, support has not been as responsive, but there weren't as many issues as the box was stable."
"We found some bugs - boundary conditions mostly."
"Technical support has been awful. I found them unwilling to help, and with direct VPN connection to systems, unwilling to actually connect and look at information, which is part of our contract."
"I'm not sure of IBM's roadmap currently, as the solution is coming up on its end of life."
"Data lineage on column or even object level does not exist, therefore external applications have to be used"
"Concurrency limit needs to be increased somewhat."
"Disaster recovery support. Because it was an appliance, and if you wanted to support disaster recovery, you needed to buy two."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution's cost is mid-ranged."
"Expensive to maintain compared to other solutions."
"The annual licensing fees are twenty-two percent of the product cost."
"The pricing is very expensive. It has a lot CPUs with a lot of components in it. It also has built-in redundancy for resiliency reasons."
"For me, mainly, it reduces my costs. It's not only the appliance cost. There are also support costs and a maintenance costs. It does reduce the costs very drastically."
"The solution has a yearly licensing fee, and users have to pay extra for support."
"Netezza is a costly solution. It does serve a specific purpose but it's costlier than what's available in the market, if you go to the cloud."
