FreePBX can be improved as they come out with a new version every year or so. Their current version is FreePBX 17. The user community and the FAQ are great; you can search for just about anything you want to do on FreePBX and they're getting new AI engines and new text to speech engines from third party vendors all the time. So it's a very rich community. Sometimes the security is a bit odd with FreePBX, but security is a bit odd overall, so I don't know if that's a valid concern. I appreciate it; it's a good environment. Sangoma is the owner of the system. If I ever get stuck on something, and it doesn't happen very often, I can call and get help from Sangoma, and sometimes they want me to pay for it. It's fine if that's what it takes, but there's great support.

Automation has transformed complex workflows and has empowered non‑technical teams to build flows
Regarding improvements for n8n, I would highlight two areas. First, while there is a growing community, the ecosystem of pre-built nodes for niche or proprietary systems still lags behind some commercial competitors. I often have to build custom HTTP request nodes or create my own node packages, which is doable but adds to project timelines. Second, features for team collaboration and lifecycle management are still evolving. Moving workflows from development to staging to production can be a manual export-import process, and native Git integration and more robust user roles for larger client teams would be a game-changer. Regarding needed improvements, I believe much of the existing documentation is not peer-reviewed. There is definitely a big community, but if the documentation or tutorials were approved or at least had a badge from n8n, customers would feel that this meets the standards of n8n editors themselves, which would give more confidence in the flows.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is the most user-friendly, flexible and resilient system for voice-over IP we have installed so far."
"FreePBX offers the best features for a small call center for a small company with 20 or 30 agents."
"The call routing features with FreePBX have enhanced our customer service, with several sites all connected to a single central deployment, allowing people to work remotely from different locations using the same system."
"Since it is a free solution, all the features FreePBX offers are valuable."
"My advice for others looking into using FreePBX is that it is reasonable and most of the features are free, so I recommend it."
"I have seen a return on investment with FreePBX; for example, the musical instruments group saved over $30,000 a year by moving from Cisco to FreePBX for their licensing."
"FreePBX has positively impacted my organization, and if I were to compare it to Elastix, I find it a lot easier to manage since it does not have a lot of bugs and is very user-friendly."
"FreePBX positively impacts my organization because it would not be able to work properly without it, as a lot of server configurations are built on it and we fully rely on this system."
"Our business is growing faster because we have created workflows that help us improve our business."
"n8n is very useful because it has saved a lot of people a lot of code and has brought us to a point of little or no-code development that has helped create a way that we are not fully dependent on those writing the code and trying to glue integrations together."
"The solution is absolutely efficient in terms of usage and is user-friendly."
"The capability of n8n to connect different applications and automate tasks while supporting over 200 pre-built integrations is pretty effective."
"n8n is pretty flexible when it comes to pricing, setup cost, and licensing when compared to other platforms such as Make and Zapier."
"My recommendation is to start with n8n if you have any need for automation or integration, especially if you value control, cost predictability, and technical transparency."
"The user-friendly interface positively impacted the team's workflow efficiency."
"For lead generation, I gave all the contacts to n8n and made it write the email and automated the email sending workflow for lead generation, and the conversion rate was around 70%."

Cons

"There are some limitation issues with concurrent calls; when we have concurrent calls, sometimes the entire PBX fails."
"Security would be the main feature that I wish was better because the FreePBX box can get hacked quickly."
"I believe FreePBX could be improved regarding the user interface. Sometimes the user interface has bugs, and when you apply configuration changes, they do not always apply properly."
"However, when the call volume is large, sometimes FreePBX goes on halt, and because of that reason, I give it seven out of ten."
"Sometimes the security is a bit odd with FreePBX, but security is a bit odd overall, so I don't know if that's a valid concern."
"Sometimes when I receive reports that a user is not able to make a call out or they are having a call drop issue, viewing the dashboard provides no data."
"I think FreePBX can be improved by offering users the ability to design a call flow more easily through a drag and drop interface."
"One area where they can continue to focus their improvements is support for third-party phones on the endpoint manager module."
"The setup of n8n is sometimes very complicated, especially with the HTTP node, which is complex to set up."
"Because of that constraint, I used the way n8n itself flows and works to create an autonomous system that I designed for the marketing domain, making sure that the guardrails are executing at the commit boundary."
"However, I feel that for very complex production environments, it still requires considerable fine-tuning and knowledge, and sometimes it might not be fully ready to support large-scale implementations in production."
"I have set up n8n on our local server, which is on a Contabo-based server, and sometimes it was losing connection."
"I feel that n8n is more coding-oriented, as it presents everything in a JSON format. n8n needs to update some features and ensure that everything is user-friendly."
"They haven't fully helped tailor solutions for our needs."
"Currently, most products nowadays include walkthrough or guide videos, short videos of 20 to 30 seconds that inform about any particular button or action, which n8n product does not have."
"The localized implementation is a bit complex and we definitely need some developers involved within this process."
